(taken from

For the uninitiated, Burning Man in an annual outdoor festival held in the heart of the United States in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. The now-infamous event, which has been held in the desert since 1990 draws over 25,000 people for a week long party featuring performers of all varieties and art installations, that culminates with the quasi-ritualistic torching of a three story straw man.
Although there will be no flaming scarecrows at the NYC event, its organisers hope to create a diverse, burning man-style atmosphere aimed to please those that wish they could dwell in the heart of the Black Rock Desert all year round. Today (Sunday 5th December) the Astral Slide event organisers will take over NYC's Spirit nightclub from 2pm until 5 am, creating a burning man in the heart of the big apple.
DJ's will take over three areas of Spirit's three floors, with the top floor dedicated to live bands and performers. In keeping with Burning Man's laidback, west coast vibe, the event will also feature yoga and Pilates instruction, as well as Qui Gong sessions and a massage class. Tickets for the event range from $10 to $30, but are $20 at the door for those in costume. (12/05/04)
