  1. that aim shit is an anomaly that rarely works. but, define a port number in file transfer properties (use 5190). if you have a router, then port forward 5190 to the machine that you have aim running. make sure the other side has 5190 defined, and port forwarded if they have a router. if that doesnt work, then run ftp server, open up/ port forward 21 to your machine that is running ftp and shut it down once your other party has grabbed the file from you. i would suggest secure ftp, but dont know if you are computer savvy or not, so just go with regular ftp. you can grab openssh client and server (secure telnet(ssh) and secure ftp(sftp)) from here: www.openssh.org sorry if that was way more info than what you needed, but i covered the bases for you, haha. goot luck...
  2. well i personally use redhat. been usin them since i started out with linux. i wouldve dumped them a long time ago, but since im too lazy to switch to a new distro, ill stick with em. redhat 7.3 is a really primo release, and they fixed a lot of their previous qualms. but every distribution has its own qualms. and the way that redhat is marketed kind of puts a damper on the GNU/ opensource community. but i digress. as far as distributions are concerned, debian seems to be the most rock solid distro from what ive heard (although redhat 7.3 is a really good release and will make them shine in my opinion (wait i said that already, haha). suse truly sux, and ive heard some good things about mandrakes newest release. MS did a good job with xp, ill have to admit. i run the server (.net enterprise) version bumped up to sp1 (not for anything critical, but for play..i would never trust ms with anything critical) and they def. are workin towards refining the os. but of course the pure nature of the beast will hold them back. every os has its pros and cons, of course. we can also debate everything i said, and thensome till the cows come home. thats what makes this industry koool. a lot of different sides, and if you dont get too bogged down to one side, and be as open-minded as you can, then the community as a whole will benefit and shine. wow i posted twice in the same day span. thats been a first for me in a long time on clubnyc..er oops..mean clubplanet (thats what its called now, i gather...) peace....
  3. sure ill contribute to the thread on my once a month pass through..haha --> 3 pc's, 1 SUN Ultra 10 2 old pc's runnin linux (work horses/ to keep up with the opensource world), 1 new pc, amd xp 1900 runnin .net enterprise server (my play machine, porn, multimedia, video/audio editing, etc.) sun ultra10 runnin solaris 8 - (critical shit// to keep up with the commercial world.) i have used os x before...and i dont know...i just dont see the mac dominating in any area besides what it already has dominated in, the video and audio/ multimedia arena (but we shall see in the next year or so...). the risc is so much more optimized for that type o shit than the x86 architecture is. its not fully based on bsd's architecture though, just the networking pieces (what isnt based off of that structure these days though..haha), and a few pieces of the kernel have been modified. but its still a mac, based on mac principles/ most of mac's core architecture and what-not. i don't know the specifics, just the jist, cause im not a mac person. the mac people can eleaborate further on this integration. they totally fucked up in the past by making themselves totally proprietary. they have eased up on that, but to truly get ahead, they need to jump in to that market and meet some of the other competitors in the middle somewhere (as convoluted as that sounds). personally, i would love it if we could take MS's kernel out of the picture but keep its shell (explorer) and put in a linux kernel. then we'd never have any more complaints, but itll be a cold day in hell before that happens, haha. it would be truly funny to see linux dominate in the desktop arena. i doubt that will happen anytime soon, because they really need to revamp X (*nix's gui envm't) and try to streamline in it in to the scheme of things. there are pros and cons to that, of course (we all see the product..windows). happy computing
  4. I was hangin' out with JoeG while listenin to hacker doin some improv, and lemme tell you, JoeG is a kewl ass mofo that is maaaad openminded, while hacker waz doin hiiiiis freaky technoish improvish thang!!! haha, just wanted to share, and bring back that old club"nyc" vibe (the way i used to remember it! (waaaay back when.... )).
  5. hey..i was just passin through (havent posted here in ages) and saw your question. here is your answer: as doubtness said, you can use ICS which is a quick and "dirty" method of sharing your connection; the feature is embedded in xp---> the machine with the modem needs to have a nic card installed in it. make sure the other machine has a nic card in it too. you can buy a cheap hub for like 35 beans, but you dont need it (but is a better solution if in the future you want to have more machines, plus the crossover cable method may introduce some flakiness in the future, if you ever try to do anything else with your setup). if your not buying a hub, then you need to buy a crossover ethernet/ cat 5 cable. if you are buying a hub then you need to buy two straight through ethernet/ cat 5 cables. with the hub: connect a straight through from the nic card in the machine with the modem to the hub connect a straight through from the nic card in the other machine to the hub without the hub: connect the crossover cable fromthe nic card in the machine with the modem, to the nic card in the other machine. the rest is the same for either scenario: go to your network connections (start->control panel->network connections) on the machine that has the modem in it, right click on the dial up connection that is involved in calling your isp->advanced->check both boxes which say allow other netywork users....->ok it will give you a warning that it will change the nic card's ip to 192.168.0.1->ok on the other machine, go to network connections, right click on the nic card, tcp/ip->properties->check obtain an ip address automatically, and check obtain dns server address automatically....you should be all goot now ----------- on the client machine (machine without the modem), open up a command prompt (start->run->cmd); try to ping www.yahoo.com, IF you cannot resolve by name (you get request timed out), then go back to your network connections on the client machine (machine without modem)->tcp/ip->properties->check use these dns server addresses now go to the machine with the modem, open up a command prompt, and type nslookup you will see an IP address (dotted decimal address) next to a line like this Address: ------ type that address in to the space provided from the "use these dns adresses" on the client machine. in the secondary address field, type the same address in, except use a number that is one higher in the last field following the last decimal place)..... you should be all goot after that..... --------thats the jist of what you have to do------- if you want to do some reading on what your doing (also gives you step by step instructions on what you have to do), go here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ enjoy....
  6. i havent posted here in ages, but i was passin through and saw this post and wanted to give a reply, so here it goes: Maurice - This is Acid enjoy....
  7. cable's good...but youll get shitty transfers during on peak/ at other times/ if mad people have it in your vicinity..for 20 beans more you could go with earthlink dsl... for dialup...eh dont even waste yer time...go with high speed..worht the money... earthlink dialup is real good though if your considering that route..i think its like 5.99 for an account, or somethin like that...
