After BMG graciously (sic) removed Way out West from their roster in December 2000 due to disappointing returns from the "The Fall" (samples the chill-out classic "Autumn Leaves" by Coldcut) single released earlier that year, Distinctive Records offered WOW a three-album contract. WAY OUT WEST

Way out West, a world-reknowned progressive house act & remix act, was conceived in the bowels of Bristol UK in early 1993. DJ and producer Jody Wisternoff had just been introduced to Nick Warren, and after a few hours in the studio together, they realized they had a common musical vision. Jody's first collaboration with Nick was on a track called "Paradise is the Sound" which he and a friend had been working on. The next two releases were under the name "Echo" and the most popular versions were titled 'Way Out West Mix.' Originally intended as a remix project, the duo took a liking to the name and adopted it for the main act.
James Barton (A&R for Deconstruction in 1994) was suitably impressed with independent releases such as "Shoot" and "Montana" and signed them to Deconstruction - the only label Nick and Jody wished to join. "Ajare," a tune that hinted at what was to come with pop hooks, bizarre samples, meticulate synth stabs, & epic hindu swirlings, reached number 62 in the U.K. singles chart. The harder, trancier "Domination" followed before "The Gift" charted at number 15 and established Way Out West as one of the foremost house acts in the U.K. "Blue," a melodic trip hop groove, was released with a menacing club mix in 1997.

At 26 years old, Jody Wisternoff of Way Out West is something of a seasoned veteran. With an impressive career that spans 11 years to date, Jody has achieved commerical success and critical acclaim as a producer, remixer and DJ. In the late '80s, legendary Bristol duo Smith and Mighty opened up their studio to two very young kids who went by the name of Tru Funk Posse (comprised of Jody and his younger brother Sam). These two self-taught, pre-pubescent hip hoppers had already produced a hefty handful of tracks utilizing one of the first-ever computer based drum machines which ran on the ZX Spectrum, the classic rubber-keyed computer which is best remembered for games such as "Jet Set Willie" and "Attic Attack." With a modified belt-driven record deck, the older member of T.F.P. (not yet a teenager) learned to imitate the hip hop DJs of the time who were still inventing and mastering the art for themselves.

Under Smith and Mighty's Three Stripe Label, the two youngsters released a well-received single as well as accepted gigs anywhere the bouncers would let them through the door. They even broke through to the finals in one of the first-ever DMC championships while receiving national notoriety from mags such as The Face, Hip Hop Connection and I.D. Who was responsible for the musical side of the operation? None other than a pre-teen Jody Wisternoff who, as well as filling the world's most illustrious dan JODY (WAY OUT WEST)

"Ajare," a tune that hinted at what was to come with pop h.C., Miami's Space and Hyperia in Houston. "Ajare" was also rereleased with an impressive new remix from the boys themselves and Brothers in Rhythm (aka Dave Seaman).
Way Out West's first eponymous album was released in 1997 to huge critical acclaim. With this album, Way out West tiptoed effortlessly into the gap between the mainstream and raveland and produced one of the finest British house albums yet released. Tracks such as "King of the Funk" and "Sequoia" seemed to provide the perfect summer soundtrack. The single "Blue" was seen on T.V. with its bizarre video featuring cult actor Harry Dean Stanton. Nick and Jody set off on tour and played high-powered live shows all over Europe (including Glastonbury Festival, Amsterdam (MTV party) and MIDEM in France).
After BMG graciously (sic) removed Way out West from their roster in December 2000 due to disappointing returns from the "The Fall" (samples the chill-out classic "Autumn Leaves" by Coldcut) single released earlier that year, Distinctive Records offered WOW a three-album contract. The album Intensify, a masterwork of swirling atmospherics, big trancy beats and a musical ooks, bizarre samples, meticulate synth stabs, & epic hindu swirlings, reached number 62 in the U.K. singles chart. The album Intensify, a masterwork of swirling atmospherics, big trancy beats and a musical sensibility previously unprecedented within the genre, found a new home and was set for release in the UK on August 13th with the single of the same name (featuring the vocal talents of Aly Kennen) to be released the preceding week. The album appeared in the Dotmusic top 100 charts for that week, so it had obviously turned some heads. The album was released in North America by Nettwerk the following month. The next single, "Mindcircus," featuring the vocals of Tricia Lee Kelshall, was released to a great fanfare in March of 2002 and managed to hit #39 in the UK singles charts and #1 in the UK dance charts. It's success continued by reaching #15 in the U.S. dance charts. The loungecore "Stealth," possibly the finest moment on Intensify and featuring the angelic vocals of Kirsty Hawkshaw, is set to be the final single from the album, released on September 2nd.
Over this course of time, Way out West have been taking their live act across the world, from Asia to Brazil, USA to Australia and back again. The live act features the vocal talents of Tricia Lee Kelshall and occasional appearances by Aly Kennen, special live versions of the album tracks as well as unreleased tunes, live sample manipulation, an invigorating light show tailored to the music and more. As excitement for progressive house builds in America and continues to develop and mutate in the UK and worldwide, look for Way out West at the forefront.
