  2. Biography: Kenneth Thomas has quickly positioned himself as not only one of the top DJs in Detroit he is now becoming one of the most sought after DJs in America. Over the last few years Kt has gone from the headlining resident position on Saturday nights at Motor Detroit (voted number one club in America by URB Magazine, 2001) to headlining numerous events in Miami, Texas, New York, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and even Toronto's System Sound Bar & The Guvernment. Kenneth has now moved away from local residencies, except his long running monthly residencies with picturethisdetroit.com and Bleu, and has truly began to establish himself as a national headliner. With a regular touring schedule in the US and beyond, Kt has now found time to express himself beyond DJing, by bringing his passion for music into the studio. In 2004, working alongside Mike Targanski (Elevation of Markus Schulz presents Elevation- Clear Blue) led to a new series of productions spearheaded by their first release, Elevation & Kenneth Thomas- “Preen†signed to Armin van Buuren’s Armada sub label, Electronic Elements. “Preen†received praise & play from Paul Oakenfold, Nick Warren, D:Fuse and quickly become a favorite on Markus Schulz’s Global DJ Broadcast. Their second release Varekai has already received heavy play from the likes of Jon O'bir, ATB and Matt Hardwick and was voted Fan Favorite on Above & Beyond’s radio show Trance Around the World. In late 2005 Varekai also reached #2 on the well respected Dutch Dance Charts out of Holland. The summer of 2005 found Kt releasing his first solo productions spearheaded by the track “Tonic†which was picked up by Markus Schulz’s Coldharbour Recordings. Most recently Kt has done remix duties for Oakenfold and Jan Johnston and will soon see the release of his progressive house track, The Orange Room, on Hope Recordings. The Orange Room has already received heavy play from the likes of Steve Lawler, Nick Warren and Hernan Cattaneo. Hernan went as far as playing it regularly on his heavily followed radio show Metro 95.1. Although busy in the studio, Kt still considers DJing his first love. He programs his set on the fly at every show to match his interpretation of each club and crowd he plays for. His sets can often run the gamut from House and Progressive to Breaks and techno and of course Trance. Kenneth’s immaculate attention to detail and his tireless work-ethic have brought him to the attention of many in the industry, including Paul Oakenfold who has recently tapped Kt to join him on a number of upcoming North American shows. With his commitment and passion for the music, only time will show how far Kt will go. "This is the most amazing sound I have ever encountered, I just want to share it with as many people as possible"-KT

  4. Biography International DJ and producer Paul van Dyk was voted “America’s Favorite DJ†for 2004 by BPM Magazine and was the big winner at the 2004 Dancestar Awards, taking home 3 awards: Best International DJ, Best Event and Best Music in a Commercial (Motorola). He also won the Mexican Oscar for his soundtrack in the film Zurdo in March 2004. Paul partnered with the “Rock the Vote†campaign in order to encourage America’s youth to exercise their right to vote in the 2004 presidential election. Paul’s involvement marked the first time an electronic artist became involved in the campaign and he joined other artists such as Bono, Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz and the Black Eyed Peas. Previously, Paul was voted "Best Music Maker" by DJ magazine, ahead of DJ legends Fatboy Slim (2) and Paul Oakenfold (3). He then went on to receive the “Best International DJ Award†at the 1999 Music Awards in London. Ministry of Sound Magazine named him the "Best international DJ", and his regular 6 hour set at “Gatecrasher†was voted as the "second best club night ever" by the readers of the English magazine Muzik. In 1999, Mixmag elected him as “Man of the Year†and Muzik Magazine named him “Leader of the Trance Nation.†Born in Eisenhuettenstadt, East Germany, Paul grew up in communist East Berlin. Prior to Germany’s reunification, he had an early window to the capitalist world via the cross-border airwaves. Because his community did not have a true club culture, Paul listened to the radio where he discovered the music of artists such as The Smiths and New Order. Then in 1989, after the wall finally came down, a broad club culture sprung up throughout all of Berlin and although Techno music emerged, Paul was looking for a different, more unique sound. That search would never leave him. Stemming from two crusty old turntables, the first remix tapes of his musical ideas were created. And in March 1991, his unique style of dance music was played for the very first time to the public at the embryonic Berlin club "Tresor". Around this same period, Paul also started writing his own original compositions. His first production "Perfect Day", produced together with Cosmic Baby as "Visions of Shiva", was released in 1992. In 1993, Paul created the club hit of the year with his remix of Humate’s "Love Stimulation". The following year, his first album 45 RPM was recorded, while he was also regularly spinning sets at the legendary Berlin club "E–Werk". Over the next few years Paul garnered further respect by remixing tracks of many renowned artists such as Inspiral Carpets, Sven Väth, Curve and New Order. This was of course until the release of his second album, Seven Ways, which firmly established him as one of the world’s truly great electronic artists. Seven Ways unleashed a frenzy of national and international interviews, and Paul was catapulted into the Top 100. Even the English music media, typically protective of their own homespun DJ artists, unanimously praised the record. Readers of DJ Magazine – voted Seven Ways as the Number 1 album of the year. Bellowing singles such as "Beautiful Place", "Forbidden Fruit" and "Words", featuring remixes of Salt Tank, Quattara and Curve, fully secured him a place as a major player in the British and European dancecharts. Before the club closed, Paul became an institution at Berlin’s “E–Werkâ€, regularly spinning new musical magic, with guest appearances by fellow superstar DJs Nick Warren, BT, Dave Seaman and Sasha. In 1998 his first album 45 RPM was released in the UK, and the new remix of the single "For an Angel" attacked dance floors worldwide. The album buzzed for two weeks at number 1 in England and four weeks at number 1 in the German dance charts, and also achieved high positions in the American, Australian, Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian dance charts. Paul then became a resident DJ at New York’s legendary dance club “Twilo†and also at the acclaimed “Gatecrasher†in Sheffield. In 1999 Paul, together with his team, created the new label Vandit Records. This label presents both Paul’s releases, as well as other new and innovative dance/DJ artists. In England, Deviant Records took care of Paul’s creative output, whose brainstorm was the 1998 Triple CD "Vorsprung Dyk Technik". Combining 33 tracks, it is the most exhaustive collection of Paul’s remixes to date, containing classics like Humate’s "Love Stimulation" and Joe T. Vanelli ‘s "Playing with the Voice in Germany" as well as Binary Finary’s clubhit "1998" and Paul’s own chart single "For an Angel". A year after its release in Nov 1999, "Vorsprung Dyk Technik" was officially declared "Silver" with over 60,000 sales in the UK, a very rare feat indeed for a Triple CD. By the time Paul released "Out There & Back" in 2000, it became clear that the Berlin-based musician had far more to offer than his signature club sets and remixes that had already defined him as one of the most influential German DJs and producers of all time. His first compilation mix CD Politics of Dancing was released in 2001, followed by Global in 2003 – an original CD/DVD which illustrates his own experiences traveling the world. Paul’s last album Reflections illustrates little stories told by life and was released last year. The magic of the album’s thirteen tracks is based on each song’s potential to extravagate and blow away clichés – and still be unbelievably multi-faceted. The first release from Reflections was the hit single “Nothing But You†with its yearning Norwegian vocals and the impassionate lyric line “I have nothing but I have got everything when I have got you†and quickly made its way onto mainstream radio stations worldwide. The follow up single, “Time Of Our Livesâ€, is the result of Paul’s first collaboration with the rock band Vega 4 and was the first “live in concert†track Paul presented at his record release tour. “Time of Our Lives†reached the first position in German and English dance charts. Shortly after the album’s third single “Crush†was released, Paul collaborated with Peter Heppner, singer of the band Wolfsheim, which resulted in the hit single “Wir sind Wir†(translation: This is Us). Both artists were inspired by the German TV documentary “Das Wunder von Bernâ€. The song illustrates the spirit and history of Germany and although lots of Germans in east and west lost their self-esteem, they are united and unafraid of what the future may bring. Today, Paul’s touring diary is incredibly hectic with regular globetrotting stops at major venues in London, Tel Aviv, Mexico, New York and Singapore. Between all that, Berlin is always there and waiting -- if not for the interviews and local club dates, then for looking after his own label Vandit, recording studio and his radio show Soundgarden which airs every Wednesday 2pm – 4pm (EST) on Fritz radio and over the internet (www.fritz.de).
