  4. STOLI NIGHT AT Oasis Wednesdays @ Europa 1409 E Cary Street, Richmond, VA 9:30 pm - close Tapas menu available until 10:30 this week’s guest: Moncef (95 North Records, Vinylicous Recordings, Recastow.com, Daliciousmonster.com, DC) Moncef has been spinning house music since his high school days in Morocco. He obtained his first significant club gig in the summer of 1997 at Red in Washington, D.C opening for 95 North. This led the club to offer him a Thursday night residency, which he held from May to December of 1998, before moving to a bi-monthly residency at Andalu (also in D.C.). Moncef also played alongside Kris Murphy every other Thursday at the Good Love Bar in Baltimore. He has also appeared on numerous national and international radio shows (WUMD 88.1 FM's "The Battery", WPFW 89.3 FM's "Vinylicious Hour", and countless internet radio broadcasts) and has infected heads up and down the east coast in clubs from Bambu in Miami to Filter 14 in New York City, and even at La Scene in Paris, France. As Nicolicious with fellow musician Nicolas Laget (aka Kolai), Moncef has released 2 records: "Goin On" feat. Karla Brown on 95 North Records (released May 1999) and "Vermilion Vibe" with remixes by Jask on Vinylicious Recordings (released December 1999). Moncef is now focusing on his online record store (Monfresh Recastow: www.recastow.com) that he opened a few months ago and is also planning on starting a new party in D.C. 5. vip room?!?! come on, dude, this is RICHMOND, not DC. it's in the downstairs lounge of a mediterranean restaurant. chill out on a couch and check out some tunes. this is a free night, so there is no need for a guest list. chick:dude ratio. hmm, i haven't done the math, but i'd wager it's about even. it changes over the course of the night, though, from being more dude heavy to chick heavy.

  7. Oasis Wednesdays @ Europa 1409 E Cary Street, Richmond, VA 9:30 pm - close Tapas menu available until 10:30 this week’s guest: Toby Roberts (Lemurgene, GHM, DC) Toby Roberts was born 1972, and electronic influenced music has been in his blood from the get go. He used to stroll to the library at 9 and get out DEVO's "Freedom of Choice" on a regular basis. At camp, he was tormented by the counselors because he actually liked not just "She Blinded Me With Science" but ALL of Thomas Dolby's songs! In high school he got into the Progressive scene of the 80's and early 90's enjoying the sounds of groups such as Depeche Mode and New Order, as well as the emerging DC house sounds from artists like Crystal Waters and Doug Lazy. The clubs came calling and Toby was there dancin' up a storm (your narrator will tell you it was a bit of a debacle in those days). 1990 was the year he took his knowledge of music and went to the other side of the tables. That same year he moved to Blacksburg to attend Virginia Tech and was a major player in helping to lay the foundation for the then almost non-existent electronic scene. Along with other peers itching for something new he started and spun a weekly night at Hawaii Kai nightclub that lasted over four years. Among many one-off's, Toby threw Blacksburg's first true underground rave party in 1992 with over 1000 in attendance! Over subsequent years he has been involved in many projects in and around DC, most recently Focus @ Rendezvous, Lemur Lounge, and GHM's events such as Innuendo. Toby has over the years focused primarily on house but still spins many styles of electronic music creating sets that are never predictable and always a blast. resident dj: Omar Faison downtempo house.afrobeat.nu-jazz.broken beat 21+ w/ id NO COVER a topheavy production flyer and sounds available at www.topheavy.net upcoming guests: 07/30- Toby Roberts (Lemurgene, GHM, DC) 08/06-OASIS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY featuring Sam “the Man†Burns (Red, Sanctuary, DJ Hut, DC) 08/13-Resident’s Night 08/20-DJ Aakmael vs. DJ Esquire (WDCE 90.1 FM, RVA) 08/27-Patrick Yu (Hifidinosaurs, RVA)

  12. caffeine's got busted a couple of years ago. pretty much killed richmond for a while.
  13. i don't know when those of you who have been to europa have been there, but on fri and sat there is drum and bass in the lounge, not for dancing but for background. on wednesdays (my night), the music is primarily deep house and broken beat. i bring in a guest dj most weeks to keep the sound changing a bit. as for the crowd on wednesdays: the base is older ravers (22-25) and a bunch of bio/research/medical types. that's my day job and i have been promoting this thing in and around work a lot. after that, the crowd is very random. some of the weekend types do come in and check it out, but they are not the dominant crowd there. i would encourage you guys to check it out and when you do, come up and say hello. it is definitely a fun night. the area available for dancing is small, so i don't do it as a full-on dance night, but the music is good, the drinks are good (no drink specials), and the space is very comfortable (new couches!!!!). i do have to agree with Sapexec, the town gets pretty dead early and i used to be closed down by 12, but since april, it's been pretty lively, so the early closing time no longer applies. but please, come early, stay late, and HAVE FUN!
  14. upstairs is a restaurant, downstairs is a lounge. kind of andalu/red-feeling in its design.
