LEGO | poontin muzik Inspired by his family and the surroundings of Chicago's Latino community of Logan Square, Rafael Rodriguez, Légo, committed himself to music at an early age. His career began when he was 19 years old with his first club residency at Kaboom. Kaboom led to his 12-year residency at Red Dog's "Boom Boom Room," which is the longest running night in dance club history. Red Dog gave Légo the musical freedom that he needed to gain respect from his peers and fans alike. Being part of a night that has received worldwide attention opened the doors to production. Drawing from a wide spectrum of musical tastes and influenced by many of Chicago's DJ legends Légo pursued his musical passion. In 1997, Andy Adams of UC Music approached Légo to complete a remix for a Ralphi Rosario/Donna Blakely song entitled “Take Me Up.†Légo’s remix made it to #4 on the Billboard Dance Chart. Since then he has claimed two more Billboard hits remixing another Ralphi Rosario/Donna Blakely collaboration “Do You Like The Way That It Feels†and Rosario's 1998 romp, “Wanna Give It Up,†featuring Disco Diva legend Linda Clifford. In 1999 he produced the EP Flava In Ya Ear Vol. 2 on Afterhours which included his international hits “El Ritmo De Verdad†and “When I'm With You.†Both tracks quickly became anthems for that year's club season in Ibiza, Spain. The EP hit #1 on the International Dance Music Charts and still remains the best selling release in the label's history. “El Ritmo De Verdad†was also licensed to the French film “Le Cout De La Vie.†Légo is currently continuing his residency, “Boom Boom Room,†over at Green Dolphin, starting his new label, Poontin Muzik, mixing on radio shows such as “The Move†on XM Radio, and doing remixes for major label artists. His latest major label remix is of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love,†on Columbia UK, whose album won 5 Grammy’s at the 2004 Grammy Awards. Some of his music is available for downloads at iTunes.com. Jesse DeLa Pena "I'm trying to create a mood. The average DJ doesn't care about mood or ambiance. They just do the job and go." JESSE DE LA PENA, Chicago's premier DJ, not only creates a mood or atmosphere, he makes his own artistic statement through his unique ability to combine his many influences into a style all his own. Gracefully blending hip-hop, acid jazz, reggae, drumn bass, soul, latin and house music, etc..., DE LA constantly challenges his audience's expectations. & Ashish Shah | X'ESS A VERY SPECIAL OPENING HOUSE SET NOT TO BE MISSED!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPEN STOLI BAR FROM 9:00pm - 10:30pm!! 4. Friday, March 3rd, 2006 X'ESS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS.... SEDUCTION at CACTUS!!! This evening, X'ESS welcomes the girls of DeltaPhiOmega Sorority to Cactus for one night of Seduction!! We will be hosting a charity event for: Asha & First Book. This will be the first ever "Literacy Through Unity" event! Come and support a great cause!!! X'ESS gives special thanks to: DePaul University and UIC!!! featuring, in the House Room: XL | ChicagoSoundSource As early as age 10, XL (a.k.a. Khristaan Hillard) was captured by the deep grooves and beats of the underground. Listening to the Hott Mixx 5 from his bedroom on the South Side of Chicago, he would practice his dance moves and feel the music in his soul. As the House Music movement grew, so did XL. By the age of 16, he was sneaking into the music box to watch early legends like Farley Jackmaster Funk tear up the party. This fueled an uncontrollable passion within him to take to the decks himself. In addition to various DJ’s that inspired him, XL also attributes other musical styles like R&B, Jazz, and Gospel as having deeply influenced his own sound. Over the years, XL has played at various venues throughout Chi-Town, including: Big Wig, Harry’s Velvet Room, Slicks Lounge, Copa, Bar 13, Buzz, Red No. 5, Star Gaze, Betty’s Blue Star, and Beviamo. In his own words: “House Music first touched me through the Spirit of Dance. It was through the spirit and the vibe that made you feel like no matter what was happening in your life you always felt like you were a part of something special. That’s what influenced me to go deeper into the Movement, not just through dance, but also by playing the music; expressing back the love that was given to me through the sounds of House Music. Musically my life was affected many ways through artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Prince and Roy Ayers. I also have been inspired by turn table legends Gene Hunt (Gene, by the way, is responsible for my first major gig), Mark Grant, Dimitri From Paris and Malcolm Charles. I have been ‘in this’ for almost 20 years now and over that time have been touched by many beautiful things, beautiful people and beautiful music, and by this feel truly blessed. I hope in the next 20 years I can give back all that House Music has given me.