  3. Saturday, December 5th, 2009 [ K O N T R O L ] minimal techno + avant house every 1st Saturday at The Endup featuring from Berlin: ::: ARGY ::: (Poker Flat . These Days . Objektivity . Cocoon) (Raum...Musik . Liebe*Detail . Defected) Since exploding onto the scene in 2005 with his unforgettable "Love Dose" EP on Poker Flat, Argyris Theofilis aka Argy has, in the years since, earned himself a spot in dance music's upper echelons through a tireless devotion to the "deeply musical, yet strikingly state-of-the-art" tech house music he loves. Now, several releases and a slew of remixes and collaborations later on top labels like Raum Musik, Liebe*Detail, Defected, and Cocoon, Argy brings his widely- renowned DJ prowess to [KONTROL] in his SF debut! and from NYC via Berlin: ::: FUNCTION ::: (Sandwell District . Infrastructure . Synewave . Ostgut Ton) Dave Sumner aka Function has been a respected name in the techno world for over a decade. In addition to classic mid-'90s releases on Synewave and follow ups on his own Infrastructure label, he was also the mysterious figure behind many of the "User" records lovingly hammered by Richie Hawtin during his "Decks, EFX & 909" period. Now living in Berlin, Dave has gone on to set up the highly regarded and immensely popular Sandwell District imprint with frequent collaborator Regis. Argy, aka Argyris Theofilis, born of Rhodes, Greece, is one of these artists, if not the epitome of this way of life. Ultimately dedicated to his work, his passion is clear whether he's speaking through words or through his deeply musical, yet strikingly state-of-the-art House music. Born in 1985, the young man rose to immediate notoriety after his breakthrough into the upper ranks whilst living in London, with his debut "Love Dose" EP on Poker Flat in 2005. Since then, a series of detailed, lovingly expressed cuts followed on Poker Flat, Raum Musik, Liebe*Detail, Cocoon, Deeply Rooted House and Cargo Edition (as Jobim's Cousin), proving his ability to create a diverse range of innovative yet functional sounds. At the same time as producing new releases, and delivering numerous stand-out remixes for labels as revered as Ibadan, Simple and even Defected, Argy's DJ persona truly came alive, seeing him grace some of the most respected and sought after DJ booths in the world. Since his first electrifying affairs with night-time culture as an early teenager, including memorable club experiences headed by the U.S. House scene's finest, he was fascinated with the boldness and the power that the DJ could communicate with an audience. Indeed, it was the dedicated concentration of the DJ, and in turn the energetic response of the crowd, that locked him onto dreams of performing such wonder himself. Three years ago, after his first visit to Berlin's Panorama Bar, Argy had found a new inspiration, and a new dancefloor for which to design his productions. He counts the venue as the most intimate of locations to share his music. 2007 saw Argy's growth as an artist reach new heights, as his increasingly busy touring schedule, accompanied by the hit "Unreliable Virgin" on Sven V‰th's Cocoon imprint, spread his message even farther afield. In 2008, after a period of concentrated focus in his Berlin Studio, he presents his first full-length project, with his family label Poker Flat, in the shape of "Focus On: Argy". There are three important parts to the release; firstly a unique and superbly unconventional DJ mix, which explores the present, past and possible future of his sound, secondly, two 12' vinyls featuring six unmixed, new collaborations with artists such as Solomun, DJ Gregory, Jerome Sydenham and The Mole to name but a few. Thirdly "Focus On: Argy" highlights Argy's great ability to give the remixes he's done for other artists his own very special touch. It's a project that he feels very passionate about; the concept aims to highlight the power and the talent of the various producers he worked alongside, and the pleasing and almost mythical "third artist" that can arise from such collaborations, shaping the music in ways otherwise unimaginable. The album stands as a wonderful snapshot of Argy's abilities and puts on display the skills that have rocketed him into new realms in these three short years since his debut release. Coming across on both a personal and musical level with the kind of clarity and focus that is rare to find in someone of relatively few years, especially considering the hazy party culture of the Techno scene, Argy represents the new breed of clear headed talent, who have proved to be a consistent driving force in modern electronic dance music. ===> LINKS: Artist profie on Poker Flat: http://www.s-e-n.ws/cms/index.php?cccpage=pokerflat_artists_detail&set_pokerflat_artists=44 Discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Argy Myspace (w/ music samples): http://www.myspace.com/argymusic http://www.myspace.com/thesedaysrecords ===> AUDIO: Argy - Love Dose: Argy - Unreliable Virgin: ===> VIDEO: Argy - Live @ Secretsundaze, London (2008): _________________________________________________________ FUNCTION One of techno's true underground heroes, Function, real name Dave Sumner, has been DJing and making music for over 15 years. Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid-90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild's Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint. Together with Karl O'Connor aka Regis he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label. More recently, Dave moved to Berlin and, still working with O'Connor, set up the acclaimed Sandwell District imprint. Featuring releases by Regis/Kalon, Silent Servant, Female and Ian Richardson, the label is kicking against minimal blandness with dynamic, harder-edged yet curiously accessible techno. In particular, Function's own bleep-techno killer 'Isolation' and the old school-styled follow up, 'Anticipation' are some of the best releases of the past year. It's little wonder then that Sandwell District was recently featured as label of the month on Resident Advisor, as well as being featured in a podcast mixed by Dave himself (with track selection help from Regis) which has been met with much praise from critics and fans alike. So far this year the pace has picked up still. He has been featured as one of Beatport's artists to watch, his 'Anticipation' EP held the number 1 slot as Juno's top selling techno record for over 6 weeks. And with remixes so far this year of Miss Kittin and the Hacker and Ben Klock, Function is, despite his enduring legacy, still an artist very much on the rise. ===> LINKS: Beatportal article on Function (w/ music): http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/the-function-of-identity-in-techno/ Resident Advisor feature on Sandwell District: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?913 Discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Function MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/function_dave ===> AUDIO: Sandwell District's Resident Advisor Podcast (2009): http://www.mixesdb.com/db/index.php/2009-10-19_-_Sandwell_District_-_Resident_Advisor_(RA.177) Function's Podcast for The Bunker, NYC (2008): http://www.kontrolsf.com/K54/Function_Bunker_Podcast_2008.mp3 ===> VIDEO: Regis & Function (aka Sandwell District) live @ DROID Interface 26 (2009): _________________________________________________________ http://www.kontrolsf.com
  4. Saturday, November 7th, 2009 [ K O N T R O L ] minimal techno + avant house every 1st Saturday at The Endup featuring from Berlin: SAMMY DEE (Perlon . Hello?Repeat . Poker Flat. Kanzleramt) As one half of the duos Pantytec (with Perlon founder Zip) and Half Hawaii (with SF fave Bruno Pronsato), Sammy Dee can often be found pressing buttons and tweaking knobs behind banks of gloriously blinking lights, but it's when he's behind a pair of 1200s that this legend truly soars. Would we be inviting him back for yet a third time otherwise? Come hear why Sammy's been helping shape the sound of minimal house and techno worldwide for over a decade, and prepare to "Get Perlonized"! and from Copenhagen: MARTINEZ (Re:connected . Moon Harbour . Dessous . Audiomatique) Swedish-born Martin Swanstein is on a roll. In addition to a string of excellent productions on choice labels such as Moon Harbour, Lomidhi, and his own Out Of Orbit and Re:connected, he has also reworked tracks by the likes of Trentem¯ller, Underworld, Miss Kittin, and Robert Babicz, as well as compiling the first ever mix album for Steve Bug's Audiomatique imprint. Now Martinez brings his techy "Cosmic House" sound to the Endup at last in his SF debut! with residents: CRAIG KUNA (Platform . ESDJCO) http://www.myspace.com/craig1 SAMMY D (Classic . Dirtybird . Sammy began to DJ in the late eighties, and hosted residencies at such clubs as Tresor and Ostgut in his hometown of Berlin in the early nineties. A particular night, which made Ostgut's Panorama bar famous, and which still continues to a packed house is "...Get Perlonized." The night has arguably become one of the most consistently successful club nights in Europe. Originally organized together with Pantytec production partner and Perlon label co-founder Zip, the duo continues to put together a showcase of unique music, that has now reached an international audience. Complementing Zip, Sammy's unique blend of stripped down house and techno sets have always proved to be part of the foundation of the night. When Sammy is on the decks there is no doubt that he is recognized as one of the key veterans of electronic music. Aside from his impeccable DJ sets, Sammy Dee is also well known for his successful co-productions. In 1997, having already worked with the likes of Heiko Laux, Sammy's ears were well tuned when he met Zip at the Peak Club in