2 men arrested after Rochelle Park melee Sunday, December 14, 2003 By MITCHEL MADDUX STAFF WRITER Two Florida men were in custody following an early morning fight Friday in Rochelle Park that left a North Jersey woman with a collapsed lung and a man with a serious knife wound to his arm, police said. The altercation broke out in the parking lot of the Ramada Inn near the Garden State Parkway and was prompted by the Florida men making lewd remarks to women who were leaving a nightclub in the hotel, said Rochelle Park police Detective Lt. Robert Flannelly. "One of suspects put his arm around one of the girls,'' Flannelly said. "An argument ensued, and then a fight ensued.'' The melee was started by the two Florida men, who attacked the group of five women and two men, the detective said. During the fight, Morfi Espino, 24, of Tampa, pulled out a 6-inch knife with a serrated blade and stabbed one of the men in the back and slashed his left arm, Flannelly said. Espino then slashed a woman in the back and stabbed her under her arm, puncturing her lung, which then collapsed, the detective added. Espino and his friend, Alexander Rodriguez, 25, also of Tampa, fled into the hotel where they were guests, Flannelly said. A team of three Rochelle Park patrol officers and two detectives later reviewed a hotel security camera videotape, and then conducted a door-to-door search of 25 rooms, he added. When officers reached a room shared by Espino and Rodriguez, they were invited in by one of the men's girlfriends, Flannelly said. The men, who were sleeping, had attempted to wash the blood from their clothes and shoes in the hotel room's shower, Flannelly said. Officers also recovered the knife, he said. Both men were arrested, and authorities said they later admitted to having been drinking before the incident. "Both gave sworn statements admitting their involvement," Flannelly said. Authorities charged Espino with aggravated assault, weapons violations, destruction of evidence, and disorderly conduct. Rochelle Park Municipal Judge Roy McGadey set Espino's bail at $175,000, Flannelly said. Rodriguez, who was charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, and destruction of evidence, had his bail set at $3,500, Flannelly said. Both men were being held Saturday afternoon in the Bergen County Jail.
