British police said Friday they are investigating the death of a British man who was fatally shot by Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip.
London's Metropolitan Police said it was conducting inquiries on behalf of a coroner into the death of Tom Hurndall, a 22-year-old university student who was shot in April. He died Tuesday after nine months in a vegetative state.

Westminster Coroner Paul Knapman will conduct an inquest, which likely would begin later this month, his office said Friday.

Hurndall was shot in the Rafah refugee camp while with the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group whose activists volunteer to serve as buffers between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians. His family have said they hope an Israeli soldier accused of shooting Hurndall will be charged with murder.

The Israeli Embassy in London promised last week that the government would "ensure that justice is served" in the case. A statement from the embassy said that Jerusalem viewed the shooting with "the utmost s*****ty" and was "acting to ensure that justice is served."

The IDF arrested a soldier late last year over the shooting of Hurndall and charged him Monday with grievous bodily harm. Security sources said that with the activist's death, the charges were likely to be upgraded to manslaughter.

"After a full and independent investigation, charges have been brought against an IDF soldier in connection with the shooting of Mr. Hurndall, and a trial will take place," the Israeli Embassy statement said.