Offenbach. In 1998 Pantytec was formed. The whimsical power collaboration between Sammy and Zip, brought the first release of the still highly acclaimed ep, "Into the Duster," which pushed the two innovators into the then avant-garde minimal spotlight. The 2003 release of the distinguished full-length album "Pony Slaystation" solidified the duo's reputation as one of Perlon's flagship projects. Shortly after Pantytec was formed, Sammy got together with good friend Guido Schneider in 1999 for some studio time. They produced several tracks, but it was not until 2005 that the hit "Styleways," popped onto the charts. The next year formed another imaginative co-production with new Berlin import Bruno Pronsato. The sound of Half Hawaii was introduced to the public with the early 2007 release of "Into You/Out of You" on Perlon. The second Half Hawaii ep "mir nichts/dir nichts" on Hello? Repeat was also widely successful. ===> LINKS: MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/deesammy Discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/sammy%20dee Sammy's website: http://www.sammydee.com/ ===> AUDIO: Sammy Dee - DJ Set: http://www.eardear.com/audio/index.php?artistid=16 ===> VIDEO: Live @ The "Lock-In Rave", Minneapolis, 2008: Live in San Francisco, 2009: __________________________________________________________ MARTINEZ Martinez, by birth Martin Swanstein, was born in 1981 and raised in the southernmost part of Sweden. At an early age he discovered techno and house music. Since he already played various instruments it was a natural progression to begin producing music himself. He also got into DJing and started hunting down techno records and got into mixing. At this time Martinez was too young to attend clubs, so instead he arranged his own techno & house parties on the beach just on the seaside of Helsingborg, with himself and friends as DJs. In 2000 Martinez moved from his small Swedish hometown to the more open musical climate of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. This encouraged him to put even more time and energy into his music productions and not long after this he landed a record deal with the renowned Guidance label in Chicago. Martinez's sound begun in the deeper & jazzier fields of electronic music, but in the middle of 2003 Martinez began to feel a stronger passion for the techier and more experimental sides of house music. He started to work more with samples and electro-based sounds as well as introducing something he's coined as "cosmic house" - a spacey house sound mixing up tech, atmosphere and colourful melodies. Not long after this, Martinez received a call from Steve Bug interested in a release on his deep/tech house imprint, Dessous recordings. This resulted in the "Skywalker EPî, which didn't disappoint and inspired a whole new side to Martinez's music, edgier and more twisted. The more so the better! In the summer of 2004 Martinez launched his own label, Out Of Orbit Recordings, which has been a platform not only for his own music, but for his friends too: Trentemoller had a huge success with Beta Boy/Orb003 and Zvukbroda, Nima Gorji, Robert Babicz, Jussi Pekka & Robert Leiner have also released material. Martinez has also released two tracks on the Berlin based Get Physical label. in 2005 ìShadowboxingî came out on Steve Bug's new imprint, Audiomatique Recordings. In November that year, Martinez also released a vinyl only album called ìInternal Spaceî on his Out Of Orbit imprint. It was praised and played by Sven V‰th, John Digweed and Loco Dice to name a few. Towards the end of 2006 Martinez's music taste and productions began to develop in new directions again, and he ventured deeper into his love for the minimalistic techno-oriented sounds. More stripped down and focused on fewer sounds. After a while in the studio experimenting with this sound he launched a new label called: ìRe:connectedî, an output for Martinez's more minimal and techno-oriented productions. Martinez's first two releases on Re:connected exploded and were highly supported by major international DJs such as Richie Hatwin, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven V‰th, Loco Dice and Miss Kittin. 