i mean , the whole purpose of having a laptop is to be mobile isnt it? ![]() i think buying a wireless router is better because u have the option of going both wireless/wired...leave your laptops wireless and the dekstops wired... in terms of speed, i guess it all depends on what u'r using your internet connection for...just for regular browsing purposes, the avg user will not be able to tell the diff between a wired and a wireless connection (if u have cable i.e.)...and u always have the option of "plugging in" your computer when trying to download/upload large amount of data... stability - yeah - the wireless "can" def be a bitch - but once set up - u'll hardly have any problems... i'd say first try setting it up - if its too much of a pain in the ass (constant IP conflict errors etc) - just go wired - but atleast try it out... security - well...again - it really depends on what u'r using ur conncection for...if u really want ur internet to be secure - there's lots of ways of doing this even using wireless...(not using a windows OS could be a start...)...if u cant secure the wireless connection urself - have a techy friend help out - its not that hard... so if u own a laptop - atleast give the wirelss a shot - if everything works out fine - i doubt u'll ever go back to the prehistoric days of wired networks... |

If you read what I wrote: Quote:
Wireless is not perfect, but it is up and coming and coming fast at that. As far as security goes, Wi-Fi got a bad rap when tons of networks were set up with little to no security over the past few years. There are tons of free downloads to help increase security on your wireless network. I will give you the fact that wireless networks only use 40 bit encryption, but when AES emerges in the next year or so, security on WEP's will be greatly enhanced. I am not against wired networks, but in this field you have to keep up with technology.

Linux is a lot more secure then Windows...most large corporations have their networks set up in a linux enviroment. The security is a lot better. I am toying with Linux now. The IP errors can be a bitch, but , as you said, once you work out the kinks you are good to go. The time you spend running wires, drilling holes etc, can be equal to the time you spend configuring IPs.

![]() If you really don't need wireless, don't do it. It's much cheaper and will give you less problems to hook up a 4-port router. Check ebay. I have this one and it works great: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=44989 Also if the PCs she's hooking up do not have NIC cards, you'll need them too. Get the CAT-5 cables off ebay also. If you get them from the same person, you'll save on shipping. A 50 ft cable goes for $39.99 at CompUSA and for $12.00 on eBay with shipping. Good luck

I am all about eBay but in certain instances you get what you pay for. I really don't understand why you would want to connect a laptop to a wired network when you have a portable solution. Laptops are for portability.
