Corrugated Tunnel is the brainchild of Edwin James on of the key players in Ireland's burgeoining electro scene and, on the evidence of this versatile debut, a man with enormous production potential. ' We Are Electronix' pinballs its way around genres for fun, taking elements of acid, electro, house and techno to create a unique sound that, if you had to nail it down, probably sits in the corner marked 'Intelligent-Techno-Meets-Acidy-Electronia'

What ever the definition, this is quality stuff - from the straight-up electro of 'Rockstars' to the old-school squelch of 'The Bionic Hustle' and moddy, vocoder-led electronica of 'Not Coming Back'. And even if 'The Snare's' crashing drumbeats come as a bit of a cold-shower shock, what's probably going to make you love Corrugated Tunnel more than anything are the string-soaked atmospherics of tracks like 'Chain Smoking monkey' and '303 on 31st and Fifth'- stonewall future classics which merit comparison to Orbital's most emotional output and hint a greatness all of their own.

Edwin James is electronic in sound but punk by nature. He set up his own label as a platform for his work and has brought his mixture of electro and techno to every bar, club and live venue in the country. Despite his DiY attitude, one gets the feeling that 'Electronix' is merely a warm up for the main event. James's production is pristine throughout and he certainly has an ear for melody, but 'Electronix' displays too much reverence for the past. Once he steps out from the shadows of those he eulogises, we can expect to hear a masterpiece.

Edwin James has been a prolific player on the local electronica scene for quite a few years, yet, as seems to be the case with many Irish producers, it's taken until now for his debut album to emerge. What's clear, however, is just how useful his many compilation appearances and, particularly, live appearances have been in terms of developing and fine-tuning a particular approach to sound. Be it the pristine electronics that make up the groove on the shimmering Not Coming Back or the jumpy bleeps on Pink Is the New Black, James has the confidence to wait for his own particular sonic map to unfold from the creases. He also has an eye for the wry electro-indie crossover, as Rock Stars shows. Occasionally, James veers too near the Kraftwerk autobahn for his own safety (especially on 303 on 31 and Fifth), but he possesses enough ideas and notions of his own to prevent that happening too often. www.weareelectronix.com