2007 witnessed the continual success of productions in this vein, and his inspiration has been so overflowing that he will already release his second full length album, "A Chemical Imbalance" in November. This release is a modern techno album with influences of ambient, dub, and early deep house, influenced by his love for the label Guidance. Martinez also has great deck skills and this, along with impeccable taste, has given him a strong DJ reputation worldwide. He's often seen in the booths of various quality clubs and parties around the globe. Heís played together with major DJs such as Michael Mayer, Miss Kittin, Guido Schneider, Onur Ozer, Loco Dice & Sven B‰th, in clubs such as Weetamix in Geneva, Amnesia & Space in Ibiza, Nitsa in Barcelona, Cocoon in Frankfurt and Panorama Bar in Berlin to name a few. ===> LINKS: Resident Advisor feature: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?702 MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/martinezreconnected: http://www.myspace.com/martinez_outoforbit Discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Martinez Blog: http://martinez.kluster.org/ ===> AUDIO: Martinez - DJ set recorded at home 09.24.09 http://soundcloud.com/martinez_copenhagen/dj-set-recorded-at-home-24-09-2009 Martinez - Live @ Kubik, Hamburg 06.06.09 http://www.zshare.net/audio/6106612933a62044/ ===> VIDEO: Live @ Amnesia Closing Party, Ibiza, 2007: __________________________________________________________ http://www.kontrolsf.com

  8. [ K O N T R O L ] 4 YEAR ANNIVERSARY featuring from Jena, Germany in their West Coast debut: WIGHNOMY BROTHERS (Freude am Tanzen . Musik Krause) Robag Wruhme and Monkey Maffia, known collectively as The Wighnomy Brothers, are best friends, label owners, production partners, and one of planet Earth's most entertaining and sought-after DJ teams. Known for their remix-heavy, vodka-soaked extended sets, the delightful duo from Jena, Germany have travelled the globe far and wide rocking parties and festivals, but thanks to their distaste for a certain ex-President of ours, they have refused to play the US. Until now. We simply adore these guys and without question, they have held a slot near the top of our "most wanted" list since we first sought out on this colorful voyage. Thus, it is with great pride and pleasure that we celebrate four years of bringing forward-thinking techno and house to San Francisco with a four hour set by the inimitable, incomparable, and absolutely unmissable Wighnomy Brothers in their exclusive West Coast debut. with [KONTROL] residents: ALLAND BYALLO (Nightlight . Wighnomy Brothers are Robag Wruhme and Monkey Maffia. Greetings, friends of the savoury palate. There are more or less three different stylistic methods concerning food ingestion: 1. orderly consumption; 2. suffering through some form of diet and; 3. a balanced feast. The Wighnomy Brothers of Jena have applied the latter, not only to the taking in of nature’s fruitage, but by applying this also to their daily intake of music. Next is to deftly inform the rest of the world. Hereby they purloin not only the vinyl classics of others, but keep to the ultimate aim of keeping their own irons in the forge. The two, tone-artists junkies Gabor Schablitzki (alias Robag Wruhme) and Soeren Bodner (alias Monkey Maffia), react to and revolve around the verbal confrontation. Both tap into you, starting stealthily as a mere bud in your soul, which eventually conquers your musical devotion. It all began with blond perms, armbands, striped stretch pants, heavy (emphasis on heavy) metal and everything that goes with that image. Actually, that is just a collection of lies told with a sigh and a smile. The two buddies’s got to know each other in 1988 while break dancing. The way it happens with some adolescents, the different music styles that passed through their eardrums started with Hip Hop, early electronica of every colour, ambient, house, techno, jazz, funk, and even alternative/independent rock. Both soon concluded that the true sound aesthetic is far away from the instruments; at full blast it is only what pours out of the grooves in the vinyl. This being the case, the established “Phonothek†absorbs, selects and then releases product. The first refuge: Gabor stood in the mid-90’s as “The Chill-Out DJâ€, behind the decks on many a relaxing floor of mother earth. In the meantime he played with Herbie Hancock and stood as a virtuoso in a keyboard shop. In 1996 with Volker Kahl he started the project “Beefcakeâ€. With his, rather experimental but simultaneously harmonious, electronica-devoted release he had notched his own international respect. Until 1997, Gabor & Soeren dashed through the Thuringian club and party scene, and are currently residents in the renowned Club Kassablanca in Jena. However only since April 97 they are known as the Wighnomy Brothers. Since the founding of the Freude am Tanzen label, business has steadily improved. Of course, not without the stumbling blocks and setbacks that happen with marketing mechanisms. However, in accord with the motto “Stehter Tropfen höhlt den Stein†(words of wisdom which mean when translated, steady drops will drill a hole in stone), the FAT vehicle with the Wighnomy Brothers steam engine stays on track. Also, for the last two years there is the added train car called Musikkrause and, the friendly collaboration with the Cologne based Kompakt stable must also be mentioned here. The always multifaceted style of the WB’s has been further developed through club experience, production, and still more flavour expansion efforts. This all brings a functional kick with the