I lived in Seoul for two years, from 2001 to 2003. For house music, you'll want to go to the Hongdae area. There are a lot of little clubs that play house and techno. Don't expect anything too crazy, though, since Koreans are somewhat conservative and dance music is still really new for them. But things are definitely improving...when I first arrived there were only a small handful of clubs that played anything dancelike, and now they're starting to develop a nice little scene. You won't find a lot of drugs, however, as even smoking pot is scandalous to Koreans, let alone taking pills or anything else. Big name DJs do come to town every few weeks or so...I saw Paul van Dyk, Bad Boy Bill, Christopher Lawrence, Dimitri from Paris, Laurent Garnier. It's nothing like seeing these DJs here in NY, but it is still kind of nice, since I saw Paul van Dyk in the ballroom of the Hyatt with plenty of room to dance! Don't go to Itaewon to party unless you're only out to hook up. Other that that, there are some fun little gay clubs there....a club called G was one of our favorites since it was in the neighborhood. Anyway, hope that helps! hey...that's great that you're doing asia, you should have a fabulous time....anyway, i'm replying to you 'cuz I spent the last two years living in Seoul, South Korea....as for Seoul, don't really recommend it (although they do manage to pull some decent dj's [i.e Paul van Dyk, System F, Fat Boy Slim, etc.] and the great thing about those parties is that not many people in Seoul are into that kind of music, so basically you get a really intimate party with PvD....not like in NYC, lol!!). I have been to Thailand, however, and didn't find Bangkok to be much of a clubbing city (everything closes at 2am)...but I did have a great time on Koh Samui...my advice would be to skip the Full Moon Party (way too crowded and too many undercover cops) and try to hit up the Half Moon Party, Black Moon Party, etc, which I think are all on Koh Samui...way cooler and a lot less people but still great music and atmosphere. Yep, yep, CT is boring but there's fun to be had if you want it bad enough. Now, though, I only to go to BAR, or into NY. Whoever said Risk sucks is right...I went there once and wasn't that impressed. I've had some entertaining evenings in New Haven....one friend even managed to drag me to Gotham Citi, Van Dome and "CT's Hottest Sat. Night Dance Party" at Toad's (although, that was the first and last time I've ever been to any of those places)...I have to say, though, that it was pretty entertaining watching the 15-year-old girls parading around in sparkly tube tops and and black pleather pants, while overweight frat boys and greasy guidos tried to get it on with them. Oh, and the "CT's hottest thong" contest at Toad's was pretty amusing too...

Yep, July 14 is Bastille Day. It's pretty fun, the whole city is just hanging out and the Parisian firemen host dances at pretty much every fire station in Paris that night (great for girls, prob. not so much for guys As for clubbing, it's OK but not spectacular. The Love Parade, on the other hand, sounds amazing (I'm dying to go). Have fun.

Classical and those "crooners" from the 1930s and 40s (Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier, etc)...they had some great style back then.

Very true, Daniela,....the idea of having a point to life is very comforting and I'm not educated enough to say whether this belief exists in all cultures.....I'd be curious to find out though.....Damn it, you made me think philosophically on a Fri night (J/K, it's kinda fun).....and by the way, I go to school in New London, CT, I'm a senior and I'm counting down the days until graduation!!

OK, since I'm here at school and school sucks and I'm blasted right now....here's my reply. Since history goes in cycles (I'm a history major, I like this stuff), the ultimate purpose of humankind is to once again regain the lost paradise of Adam and Eve (if you believe in that stuff). And the way to fulfill this is by being kind and honest to each other. Once everyone is pure and honest to each other, only then will we all live in peace together. This will probably never happen....but it's all theoretical anyway.....and other cultures believe in ideas like this too. What about the escape from samsara (time), for example, in Hinduism, stating that you must first fulfill your role on earth and then you can finally escape the chains of human time once and for all.....whatever, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about right now. If other people think CT sucks let me hear it!!

Gotham Citi has afterhours Sat. nights...I think it might be the only afterhours in New Haven. A few new places (Risk, Alchemy) opened recently, I think they close at 2 but you might want to call and double check. Hope that helps.

I hear you guys. It seems like these tests and papers are neverending....but just think, in a few days it'll all be good. Until then it just seems like hell on earth. OK, gotta go do more work although my problem is that I'm so hopped up on those damn caffeine pills right now that I can barely sit still long enough to type this reply, let alone a 12-page paper.....
