  3. * Mezzanine Presents: 11.11 NITZER EBB (Germany) Formed in Chelmsford when main protagonists Douglas McCarthy (vocals) and Bon Harris (drums, programming) were just 15, Nitzer Ebb cut a dynamic swathe through the electronic music and Balaeric beat scenes of the 1980s and 90s. They were electro-punks before the genre even existed, at a time when The Prodigy were not even a gleam in fellow Essex boy Liam Howlett?s eye. Militaristic, intimidating yet always accessible, Nitzer Ebb enjoyed a string of ferocious club hits and released five critically acclaimed albums on Mute. From their first-ever single, 1984?s ?Isn?t It Funny How Your Body Works? through to their final 1995 single ?I Thought?, they were a band whose honed aggression, originality and precision were impeccable. The band?s musical adventures first began in 1982 when McCarthy and Harris, along with drummer David Gooday, formed the group whilst still at school in Chelmsford. Listening to the likes of Abwärts, Neubauten, Malaria, Daf, Cabaret Voltaire, Killing Joke and Bauhaus among many others the boys began experimenting with synthesizers and samples culminating in the release of four singles on their own Power Of Voice Communications label (a joint venture with Pet Shop Boys producer Phil Harding) before Daniel Miller was impressed enough to sign them to his own label Mute.

  8. Dc groove & one destination present: dj mario calegari spinning live at muse nightclub friday november 19th hours: 10pm - 3am open bar: 10-11pm | ketel one vodka collaborating dj's: cesar sanchez & tony smooth side entrance | muse lounge about mario calegari: there is one key word to remember while you read this biography of mario calegari?simplicity. he as a person and also as a pioneering dj/producer preaches and practices this integral part of his eccentric style and personality. however in life and as in music it?s not always the complicated things that make you stop and think. these were the days of the legendary tunnel night club with one and only, danny tenaglia holding down his weekly residency with him quickly becoming mario?s biggest inspiration but not just for the time being, but for life. for the first time mario was now finally listening to what he thought was quality house music. with this new found love of house he began to find the inspirations in the likes of dj vibe, rui dasilva, victor calderone and deep dish. so the stage was now set and mario decided to open his first record store, ?planet groove? in his home state in the year 2000. the contacts quickly started to grow in the dance music industry and the store soon became the local hot spot for the freshest dance music which then could only lead to one thing- his own after hour?s club in newark, ?fuel?. it was a major challenge for mario at first however his character led him to overcome. he slowly gathered an amazing following to attend on a regular basis to enjoy house music at its finest. there is a catalogue of amazing talent that he has featured at ?fuel? with djs such as saeed, boris, chus & ceballos, richie santana, peter bailey and aj crypt to name but a few, but of course never forgetting his friend and dj danny way, who opened the dance floor week in and week out with great dedication ?fuel? became such a big hit that mario would sometimes play for 15 hours straight because nobody wanted to leave! eventually mario?s nightclub would be the key to open many different doors for people who were involved and loved house music in the area. you would think with all this going on in mario?s life that he would have no time for anything else, but think again- mario then realized that his next step was producing the music he loved and played, so he teamed up with ray briones, a fellow brazilian from queens, new york. they began producing a really high caliber of house music. but with so much house that had gathered throughout the years influencing is mind, mario and ray's first official single ?dark samba? was released by european label ?fatal music? from holland. un-presumably it was a fantastic success for them. renowned international djs from around the world charted ?dark samba? in there top ten charts with comments that production veterans would have been proud of. today, with all the hard work mario calegari has put in over the last decade he has culminated into one of the most successful dj/producers, and promoters in the usa. with his bass driven, drum pounding, progressive style of house music he is a sure bet for any party, big or small, in the dance industry. he takes control of the crowd in his humble ways and punishes them with his percussive sounds.