ever-present view to the thoroughly rocked dance floor. Originally, they were native to deep and traditional house together with Latin, vocal, and Nujazz flavouring. The musical spectrum lying between advanced in the direction of “raving with reasonâ€. Therefore, stirring, intelligent, technotronic, wide ranging dance music of incalculable worth to body and soul welcomes you. Everything out of the speakers goes straight to the bones, bringing your blood to a boil whether minimal, bounce, shuffling, break, or jazzed tracks. Both gentlemen are solo artists: Robag Wruhme (also as producer) and Monkey Maffia, allowing (when the “blessed union†is on hiatus) both gentlemen the liberty to give and receive unique inspirations. This serves the Wighnomy Brothers the benefit of bringing fresh impressions to the table when collaborating. Monkey-Soeren is also the owner of the Fatplastics recordstore in Jena: quite the ideal refuge and communications platform. Wodka raus, Wighnomy frei!!! He quickly stepped up from playing at local bars to holding down residencies at Stealth and The Bomb, two of the country’s most respected underground clubs. He’s been billed alongside the likes of Richie Hawtin, Damian Lazarus, Craig Richards, Ricardo Villalobos and Andy Weatherall to name just a (very) few. He’s played at some of the best clubs in the UK, including regular slots at Fabric, and worldwide he’s guested everywhere from Ibiza , to Berlin, to Australia. As well as all this, he’s running two of his own labels named Leftroom and Leftroom Limited (www.leftroom.com), and he has tracks signed to labels with co-producer Craig Sylvester. Recently Matt also has teamed up with Crosstown Rebels, by joining the new Rebel DJ Agency. So how did he come so far so quickly? The answer is simple. Matt is a workaholic with a seemingly tireless dedication to forging his own unique style. Drawing on everything from deep house and techno, through to stripped down bleeps and Germanic mayhem, he’s spawned his own hybrid strain of electronic funk. 11. Sunday May 17th, 2009 BIONIC + AURALISM Bionic joins forces with San Francisco's very own Auarlism Records. Ready to bring the heat, COTK, Dead Seal and Moniker will keep the party going all the way through Sunday night. Where: The Triple Crown 1760 Market Street @ Octavia San Francisco 10pm-2am | 21+ $5 before 11pm > $8 after COTK live's recent recording: http://www.auralismrecords.com/Mixes/COTKlive_HarryDentons_3_19_09.mp3 Established in Florida circa 1999 but incubated in the friendly quarters of the San Francisco techno scene, Coalition of the Killing is the partnership forged between Auralism Records founders Jason Short and Marc Smith. Under their aegis, the Auralism label has become one of the most talked about electronic music brands in an urban landscape literally busting at the seams with them. But even with a to die for artist roster it is easy to forget that Short and Smith founded the label back in 2005 as a vehicle for their own work as Coalition of the Killing. In 2008, from this solid foundation, they made a huge commotion in the techno scene with remixes on Chris Fortier's esteemed album remix project to EPs like "Backwards on Pony" on Karloff. These, amongst others, helped to establish an "official" sound for the pair last year. It has been described as equal parts experimental etherealism and funky house bounce with deep heady bass grooves that lock down the insistent dance floor throb. Last year the two brought that sound to the San Francisco masses at the annual Lovefest event. Playing to a literal sea of bobbing heads, thousands of dance music fans gave Coalition of the Killing a huge thumbs up. In 2009, Short and Smith hope to build on this forward momentum with new releases on Nightlight and, of course, Auralism. They are also looking to partner with other labels looking to release high-quality underground techno. The plan is to further expand their sound with more sonic explorations while steering themselves in an even more floor friendly direction while continuing their experimentation with new forms. Also look for the two to make a strong live performance impression this year globally by incorporating more hardware and instrumentation into their already stunning live PA sets. Heads up world, 2009 looks to be the year of the Coalition. Beatport has already named them one of their artists to watch in 2009 so let that serve as fair warning. After making a splash in the late nineties on definitive labels like Force Inc. and Tresor, he’s had an inestimable impact on the development of current club sounds, yet consistently chooses the less traveled road: working as live producer in a world of DJs; injecting emotion into functional electronic dance music; quietly building a label family of unclassifiable artists on his own imprint, Persona. After selling his guitar in 1993, Walker began assembling a synth-based hardware