Rotterdam's Speedy J has had a production career with more twists and
turns than an electric eel. From providing the beats and scratches for
a local hip hop outfit in the late '80s (where the name 'Speedy J'
stuck) to becoming a member of techno's hierarchy through gilt-edged
dancefloor releases on Richie Hawtin's and John Acquaviva's Plus 8 and
Warp to ripping the rule book to pieces via his jigsaw sound puzzles on
Novamute and subsequently returning to the floor once more for 2002's
'Loudboxer' opus and current 'Collabs' (2004) 12" co-productions, he
has steadfastly furrowed his own path of sonic exploration. Currently,
Mr. J returned to the more club-friendly rhythmic patterns of techno
producing work that could more comfortably sit within a DJ set (well,
as comfortable as a blistering Speedy J techno track can be!) From his
superlative remix work to his current 'Collabs' series of dancefloor EP
co-productions with the likes of Adam Beyer, Literon (Gert-Jan Bijl)
and Chris Liebing, Speedy J refuses to stay still. With a long history
of live performance through his days playing the Megadog tours,
European festivals and the international club circuit it is somewhat
ironic that for a man who gained his name for his lightening prowess
behind the decks, as a techno artist Speedy J only plays live. But what
a live set. Blistering towers of industrial noise, alien frequencies
strafing the airwaves and a twisted funk all of its own. Little wonder
he's Rotterdam's most requested sound export.
