The Club World Awards - also known as the "disco globes" after their mirrorball trophies - are meant to honor excellence in the nightlife industry. They were launched last year as part of The Club Show, the country's first trade show for nightlife professionals, and the official show of industry-favorite magazine Club Systems International. It includes an extensive exhibit hall, a full schedule of in-depth panel discussions, and six high-concept evening events. This year's awards will be handed out in a private ceremony on February 4, 2004 in Las Vegas, during the two-day Show. An independent panel of qualified judges (which will be revealed in

    mid-December) determines the winners.

An independent panel of qualified judges (which will be revealed in

    mid-December) determines the winners.

shut the music down at Twilo because women were in that room I was the sound tech at Twilo and for Junior trust me this NEVER happened infact he never threw fits at Twilo and shut the music off in the middle of his set & I worked Twilo for 6 years and never ever missed a weekend untill i stopped working there.

as far as what happened at Factory, This is exactly what new york needs rt now, everyone benifits we get a new party jonathan gets freedom he did not have to do diff things and the club gets a change. That party lasted a long time with JP and RG prob wanted to change the room up and do something diff so the club can go on with a fresh feel. Things evolve and always change in this buisness nothing stays the same so I would say this will be refreshing and junior will turn it but JP will find a home dont worry about that and his fans will get a fresh space as well so everyone wins

    November 2003 is Stereo's 5th anniversary month!

Even 5 years after it opened, Stereo is still the best club I have ever partied at, hands down. It is absolutely amazing and it should be, considering it was voted #5 of the top 10 clubs in the world by Muzik magazine in October, 1999. It was the only North American club on the list. Since then it has been praised in countless publications. Sander Kleinenberg called his August 2002 gig at the club his best night out of that year. Victor Calderone and Satoshi Tomiie have both openly praised the club on their websites and in various magazines.

I have been to Stereo countless times, probably in the realm of 90 to 100 times in the past 5 years. That's a lot of late nights, but this club is that good. I know people who have tatooed themselves with the logo of the club, they love it so much. It is addictive, and it *is* a cult. The people who go become like a family, regardless of whether or not we actually know each other, and the dancefloor is our living room.

Originally, Stereo was modeled after the seminal New York club, the Paradise Garage, but in December of 2002 the club underwent a major renovation. If you haven't been to the club lately then you will find upon your return that things have changed greatly. The DJ booth is now in a very central location, placed in a raised area set against one wall of the club. The dancefloor curves around the booth in a rough horse shoe shape. The two ends of the horse shoe are raised and have seating and water bars set against their walls. Vegetation in the form of broad leaves and ferns has been placed around the club to add an exotic touch. The dug out theatre space of this one-time cinema still acts as the dancefloor and the ceilings still soar into the heavens. Stereo's key lighting fixture, its gorgeous 5 foot wide mirror ball, still reigns supreme over the dancefloor and an enourmous broken glass Stereo logo adorns the far wall of the club.

The VIP lounge is now a small area behind the DJ booth and the downstairs lounge still remains a comfortable place to sit and relax or chat with new friends. There are several bars throughout the club, however, no alcohol is served.

The lighting system was given an update during the renovation as well. Gone are the circular trusses with millions of pin spots attached to them. The strobes have also been removed and more intelligent, swivelling fixtures have been added. Still, the effects that the night's lighting technician creates with the high powered beams at his disposal are better than I've seen at just about any other club or rave. What makes it so special is the symmetry with which the lighting patterns are executed. They are far from being messy as at many other venues; they are very well coordinated and great for creating that other-dimensional dancefloor experience, all without making you fall over.

Although it was already at the top of its game, the sound system has has recently been given a series of upgrades by Twilo's former sound tech, Shorty. It is by far the best I've heard. This system is recognized as being the world's #1 rated analog sound system. It is a six point job, each of the 6 speaker stacks standing 13.5 feet tall. It is possible to actually crawl inside the speakers if you so choose. The sound is so clear and crisp that upon walking out of the club after 8 or more hours inside there's no ringing in your ears. And inside it is undoubtedly loud. You can actually carry on a conversation right in front of the speaker stacks, too, as the sound is so clear.

The man behind Stereo's creation is the famed international DJ superstar Angel Moraes. He custom built the sound system himself, making it truly a sound setup created by DJs and for DJs. Built strictly from analog components and utilizing such classic pieces of gear as the Urei mixer, any hardware enthusiast knows that this beast of a sound system has some massive dancefloor wrecking power, especially within the realm of house music. Since Shorty came into the foray and began improving the system it has only gotten better, but Stereo would not be where it is today without Angel's influence and he can still be found playing at the club from time to time alongside other international guests.

Stereo's crowd is a wild mix of all sorts of night life creatures. There are few places you can find in Montreal (or anywhere, for that matter) that offer as diverse a crowd as does Stereo. Expect drag queens, club kids, fashionistas, ravers, students and many more styles to be on display. They come of all backgrounds, of all races, of all ages and of all sexualities. Saturdays tend to be more gay-oriented and Fridays more hetereosexual, but both nights are truly wonderful and attract a broad spectrum of afterhours culture- indeed, no one of any sexual orientation would feel out of place at either night. No one will be turned away from Stereo for the way they look and there is never a dress code.

The music policy on Friday nights has gone through some major changes in the past couple years, but now things are pretty much set: Friday nights at Stereo are all about progressive house. Big names from around the globe pass through the room on Friday, with Satoshi Tomiie being a bimonthly resident. Sander Kleinenberg is another Stereo favourite that stops by at least twice a year.

Saturdays are what they have always been and the Saturday night music policy is likewise unchanged. Always house music, and often on the NYC tip: circuit house, tribal house, vocal/diva house, progressive house. Sometimes classic, soulful and funky house is played as well. Monthly Saturday night resident DJs include Alain Vinet, David Morales, and Victor Calderone.

Come check it out. You'll be impressed. (Opens at 2AM Friday and Saturday night, $20 - $35 CAD)