studio while in university in Athens, GA. Inspired by Jeff Mills’ Live at the Liquid Room he became obsessed with rhythm. A string of recordings appeared on Matrix Records in Detroit – including the 1997 single Amphetamine Sulphate – and later on Deepfried (Grand Rapids, MI) and Tektite (Austin, TX). A year later, his first European release Artificial Music for Artificial People was picked up by Cristian Vogel's British imprint, Mosquito, and Walker hit the live circuit. Armed with only an AKAI MPC2000 sampler and a DJ mixer, he did what a DJ never could: move a club crowd with sounds shaped by his own hands. This original approach was welcomed across Europe and in Japan as well as his native US. 1999 saw Walker’s debut on Berlin’s Tresor Records with Nothing Produces Stark Imagery, followed up by the now-classic minimalist experiment, Stabiles, on Mille Plateaux. These productions proved to be seminal in the development of minimal techno. Walker continued to release on labels such as Minus and Force Inc. until, in 2001, he set up his own imprint, Persona Records. Persona released eleven records in the US culminating in the second landmark album of Walker’s career to date: Live Extracts (2003). Live Extracts captured the sound and atmospherics of Walker’s in-club performances and was soon licensed by Tresor. Persona restarted in 2005, this time in Berlin. Now based in Europe, Walker performed in every capital and made incursions as far afield as Australia and Russia. Soon after, he released the downtempo album Grounded in Existence and a breakbeaty techno EP, Travel Plaza. These releases showcased Walker’s increasing attention to nuance, dynamics, and melody. Concentricity, Walker’s fourth full-length, was released in 2007. ===> LINKS: MySpace (with music samples): www.myspace.com/stewartwalker Website: http://personarecords.com/stewart-walker Discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/stewart%20walker ===> AUDIO: Stewart Walker - Live in Montreal, 2008: http://www.personarecords.com/liveshows/StewartWalker_Fricoti_2008.mp3 Stewart Walker - Live @ DEMF, 2002: http://www.personarecords.com/liveshows/StewartWalker_DEMF2002.mp3 Preview Stewart Walker tracks on BeatPort: https://www.beatport.com/ja-JP/html/content/artist/detail/5904/stewart_walker ===> VIDEO: Stewart Walker - Live @ Break & Enter, 2008: Stewart Walker - Live @ Space:Garage, 2007: __________________________________________________________________ DARIO ZENKER Just in time, the ‘Free State’ of Bavaria has produced a new son to relight its techno torch. Munich born and raised Dario Zenker is writing his own chapter in the long story of electronic music from Germany’s dirty south. It all started with listening to Michael Jackson as a kid, then Dario moved on to underground hip hop to rile the neighbors.Several visits from the not-so-friendly neighborhood police later, Dario’s father, a pro audio engineer, introduced the wunderkind to music programming and imparted the tools which later consumed him. At 15 Dario started to DJ, and not too long after he received his club education from the legendary Ultraschall. In 2005 at the ripe old age of 21, Dario landed his residency at Harry Klein which he still maintains today.2006 saw his debut vinyl release and in the space following Dario managed to sprinkle his magic chuga chuga dust on some of the world’s finest minimal techno labels.Whether DJ-ing or playing live, in just a few years Dario has built up a reputation for freaky experimental sets which never seem to stay in the same place for too long. Constantly innovating Dario has never been content walking a straight line with the crowd. To attempt to put it into words:bomb, duck, cover, swerve, bomb, swerve, bomb bomb.In 2008 ‘the’ youngin became ‘our’ youngin joining the hallowed ranks of the Vakant crew with Dario’s split personality ‘Sam Und Er/Womde!’ EP (VA019). Dario’s thick kink finds a natural home here on the Vakant deep freak out bus bumping and bouncing the club kids wherever they need to go. From breakdancing in the early 80's to his present studio efforts, he always kept his focus on beats and sounds of genres to come. Starting with the earliest electro hip-hop, passing through time and space to the present and future of electronic music, his selections are open minded but always have a dancefloor sensibility. Not being satisfied with spoon feeding or accepting convenience, André has chosen the paths less traveled. Helping foster the rave scene in Santa Barbara; playing at the first mega-rave in the US (Raveamerica); releasing one of the first (if not THE first) underground electronic dance music mixed CD's (Fusion, Volume 1); his involvement with the seminal San Francisco techhouse event/DJ crew, Urban Development; to playing with international legends for Space Children, he has been recognized for decades as a stand alone talent who brings something special