With Cubik, Nation Is Buzzing Again

LAST SEPTEMBER, Washington scenesters found their calendars a little emptier on Friday nights. Buzz, the long-running weekly party at Nation, closed under pressure from local and national authorities concerned about possible drug use at the event. Mourning club kids held a makeshift vigil, laying candles, glow sticks and photos of parties past at the doors of Nation.

But come Friday, those same clubbers will have reason to groove again, as the Buzzlife production company returns to the District with a new Friday night party at Nation. Called Cubik, the weekly affair will continue the Buzz crew's tradition of showcasing local, national and international DJ talent.

"We're really excited and looking forward to being back. From the initial, um, buzz out there, it's good, and people are excited that we're coming back," said Buzz founder and resident DJ Scott Henry. "We're keeping our fingers crossed."

Since Buzzlife, the company behind Buzz, pulled out of Nation last year, the crew has been throwing parties at Trust in Baltimore. But Henry said those parties weren't financially viable, partly because the company's fan base is mostly in Washington. Those fans were sometimes put off by the drive to Baltimore and the early closing time at Trust -- 2 a.m., compared with nights that sometimes didn't end until 6 a.m. at Nation. Yet Henry is quick to note that Cubik, although a Buzzlife event, won't just be a Buzz rehash.

"The name change has a lot to do with a new day for us," Henry said. "We are going to do some things differently to make it a little more widely acceptable for different groups of people."

Part of that will include a new upstairs DJ area, featuring '80s synthpop and its modern incarnations, including electro.

The management at Nation is also emphatic that Cubik will be a different event. "This cannot be Buzz, it will never be Buzz again," said Mat Yuriditsky, general manager at Nation. "We're not trying to pull anything over anyone's eyes."

Cubik will instead cater to "an older crowd, more mature," he said. "We're going to be turning off some people, and that's what we want to do. We want the crowd that's coming to have fun and not cause problems."

He added that Nation will also have different hours for Cubik, opening an hour earlier at 9 p.m. and closing two hours earlier at 4 a.m.

Nevertheless, Washington electronic dance music enthusiasts hailed the return of a Buzzlife weekly event.

"I think it's a great thing. It's definitely a good time for the dance music culture in D.C.," said Barrett Atwood, president of the D.C. Nightlife Coalition, a group that promotes the city's nightlife.

"A lot of things that were said about Buzz were greatly exaggerated in the first place, like rampant drug use," Atwood said. "The purpose of the party was for the dance music. I think it always was and it always will be."

Buzz's exit last year was a blow to the entire District scene, Atwood said. "Buzz was good at exposing new people to this type of music, which has a trickle-down effect." Over the year that Buzz has been gone, Atwood said he's noticed fewer big-name DJs coming through town.

Henry hopes to change that. The lineup for the first Cubik includes Henry spinning a four-hour set, Suneel, John B, Implicit and others. Buzzlife has already begun talking to major DJs about stopping in to spin, including marquee names such as Goldie, Craze, Dieselboy and Sandra Collins.

The timing of the return has another significance for Buzzlife as well. This October marks the 10-year anniversary of Buzz. The date of the anniversary party is still up in the air, depending on the booking schedules of the DJs invited to spin, but Henry says one thing has already been decided: That event will be called Buzz.

says catering too an older crowd, almost has the sounds of Masoud's gig, but it is Henry that's being quoted. It should be fine, probably be a few unhappy ravers but most will be fine since there is no dress code.

Is the whole club going to be 21+ instead of just the upstairs lounge?
