I am not saying you would want to hook your PDA to your laptop/desktop. Your game system connects wirelessly through your router as oppose to the alternative.

Network != PDA
Wireless is not perfect, but it is up and coming and coming fast at that.
As far as security goes, Wi-Fi got a bad rap when tons of networks were set up with little to no security over the past few years. There are tons of free downloads to help increase security on your wireless network.
I will give you the fact that wireless networks only use 40 bit encryption, but when AES emerges in the next year or so, security on WEP's will be greatly enhanced.
I am not against wired networks, but in this field you have to keep up with technology.