to the lineup. Sharing the decks with some of the heaviest hitters on the planet, he understands how to rock a crowd as well as to tell a story. No two sets from André are alike. Each moment drives the relevance of the music selection. Each moment is unique. The sound: warm, spacey, funky, soulful techno. April - 10 - 2009 WERD & NON-FAT Present SPRUNG w/ TOUANE (persona * liebe*detail * prologue) Italian born Marco Tonni's floor-oriented funk filled minimal techno has been featured in mixes from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Troy Pierce and Steve Bug among others. Known for his ability to cross boundaries between jacking rhythms and an intricate layered depth of sound. We are excited to share his live set with you and take you on a journey into new sounds and space. * * * alonside NIKITA (non-fat, listed, the endup) ROOZ (deep blue) NICK WILLIAMS (werd) BRANDON WADE (werd) KIM KONG (non-fat, bitches get stitches) GOMEZ (werd) * * * Underground - SF $15 | 10pm-6am | 21+ For details please visit http://www.werd-sf.com . Touane is Marco Tonni, born in 1979 in Rimini, a tourist-choked seaside in the north of Italy. After playing bass and guitar in rock bands during his youth, he began to experiment with electronic music at 17, creating music to reconfigure the incomplete memories of his favourite songs into a new and signature sound. After moving to the more lively city of Bologna, Tonni DJ'd and performed live at the famous Link club while still at university. He worked to spread a fresh DIY aesthetic to non-musicians in the college town and with his colleagues organized a series of events and parties, which became, by early 2004, the Homework Festival, a showcase of young and emerging computer artists and musicians in and around Bologna. The same year, Tonni relocated to Berlin. As part of the Persona stable, his individual sound was packaged into the 2005 debut 12†Afasia. This and other early tracks were immediately charted by DJs such as Troy Pierce, Falko Brocksieper, Jeremy Caulfield and Steve Bug. Tonni then released the nuanced, critically acclaimed studio album, Awake, which garnered him attention from press and fans alike. A European tour followed with stops in Madrid, Moscow, and Rome. 2006 saw the consolidation of Tonni’s talents. First with the chart-topping single Bassic, licensed for Fabric Live – Tiefschwarz and for XLR8R’s Berlin Issue compilation CD; then with releases on Dumb-Unit, Trenton, Regular, and finally Persona with two more singles. Tonni crossed the Atlantic several times in 2007, bringing his sound to the US, Canada and Japan. He released an album, Figura, and an EP, Malto, on Persona, as well as taking on more management duties for the label. There were also releases and remixes for Trenton (including the track Action Painting, featured in Philip Sherburne mixes) Curle, Lan Muzic, and a split EP with Ulysses for Hamburg’s Liebe*Detail. Recent offerings have included The Birds (Persona), a collaboration with Alberto Andreoni on Davide Squillace’s Minisketch, and an as yet unnamed collaboration with Andrea Sartori. Touane's sound and dynamic character continue to rock the dancefloor and produce killer tracks. Expect nothing less come April 10th when he joins NON-FAT & WERD for what will be an amazing bass-filled evening. 15. Saturday, April 4th, 2009 [ K O N T R O L ] minimal techno + avant house every 1st Saturday at The Endup featuring from Chile: PIER BUCCI - LIVE (Crosstown Rebels . Cadenza . Cynosure . Contexterrior) (Wagon Repair . Vendetta . BPitch Control . Cocoon) Originally capturing the international spotlight alongside fellow Chilean artists Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, Pier Bucci has over the last decade become one of the most respected names in modern techno, due in part to tracks like 2007's monster hit, "Hay Consuelo". His unique live performance, which fuses Latin rhythms and elegant melodies with a German sense of efficiency and dancefloor-friendly beats, has landed him slots at top clubs across the globe, as well as appearances at most major festivals including Sonar, MUTEK, and DEMF. and from Toronto via Berlin: JEREMY P. CAULFIELD (Dumb-Unit . Trapez . WMF Records) (Ware . Num . Alphahouse . Adjunct) As a DJ of 15 years and an integral figure in the rise of the Toronto techno scene, Jeremy P. Caulfield is a rare example of an artist who can deftly combine experience, skill, and forward-thinking ideas in style. In addition to running the acclaimed "neuro-minimal" label Dumb-Unit, these days Jeremy plays the world's best clubs and festivals nearly every weekend, thanks to his tricked-out, re-edit heavy sets which have established him as one of North America's finest DJs. with [KONTROL] residents: ALLAND BYALLO (Nightlight . Much has been written about the recent emergence of Chile as an unexpected source of cutting edge electronica. Pier, alongside