  18. "Underworld became one of the most crucial electronic acts of the 1990s via an intriguing synthesis of old and new. The trio's two-man frontline, vocalist Karl Hyde and guitarist Rick Smith, had been recording together since the early-'80s new wave explosion; after two unsuccessful albums released as Underworld during the late '80s, the pair finally hit it big after recruiting Darren Emerson, a young DJ hipped to the sound of techno and trance. Traditional pop song forms were jettisoned in favor of Hyde's heavily treated vocals, barely there whispering, and surreal wordplay, stretched out over the urban breakbeat trance ripped out by Emerson and company while Smith's cascade of guitar-shard effects provided a bluesy foil to the stark music. All in all, the decision to go pop was hardly a concession to the mainstream. The first Underworld album by the trio, Dubnobasswithmyheadman, appeared in late 1993 to a flurry of critical acclaim; the trio then gained U.S. distribution for the album with TVT. Second Toughest in the Infants, the group's sophomore LP, updated its sound slightly and received more praise than the debut. Unlike the first, the LP also sold well, thanks in part to the non-album single "Born Slippy," featured on the soundtrack to the seminal film Trainspotting. By 2005, the duo had officially been joined by one of Britain's most respected DJs, Darren Price (although he contributed to A Hundred Days Off), and his work also appeared on a series of online-only EPs Underworld released during 2005 and 2006. They also recorded new material for the soundtrack of the Anthony Minghella film Breaking and Entering. Their first "proper" full-length since 2002, Oblivion with Bells, appeared in 2007. It was followed in 2010 by Barking, an album that featured numerous guest producers including Paul van Dyk, Appleblim, and High Contrast." - John Bush, AllMusicGuide
  19. * Mezzanine is ecstatic to announce a rare and epic performance by Oslo native, Lindstrom. Lindstrom has been topping the charts with his recently released album "Real Life is No Cool" featuring Christabelle.* Listen here. Raised on country and western music in the outskirts of the Norwegian oil town Stavanger, Lindstrom now lives in Oslo where he is making contemporary disco and running his Feedelity label. Following a consistent flow of highly acclaimed EPs and remixes for names like Franz Ferdinand and LCD Soundsystem and The Juan Maclean, expectations were rocketing to the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas album, which also marks Eskimo Recordings long player debut. Judging from the press and record buyers alike, the album - which might be described as downbeat space disco - more than lived up to its expectations. Whether it was that specialist dance music website or the broadsheet critic, they all seemed to pick up on the fact that these boys are not your average electronic music makers. (Lindstrom works both as a solo artist and in collaboration with Prins Thomas). Lindstrom today enjoys a cult-like status within dance music circles, and although the humble guy himself seems quite happy doing what he loves on an underground scale, it will be an interesting watch to see what the future holds for the Norwegian talent.

  23. "Spawned from the urge to do something apart from his post-rock band Fridge, Kieran Hebden's Four Tet project balances organic and programmed sounds. Hebden formed Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Adam Ilhan while still in high school. When Fridge went on temporary hiatus for Jeffers and Ilhan to attend college, Hebden spent time playing with ideas gained from hip-hop and electronica that he hadn't had time for while concentrating on the band. Eager to experiment, Hebden bought a computer and began collecting drum and sound samples. Though his tracks sounded contrary, Hebden produced them all in his flat using only his computer to loop, slice, and paste downloaded samples and rhythms. His first full-length was 1999's Dialogue, which was noticed by experimental dub pioneer Pole (Stefan Betke). The two eventually collaborated on a 12", Four Tet vs. Pole, which included an original song by each and a remix of the track done by the other artist. Around the same time, Fridge were signed to the label Go! Beat, owned by Polydor. Hebden retained Four Tet as a side project, however, and released subsequent records Pause (2001) and Rounds (2003) through Domino. The No More Mosquitoes EP and the "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth" single preceded the 2005 release of Everything Ecstatic. In 2006, Hebden put together two compilations of some of his favorite tracks, LateNightTales and DJ-Kicks, as well as Everything Ecstatic Films & Part 2. The two-disc Remixes was also compiled and released that year, as were two volumes of his Exchange Session project with jazz drummer Steve Reid. These two volumes found Hebden working under his proper name for a change. This trend continued when their third collaboration, Tongues, arrived in 2007. The four-track Ringer, issued the following year, was the first Four Tet release in over four years, and it was trailed by the critically adored full-length There Is Love in You in early 2010." - Diana Potts, AllMusicGuide
