solid his entire career, always found the endzone , too bad he couldnt let it go 2 yrs ago, as his legacyhas been tainted a little not retiiring a Cowgirl and 2 less than dazzling seasons in the desert

    PS
i would like to have seen what Barry Sanders would have done with the o-line emmit had

that looks like the louisville cardinal logo doesnt it?

yeah- i hated the cowboys in the mid 90's, but emmit was as great of a running back that i have ever seen.

all around, I never witnessed one better so far (although I really never paid attention to Walter Payton's play).

i only saw walter payton towards the end of his career, pretty much from 79 to 85 the bears sucked so i never paid attention to them. the only one that i would put up there with emmit-and maybe over emmit- in my lifetime is barry sanders. what he did playing for a usually shitty team, w/ no decent o-line was impressive.

Barry was definately the better runner, but he wasnt as good a receiver out of the backfield or as good a blocker as Emmitt.

There will never be one clear cut "better player" because it is all subjective

subjective ? yeh i guess you right but to me, IMO its clear cut to me, Hands down Barry Sanders is a better running back than emmit

he left at the top of his game and would have obliterated the yardage put up by Emmit ....touchdowns obviously no comparison but thats directly related to the teams played on
Compare the teams they were on not even close the Cowboys of the 90s vs the LIons of the 90s
Barry had NO o-line vs one of the best ever in Dallas , NO QB or any passing game to speak of in Detroit, allowing defenses to key on Barry. Allstars everywhere in Dallas ..Irvin/ Aikman

blocking abilities?? Daryl Johnston did all the blocking in that backfield
recieving abilities?? ...not too concerned , Emmit had more receptions but TD are the same

true Emmitt had a much better team so he had a lot more weapons...I dunno, thats why its all subjective because it depends on how you look at it. Its kind of like comparing Jim Brown to Barry or Emmitt or Walter....you cant make a fair comparison.

btw....Emmitt was always an awesome blocker. He wasnt a run blocker (of course) but he was always in on third downs because he could make the play in the flats but mainly because of his ability to pick up the blitz. Trust me on this, I listened to announcers ride his dick for years and years about this.

Actually for a couple of years the Lions had on of the most explosive offenses in football. Between Barry, Herman Moore, Johnny Morton, & I forgot the other receiver (maybe lola could help me here) they could put up points with anybody.

I always thought Barry was the better player. Thats not so say Emmitt wasn't great himself. They were 2 different type of runners so comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges. What clinches it for me like others have said is that if you stuck Barry on the Cowboys his numbers would be even greater than they are. I think Emmitt's numbers would have suffered in Detroit... A couple of years ago they asked this question to NFL players... They overwhelmingly felt that Barry was better as well...
