VH1 is airing a news special tonight-Hooked on club drugs......

With teen Ecstasy (MDMA) use doubled since 1998, Drug Enforcement Agency chief Asa Hutchinson recently called club drugs the most pressing narcotics issue for urban youth. As MDMA moves from the rave scene to the mainstream, the government is expanding a new front on the war on drugs. In the spring the DEA enlisted women legislators around the country in a campaign to hold party promoters responsible for ecstasy use on their premises. And a bill close to passage in the U.S. senate would expand the ‘crack house’statutes of the 1980’s, making rave promoters and club owners more culpable for illicit drug use at their venues. Electronic music promoters call it an unfair attack on a entire subculture while one raver calls it “musical genocide.”

VH1 goes inside clubland through the eyes of Jesse Faunt, a warehouse raver who casually snorts ketamine, swallows ecstasy (MDMA), and smokes cigarettes dipped in PCP, all in an effort to connect with the music, his friends and his artwork. But Jesse’s habits have consequences for his relationships and his future, which are documented as he heads for state-enforced rehab in Pennsylvania. The one-hour documentary also profiles an undercover detective battling club drugs in Miami; the family of a high school senior from Orange County California who decided with fatal results, to ‘roll one last time’ at her prom; and a professional 20-something from central Florida who deems herself a “responsible” recreational ecstasy user. The news special examines the true risks associated with MDMA and puts the club drug epidemic in perspective with boomer experimentation in the 1960s. It also looks at why the government’s war on designer drugs and multi-million dollar education campaigns seem to fail. Have alarmist anti drug campaigns-from reefer madness all the way to ‘drug/terrorism’ connection-eroded the government credibility?
