Some new quotas might soon be in effect. Not the usual quotas: one girl for every one guy. But rather one bouncer for every 75 clubbers. Yesterday, in the latest chapter of nightlife legal drama, the New York City Council introduced a bill that would require clubs to hire 1 bouncer for every 75 expected patrons. The first concrete action from the recent "Nightlife Summit," the bill was proposed by Councilman Peter Vallone. The Councilman said, "We learned that there was no minimum requirement for the number of bouncers. This is the first step to regulate that.” At first blush, to an outsider, this sounds all peachy. "Security good! Bouncers good! Underage drinking bad! Fire bad!" But is the problem really a lack of bouncers? Just waltz down 28th street by crobar, for instance. There's practically 75 bouncers for every 1 clubber. Furthermore, club-owners aren't stupid. They already know they need to hire enough security to control the crowd. If they needed more beef, they would hire more beef. Their business depends on it. The owner of Sutra, Ariel Palitz, said to the Washington Square News, "I would hate for the law to make them have more than they would actually need. If you have 200 people and are forced to hire four to five security, then it’s overkill. What we need is help outside. Ultimately, it’s where all the complaints come from and irritation is caused."
