  3. Sat.Jan 31 ~RTB 3~Columbus~Ed Rush, Optical, B Zentz, Fixx, Doormouse and more~ 12-11-2003 18:23 (#1397569) On January 31st, 2004..... Wishing Well, Well Known Djs, and FocalPoint presents.... Rock the Bells 3::Payback 3 Rooms The DNB, Breaks, Hip Hop room The House, Trance, Techno room and the Up and Coming room. Ed Rush Jungle producer Ed Rush's name has become almost synonymous with the word "dark." With a steady string of 12-inch releases dragging drum'n'bass to hell and back, forcing taught, kettle-sized snare snaps through ringing rides and thunderous, superdense basslines, Rush, together with oft collaborator Nico Sykes, has been almost singularly responsible for jungle's eventual (re)turn to the darkside. Recording most often for Nico-related labels No U-Turn and Nu Black, Rush has also more recently begun to cast his net farther out, bringing his brooding, dank-heavy brand of nightmare drum'n'bass to such labels as Prototype and Metalheadz. First introduced to jungle through late-period hardcore (tracks such as 2 Bad Mice's "Bombscare" and Doc Scott's "Here Come the Drums"), Rush began producing after hooking Nico (a for-hire producer who lived on Rush's block) on the sound. The pair released a few forgettable tracks before buckling down and working on putting together a new sound. Nico formed No U-Turn in 1993 as a vehicle for that sound, and the pair's first proper Ed Rush twelve, "Bloodclot Artattack," was released that same year. Although he'd already been making tracks for a couple years, Rush's reputation began to grow in the wake of the 1996 backlash against the smooth, rolling atmospherics of ambient and heavily jazz-oriented jungle (Bukem, Alex Reece, Wax Doctor, PFM, etc.). With several tracks on the genre-coining compilation Techsteppin' (released by Emotif), and with darkness once again coming to the forefront among the DJs, Rush tracks such as "Guncheck," "Bloodclot Artattack," "Subway" (recorded with Dom of Dom & Roland), and "Check Me Out" began showing up in more and more (and more and more influential) DJ sets. Releases on Speed/Blue Note DJ Grooverider's Prototype label ("Kilimanjaro"), as well as twelves for Metalheadz ("Skylab") and Nico's No U-Turn offshoot, Nu Black ("Mad Different Methods," "Amtrak") further cemented Rush's rep at the forefront of a new style. Although he remains a free agent, demand for Rush tracks (as well as remixes) means he's been playing the field, releasing increasing quantities of material on a number of labels, both large and small. And while the over-the-top rumble of darkside techstep is bound to wane in popularity, Rush's most recent work has proven he's not reliant on the novelty of that sound. and Optical Born as Matt Quinn, brother of Jamie Quinn alias Matrix. (The third brother, Fergus alias Plain Clothes Man designed numerous covers for Virus and Metro, Matrix's own imprint). Optical started making music when he was 17. His first hardcore label was Phat Tunes. He recorded for No U Turn, Prototype and Metalheadz, worked with Goldie on Saturnz Return, engineered Grooverider's Mysteries Of Funk, and founded Virus Recordings with Ed Rush in 1998. Although he developed acute tinnitus when a few speakers blew up in the studio, he's still around, DJing and producing music. w/ MC Rhymetyme(Virus Recordings, Metalheadz)UK By the way Ed Rush and Optical just received the honor Album of the Year at this year's Knowledge Awards in England(so huge). Bryan Zentz(Intec, Primate, Tronic, Bush) Oh Bryan, when will you learn? I suppose producing music on just about every noteworthy House, Electro and Techno label simply isn’t enough. First you release your first album on Intec Records, which just happens to be Carl Cox’s Imprint! (A good friend and fan that you have done countless releases for) Unsatisfied, you hunkered down in the studio and gave your fans what they have been dreaming about, Disruptor. Your debut label features what can only be described as dub-tech, a drop of Jamaica with a steady lashing of techno mayhem. This journey into your mind is where you are the A & R, the producer and the man behind the Green Curtain. To top it all off, URB Magazine has selected you for an upcoming Bside. It’s about damn time. Doormouse(Addict Records, Distort, Dropbass)Miami Owner of the Distort and Addict labels based in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Doormouse has been producing some of the most slammingest sick-ass jams since 1852. The OG midwest badass. Sick! Dennis Hopper sick. Imagine camping with Dennis Hopper and he roofies you out in the woods somewhere and you wake up sewn to a family of badgers. Well he's sicker. This man will tear you a new shithole. Lots of folks talk all kinds of shit about Dan, legendary shit, meat in his ass, crossfader dick, whatever, you guys don't know shit, he's sicker than that. Dj Fixx(Bottomend Records, Kaleidoskope, Afterdark)Tampa, FL One of the pioneers of the funky breaks movement across the nation, DJ Fixx has proven just that with his incredible production and intense DJ performances. After basically carrying the Kaleidoscope Music label for over 3 years, Fixx now runs his independent monthly label, Bottom-End Records…now one of the top 5 best-selling break beat labels in the country. With over 75 12†record releases and 3 massively-distributed CDs under his belt, DJ Fixx has one of the strongest followings of any other break beat producer. Whether he’s touring in a city near you or simply in the studio producing his next anthem, Fixx always brings Nothing But Bottom! Dan Efex(Well Known Djs, Afterhours TV, Spundae Chicago) Dan is well known for his ability to draw a frenzied excitement out of even the mellowest of crowds. It is not uncommon to see fans packed shoulder to shoulder, hands in the air, as he leads them through an energetic and intoxicating journey on the dance floor. There are many who consider him to be one of the founders of the Midwest’s trance scene, a scene that is still strong and growing today. He was one of the first to introduce the Midwest to the soaring build-ups and powerful explosions characteristic of some of his styles of trance. But although Dan is perhaps best known for his trance, do not be fooled -- he is as diverse as he is skilled! His repertoire of past events includes sets with progressive trance, psychedelic trance, hard techno, hard core, hard house, slow breaks, tribal and ambient. He mixes it up and keeps it interesting. His unfailing ability to read the crowd and know precisely what to plug in ensures that he leaves no stragglers behind on his musical excursions.