fellow countrymen and women are producing some of the finest and most original electronic music at the moment. Pier's own take on techno uses classic Latin rhythms and vocals, with his love of abstract electronics, and Sheffield bleeps, combining this with his haunting Andean melodies, whilst colorful characters zip through his music, makes a lively collage of influences, underpinned by solid dancefloor beats. A brief history of the last ten years show's Pier to be very busy. From the first releases in the late 90's on Dandy Jack's Ruta 5 Austral compilation, four acclaimed e.p.'s and a highly acclaimed album for Crosstown Rebels. The fruits of his collaborations with Luciano, bore the Monne Automnne [Lo-Fi Stereo, Germany] and Lucien-n-Luciano album projects for labels such as Peacefrog and Cadenza, Skipsapien together with Daniel Nieto [u-cover, Belgium; Mutek Rec, Canada], Mambotur with Argenis Brito [Multicolor, Germany], Bucci/Pink Elln together with Tobias Freund [Cynosure Records, Canada] and works with his brother Andres as Bucci [WMF Rec, Berlin; Cynosure Records, Canada] have been equally well received. Last year we had releases on Wagon Repair, Cocoon, Cynosure and remixes for BPitch Control. The single of Hay Consuelo and the Chiloé e.p. for the Rebels. In 2008 Pier has and the soon to be released album collaboration with Max Loderbauer and Argenis Brito as Maluco on Karaoke Kalk and further Pier Bucci e.p.'s are to follow in this year. After all this studio time and experience, it's easy to understand why Pier's live set is known as one the best around. His explosive combination of Latin & European influences, dynamically delivered, is always guaranteed dancefloor entertainment. ===> LINKS: Pier Bucci's discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/pier%20bucci Pier Bucci on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/buccipier ===> AUDIO: Pier Bucci - Live @ Less Iz More 04.02.06: http://www.audiobeats.net/app/livesets/show/4205-pier-bucci-live-less-iz-more-4-2-2006 Preview Pier Bucci tracks on BeatPort: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/3568/Pier%20Bucci ===> VIDEO: Pier Bucci - L'Nuit music video: Pier Bucci - Live in Rome: Getting silly with Pier: __________________________________________________________________ JEREMY P. CAULFIELD At a time when so much techno feels like endless variations on a played-out theme, it’s heartening to know that there are still a handful of artists, labels and DJs who can combine experience, skill and forward-looking ideals in style. Step forward Jeremy P. Caulfield, who amply ticks all of the above boxes. As proprietor of leading neuro-minimal imprint Dumb-Unit, DJ of widely-acclaimed repute, and occasional producer of stripped-back, ominous dancefloor bombs, Jeremy has emerged from his early days on the Canadian techno circuit to become a leading light of today’s underground club scene. Using his fifteen years of DJing experience as a springboard, Jeremy has utilised Dumb-Unit as a pivotal platform for the blossoming careers of artists including Butane, Lee Curtiss, Sweet N’ Candy and Seph, loosely defining a hinterland micro-scene of murky, intricate sounds that play with the darkest recesses of the mind while remaining firmly attached the propulsive drive of the dance-floor. It’s an ambiguous definition best articulated by his series of Detached:Works mix tapes and CDs, which over the course of three volumes and 10 years neatly plots Jeremy’s evolution from sparky underground enthusiast to undisputed connoisseur of finely-tuned contemporary techno. From early residencies at Toronto’s legendary Blue and Fukhouse parties (where he knocked around with like-minded local jocks Adam Marshall, Ian Guthrie and Jeff Milligan, while playing alongside techno deities like Richie Hawtin, Derrick May and Jeff Mills), Jeremy’s established himself as one of North America’s finest DJs. In 2008 alone, alongside his residency at Watergate, (in his adopted home of Berlin) Jeremy has played nearly every weekend across the globe, including gigs at renown clubs and festivals such as Fabric, Fuse, Mutek, and the Sonne Mond Sterne Festival and tours of Japan, Australia and South America . Meanwhile, his rare but intricate rocking live shows surface every once in a while to remind us that his darkly-tinged, boiled-down beats and distantly unsettling grooves are one of the most precious jewels in the jagged DU crown. Check his killer releases Dumb-Unit, Trapez and WMF if you need any proof. Somewhere between his smart, re-edit heavy sets, his vigorously spiky artist releases, and his scandalously consistent label, there lurks the charred, elusive heart of Jeremy P. Caulfield. The fun part is trying to find it. ===> LINKS: Dumb Unit website: http://dumb-unit.com/ Jeremy P. Caulfield's discography: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Jeremy%20P.%20Caulfield Jeremy P.
