while writing one's name on property doesn't guarantee that it will keep it from getting stolen or lost, it at least gives people a chance to know to whom the objects belong, and, if they know their owner, whether or not they return them becomes up to their conscience . (it also looks tacky to have in one's possession objects w/ other people's names on them !)
