  1. Got out of bed and slogged through the rain Friday night to check out Compression, the electro/ tech monthly at KingKing... wow, was it worth it! Arrived a little after 11pm, and the crowd was around 2/3 capacity and filling up quick, ordered up my Maker's Mark Manhattan (drunk test- if I can't order it I shouldn't be drinking it lol...) A good stiff drink, and well-priced at seven bucks- nice! John Tejada hit the decks around 1130 with his knife-edge beats tempered by rolling synths, he writes, produces, and remixes as well, very talented guy and incredibly down to earth, talked with him a few times and he is refreshingly unpretentious... JT kept the crowd happy as he scaled the tempo up and handed off a happy crowd to... Daniel Bell. Daniel Bell, well I've never seen him before but I had high hopes: Damn if he didn't exceed them! This guy is old-school, put in some fifteen years at the tables, came out of the Detroit techno scene with Carl Cox and more importantly (to my tastes) Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman. His signature style is a sort of minimal techno, these dark, warm, rolling beats that almost subconsciously lift you up into this (cliche) euphoric feeling, not particularly housey or trancey, just clean builds and swells made up of drums and synths and blips; I know it sounds somewhat sterile but if you pick up Richie Hawtin's new Transitions CD, you'll know what I mean... Wow, sooo gooood! I had a long day, almost didn't make it to the club, and there I was UNABLE to sit down, bringing back the reason I got into dance music. People dancing, moving, eyes close, lost in the music... Having been so consistently disappointed recently, it was a welcome reminder of the power of a good DJ to unite us all. Only gripe: Compression went till 4am, and by three-ish there were only a dozen or two people around, and by 330 it was three of us on the dance floor. Ugh. People are just programmed to feel tired around 130am, I guess. Sheep. Thanks John and Daniel for a great night!
  2. been a few times, just a couple of blocks away. Always a good crowd, more new york than l.a. (if a little bridge & tunnel) good sound, and the vibe is nice. My only complaint would be (as almost anywhere) it gets a bit too crowded to dance sometimes. recommended.
  3. Your argument appears to be cogent, factual and well-reasoned. This belies that your stipulations are red herrings. It can be argued that ALL human beings generally seek to improve their standing in life with respect to social and familial rewards. This drives ambition and the resulting "contributions" to the US by the so-called grey market, quantifiable in economic and labor terms. I disagree, however, because although you couch your argument with stats and political opinion, it is basically an emotional appeal. And by the way, this country was not built on illegal immigration, boatloads were turned away who did not go through proper registration. (Ever heard of Ellis Island...?) That is, boatloads not containing a cargo of slaves. But that's another argument... You claim that fact should be separated from fiction? Fact: Illegal immigrants are in this country illegally. As in breaking the law. The penalty is that they are asked to leave the country and go through the immigration process LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. It is not racism. It took my friend's wife SIX YEARS to become a legal citizen. And she is a white Canadian. I have friends from England, Australia, Singapore and Finland all wishing to enter the US and work here. To be born within scampering distance of our border does not entitle someone immigration status above someone else born outside of the US. It is a safeguard and protection afforded to citizens by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Logical, rational, factual? Illegal. Simple as that. P.S. Please don't take this as a personal attack. I am thrilled that this forum is a place for debate beyond who has the worse bouncers and which white label mix is best... : )
  4. Returning weary to this board after a long sojourn... so nice to be greeted by the lovele Weyes and her inimitable wisdoms!
  5. hiya Weyes, back in town but gone next weekend so I'll miss Spacegirl, pity... Tomorrow night definitely gonna be at Deep for Miguel Migs, though, hasn't let me down yet.
  6. All these places are about the music, so just dress to make it plain, no posing there. Wax, being on Sat night is a bit dressier than the other two, but still no code. That being said, they'd probably frown upon you showing up looking like one of the Wayan brothers in "Don't be a menace..."
  7. Wax on Saturdays and of course, the best in my opinion, Marques Wyatt @ Deep on Sunday nights @ 1650. I'm there every week I'm not lying around with an I.V. needle cause of what I did the night before... Also, Root Down thursdays, though that blends some hip-hop/ funk as well...
  8. I like Bar Dynamite, good hous/ hip hop and decent crowd though not a club... On Broadway has that cool VIP room they opened recently really chill, and Candelas on third? has a great bar scene as well, a bit off the beaten path but not as San Diego-ish if you know what I mean...
  9. Here's one that I'm just a huuuge fan of: You're getting on the freeway and and have the good fortune of following someone on the on-ramp who speeds up to a blinding thirty-five miles per hour when merging, leaving I]your ass to be the one hit by the guy going seventy in the slow lane passing on the right and flashing his lights at the guy going fifty in the fast lane... sound familiar?
  10. I went with my girlfriend, we hadn't been out dancing in awhile, and I guess we're pretty spoiled. The selection of tunes was pretty inconsistent; I agree that it started well, they opened up with some banging tracks that got everybody up, but then it fell into this somewhat repetitive groove, beats, pads, vocal, breakdown, beats, then beats, pads, no vocal, breakdown, etc, ad naseum...yawn. The ear-splitting volume and the fact that everyone smoked EVERWHERE, even on the dance floor also left a bit to be desired. And then there's the crowd; this was the spoiled part I mentioned: I'm used to going to Deep, and Honey, Red, Root Down, places where it is about THE MUSIC. Everyone's in their own world, everyone's dancing and just doing their own thing, feeling it. So, coming from those experiences to one where you're grooving to that one good song out of every three they spin and then you get elbowed by six guys who walk past you and then just stand there in the middle of the dance foor look around for a song or two, then walk off to be replaced by another group, I mean, what the f*%k is that about? Well, it was fifteen bucks, not thirty, so all in all we tried to keep it positive and did have a good time... just coulda been, well, better. Much better. In my own humble opinion, of course;)
  11. Weyes, didn't see you there, whaddya think? I gotta say, somewhat disappointing... Last NYE they were amazing, last night, less. Anyone else??
  12. Just got tix for Deep Dish, last time I saw them was NYE '02 on Hollywood Blvd, amazing!! Can't wait til Fri...
  13. Wow, actually I didn't get there till about 1am, and I only waited maybe ten minutes; all the kiddies getting home before curfew I guess. Once inside, not bad, decent vibe, not as candykid as I thought it would be, the main room was top40 trance but then we found the progressive/ nu-nrg room and it was goin' off... Shoulda come back, lalate, too bad..where'd ya end up?
  14. Just saw this and thinking about checking it out... Does anyone know anything about this? http://www.freedomforcefive.com/ff2003_info.html
  15. I'm actually thinking about it, cause I've been OD'ing on house lately, but forty bucks and none of my friends are into it, so we'll see.... By the way, like the b-day picks, Weyes!
