| similarities
I can see the similarities in that both cultures tried to distance themselves from "the establishment" and experimented with drugs. But, the hippies seemed a lot more politically active, probably because of the time they lived in. Anti-Vietnam protests (Kent State), women's movement, civil rights marches...all really charged the air with a sense of revolution. Not the military kind, but the cultural kind and for a while it seemed like they could succeed with Woodstock occurring, the San Francisco free-love, acid rock scene and so forth. But, the economic reality of the 70's, the onslaught of STDs, and the abundance of harder drugs seemed to dampen the "hippie spirit". As for the the modern generations, do we really have a cause to stand behind? I been reading the posts on this board for a few weeks and nobody even mentions PLUR, except when it's to take a jab at it. Everyone seems to rally behind the music and "the scene", but where is that taking us? The hippies of the 60's seemed to have their shit together (read The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test for a good reference). Maybe the impending war that is coming our way will change all this. Who knows? Now back to happy thoughts and lunch. |

similarities are there, for sure. the idea of love and unity and transcendance through music and drugs, individualism through clothes and art. taking you "higher" - hell its even lyrics to songs. yeah its there. ibiza is more like mecca for me - a pilgrimage type place. and don't forget the media aspect of things - both hippies and ravers are villified without newscasters ever really taking the bother to understand what's going on beneath the surface. the hippies were forged out of a tumultuous time involving war and the pressures to conform to a society. we were forged out of the pressures to conform to a materialistic society where money and security is placed above all else. their cause was explicit - vietnam, civil rights. ours is much more invisible - a constrictive society controlled by corporate machine, unafraid to tarnish anything beautiful to sell more widgets. that being said, i think that club and rave culture is far more commercial then the hippie culture. i sincerely doubt that they had ATM's at woodstock, nor were the streets littered with smirnoff ads. ford focus did not sponsor your love-in, and instead of giving away the sunshine acid we now get free KMX energy drink. "indiviualists" are no longer people going against the grain - they are target markets. sure there are plenty of psy-trance parties under the bridge - but the average mentality is why go there when you can go to centro-fly? there is a good chance that vinyl won't get shut down that night, or that the scaffolding won't collapse on you at sensation amsterdam. so the similarities are there.... but we are not hippies. and there are those who would say "why should we be?" rob |

oh yeah one more thing about the diff b/w hippies and ravers - it seemed like hippies were interested in changing the world to be like their vision. ravers are only interested in having a pocket outside of the mainstream where they can be themselves. i like the raver mentality better in that respect. it seems like being a hippie was a full-time occupation - you existed in a separate world from the straight folks. ravers and clubbers can be weekend warriors, working within the system until friday and saturday hits and then you just escape into that world.... (i can't wait to go out now) rob |

i can see some resemblence and all of the points everyone brought up are all true and valid......i think we express ourselves in a different way and just like back then people around dont understand what we are all about........but now with the up and coming war(hopefully it dont reach that) we are gonna be more and more similar for those who are against war....there have already been anti-war protests in washington