†Julian Pena | X'ESS IN THE HIP HOP ROOM: ROTATING DJs GIVING YOU THE BEST IN HIP HOP!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $3 IMPORT DRAFTS AND LEMON DROPS!!! $5 Patron shots $4 Red Stripe Bottles $4 Blue Mother F*ckers $10 ALL NIGHT WITH RSVP (ALL PROCEDES GO TO CHARITY) RSVP HERE: http://www.xessentertainment.com/house/list/list.php?eventID=60303 CACTUS 404 south wells chicago, il 60607 21+ ID Required 9PM - 2AM ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, March 4th, 2006 X'ESS ENTERTAINMENT AND SMART CLUBBER PRESENT.... AVEX AXIOM The word Axiom meaning “self evident truth†has been a major aspect of what I am all about and I have instilled that ideal within myself to push forward my ideas. I like it to be interesting, funky, lifting, industrial like and driving, giving a hopeful feeling, a building suspenseful journey through the constant then and now, through the mind and soul of the curiously captivated. I am Inspired by the creativity and endless possibilities of electronic music, sub-cultures of raves, street crews, and society in general, along with being a graffiti artist until I got caught in the 90's. I train myself to mix in harmony on three tables under conditions where you may not find when someone performs on stage. I feel that making a practice session hard, I am more prepared when performing. I have played some wonderful and interesting events in the united states and abroad which include performing outdoor festivals, warehouse shows, concert events, prolific club nights, and performing at the world famous Love Parade festivals in Mexico and San Francisco. Also events pertaining to the movement festival in Detroit and the WMC in Miami. When I am in the studio I pursure to develop a unique twist of funky tough tribal sounds as well as ambient like intelligent sounds that I have always embraced ever since I was 15. I feel that with all the talented artists out there we can work together into a charteristic of what makes Electronic Music alive in today’s times and to further the aspect of what Electronic Music was made to be in the first place…..TO DANCE! THIS QUOTE I DEVELOPED WILL ALWYAS KEEP THE FIRE BURNING INSIDE OF ME: “To make use of the inaudible, audible, one must create from it’s absence. 5. Friday, February 17th, 2006 X'ESS ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS.... TOUCHE' AT CACTUS! featuring.... ANDRE HARRIS The city of Chicago is known for its architecture, art, windy weather and a solid tradition of celebrated House DJs and producers. Continuing this tradition is Andre Harris and styles all this own to the work music scene. Andre Harris’ love of house music inspired him to journey into djing at the age of twelve beginning with talent shows, school dances, and basement parties. His enthusiasm for music and talent carried him to the club circuit, where at the ripe age of fourteen, he spun his first residency at the Rainbow Roller Rink in Chicago. Being by no means an average DJ he began promoting events putting him side by side with other talents like Lil Louis and Farley “Jackmaster†Funk. Andre was being influenced heavily by these and other well known DJs in Chicago. Andre decided to pursue djing seriously. After graduating high school and attending college, the call to Dj was stronger than ever and once again bringing him to the world of lost parties, after hours, and raves. Sparked by this new found life in Chicago’s music scene Andre Harris was determined to be deeply involved. In 1993, he earned a Friday night residency at Club Medusa’s, where he was recognized for his skill and knowledge of the soulful harder side of house music. It wasn’t long before patrons and employees started getting him guest appearances at various venues around the city like Red Dog, Neo, Cairo, and Smart Bar to name a few, all while still promoting his own events. In 1996 Andre earned another residency at Club Elixir on Friday nights. Yet this was not enough, Andre was ready to produce music so in 1997 his first project “I Can’t Take It/Ain’t it a Groove†was released on Cajual Records, receiving good press in Mix Magazine. This single was licensed for the Taste of Cajual mix CD mixed by friend and DJ Mark Grant. In 1998 “Pecking Peace/Lifted†was also released on Cajual Records to rave reviews in Mix Magazine & XLR8R Magazine. That year would prove to be a good year for Andre Harris: with two weekly club residencies, many guest appearances around Chicago, the Chicago Tribune naming his Friday night gig at Elixir one the “Hottest nights in the City of Chicagoâ€, and Mix Magazine naming Andre as one of the “Hardest working men in House Music.†& Julian Pena | X'ESS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $3 IMPORT DRAFTS AND $3 LEMONDROPS!!! $5 Patron shots $4 Red Stripe Bottles $4 Blue Mother F*ckers $5 ALL NIGHT WITH RSVP RSVP HERE: http://www.xessentertainment.com/house/list/list.php?eventID=60217 CACTUS 404 south wells chicago, il 60607 21+ ID Required 9PM - 2AM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Saturday, February 18th, 2006 X'ESS ENTERTAINMENT and SMART CLUBBER PRESENT.... A D.J. for over 12 years, Josh blends a unique style of funky house, tech-house and breaks, while incorporating ill-scratching and turntable tricks. Josh's passion for the art of DJing first came about when he discovered hip-hop while still in grade school. A fan of early pioneering hip-hop groups like Public Enemy, EPMD, Eric B. and Rakim, he was enthralled by the art of scratching. One day a friend lent Josh a videotape of a D.J. battle which unknowingly turned out to be a D.M.C. battle, the most renowned D.J. battle in the world. Mesmerized by what he saw could be done with 2 turntables and a mixer, Josh practiced and honed his skills relentlessly. His passion and persistence proved to be worthwhile, as he has since displayed his skills in some of the most prestigious D.J. battles in the world. 1997 saw Josh become a D.M.C Midwest Finalist. In 1999 he competed in the Winter Music Conference scratching competition where he was a runner up to 3-time world champion D.J. Craze. In 2000 Josh took 1st place in the beat-mixing competition at the Winter Music Conference D.J. spin-off. Aside from competing, Josh's passion for music has led him to compile several mix compilations including his own "House Funktion" series, which showcases his diverse music selection and wicked turntable skills. Josh has also helped co-produce legendary D.J. BadBoyBill's "Bangin the Box Vol. 4" and "Banging in London" mix compilations. As if his DJing accomplishments weren't enough, Josh has also had his hand in the studio producing tracks for the infamous Chicago labels I.H.R, Kid Dynamite, and Strictly Hype Recordings. His tracks have been featured on mix compilations and D.J. play lists throughout the world, further establishing his reputation as a D.J./Producer. Josh has also lent a hand in remixing Chicago's number one house diva, Dajae. Her first single on Kid Dynamite records entitled "Time" is an uplifting vocal anthem that has received Billboard attention and has since been licensed to Credence records in the U.K. Most Recently Josh has remixed Dajae's newest single "Everyday," also on Kid Dynamite records and already licensed to Defected Records U.K. However, "The Funky 1" is not one to be content with only producing records for other labels. In 2001, "The Funky 1" will present his own record label, Funktion Recordings. The first release "Everybody Everywhere" by BSJ and Fun-K is sure to find its way into the record boxes of D.J.'s worldwide. In the beginning, Ashish grabbed any opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, and many of his early experiences came in the form of private parties, family gatherings, etc. It wasn't until 1995 that this talented "bedroom" jock was given the chance to prove himself. Venus Nightclub, in Schaumburg, IL, decided to put their stock in Ashish, and since then, he has been rocking the spot ever since. While attending the college of DuPage and DePaul University in Chicago, Ashish Shah was exposed to many new and talented artists that would help shape his musical style that we have come to expect from Mr. Shah. Since his debut gig at Venus, Ashish Shah has managed to secure slots with some of the most well known, and influential DJ's in the realm of Electronica. These artists include such artists as Paul Van Dyk (The Riv 2 times & Transit Nightclub - Chicago), Paul Oakenfold (Vision - Chicago), Boy George ( Zentra - Chicago), Jerry Bonham (Texture - Austin, TX), Deep Dish (Transit - Chicago), and many more. In addition to his prolific Dj'ing career, Ashish is a well-versed entrepreneur. As one of two co-owners of Cellar Restaurant & Lounge in Chicago in 2001, Ashish has been learning and growing his business knowledge in order to take things to the next level. X'ESS Entertainment, one of the premier promotional companies in Chicago, is owned by Ashish and partner Jon Huang as well, and he has managed to propel X'ESS (www.xessentertainment.com) into the elite tier of predominantly house oriented promotional companies in a little over one year's time, a truly remarkable task in such a musically oriented city!