  5. ABOUT PAOLO MOJO There are DJs and then there are DJs. You know what that means. People who rise above the simple act of playing records to create something magical. People who are born to play to a crowd, to heighten the senses and inspire reaction and emotion in both clubbers and their peers. People that create a palpable sense of anticipation when they take to the decks because the crowd know they are in for a ride. People that balance the atmosphere on a knife edge.. and then drop you off, pull you back up and throw your senses to all points of the emotional compass. Paolo Mojo is one of those DJs. Paolo's sets are rooted in a love of house music, deep, warm or weird techy house with a strong breaks influence. Putting a label on Paolo is hard, and he prefers it that way - his hallmark is breathtakingly smooth, skillful and often rapid transitions between a wide variety of genres in any given set. "I couldn't stick to one genre" Paolo explains. "I want to enjoy what I hear as much as the crowd, so I need to keep myself entertained. Plus a lot of DJs get stuck in the rut on playing a sound that works and before they know it, they've been left behind. You've always got to keep seeking out those edgy records, push yourself and take risks with your music." This refreshing lack of bollocks combined with a widely acclaimed flair behind the decks has brought Paolo to the ears and attention of the world in a short space of time. From triumphant sets with Tyrant @ Fabric alongside Craig Richards and Lee Burridge, who has regularly championed Paolo's sound, to wowing the crowds in New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Moscow, to countless gigs in his native UK for the likes of Bedrock, Colours, Tribal Sessions and Space... he's risen far and fast. In the past 18 months Paolo he has played at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Zouk (Singapore) Fabric (London), Bedrock (London) Pacha (Ibiza), Arc (New York) Maze (Miami), TeXound (Taiwan), Decedance (Greece) and TLV (Tel Aviv). He has toured Asia for DJ Magazine with Tom 'Superchumbo' Stephan and has held a monthly residency in Ireland for Inertia where six-hour sets earned him a fanatically loyal following. In 2002 he embarked on a short residency in London with Gatecrasher, successfully showcasing a deeper alternative tech / house sound to the Crasher crowd when hosting the entermusic room at Heaven. The room played host to the likes of Medicine8 and 16b and was a roaring success. He has appeared regularly (5 times) at John Digweed's Bedrock nights in London and Brighton and also holds the rare honour of being the only non resident DJ to warm up the main room last year (with Xpress2). He has guested on John Digweed's Kiss FM radio show, again to huge acclaim. His monthly Music Is Freedom radio show on Groovetech.com, established due to popular demand after a number of widely praised guest appearances, is feted the world over for his distinctive, clever, style involving effects, edits and acapellas and occasional high quality guest appearance. His ear for a tune encouraged him to set up and run firstly Entermusic and now Music Is Freedom - which is rapidly establishing itself as a respected underground house label. Music Is Freedom is developing a broad based eclectic release schedule featuring artists such as Dino Lenny, Simon Rogers, Smight, Koo and Paolo himself that has earned praise from a host of DJs including Craig Richards, Sasha and Deep Dish. Paolo exploded on to the international scene in 2001 to unprecedented acclaim with the release of his promo CD mix, Music Is Freedom. Highlights included winning Muzik Magazine's Bedroom Bedlam competition (and a subsequent nomination for 'Best Bedlam DJ' at their annual awards) and being chosen as the winner of Rapture TV's Homelands Contest, which awarded Paolo with a 90 minute set in the Back2Basics arena at Homelands that year. Paolo also received personal messages of congratulations from Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox and Lee Burridge for the mix. Music is Freedom took advantage of the huge growth in Internet popularity to become something of an underground phenomenon, with global message boards talking about the mix for months on end, establishing huge underground and Internet based support for Paolo and establishing without a doubt - a new benchmark for DJ demo cds. The impact of this cd has inspired two subsequent equally well received mixes and the record label, live parties and radio show of the same name. "There are no rules" says Paolo "Music Is Freedom just nicely sums up what I feel about music" Other work has taken him to 25 countries across the world including South America twice (including an acclaimed NYE 2002 gig in Argentina), Russia, the Netherlands, Scotland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Turkey. On the home front, he has delivered memorable sets at amongst others, Fabric, The Cross, The Gallery at Turnmills and even a special party for Lee Burridge and Boxed who asked Paolo to play at the launch party for Lee's Nu-Breed compilation. Paolo is currently working on original productions and remixes as Paolo Mojo fro the Music Is Freedom label and also with acclaimed producer Simon Rogers in London, the results of which should surface later in 2003. He has recently remixed Dino Lenny's classic tech house track 'Acid Caracas', and will be releasing 'Back in The Day' (under his Parade breaks alter ego) on Cass' Sabotage Systems label later in 2003.
  6. ABOUT DUBFIRE So you think you know all about Deep Dish? Think again... Dubfire (aka Ali Shirazinia)--one half of the Grammy Award winning and four-time nominated electronic music duo Deep Dish--has joined forces with Global Underground for the April 10 release of his first solo mix album Dubfire GU31 – Taipei. The 2-CD mix set is a sweeping change from anything you would have previously expected to hear from the Deep Dish member and it features the finest in house, electro, techno, and even industrial music. Growing up in the Washington, DC area, Dubfire spent much of his youth playing the guitar in school bands and listening to heavy doses of classic Hip-Hop, jazz/rare groove, dub reggae, new wave and industrial. Dubfire was also influenced by the local punk scene and the music of hometown bands like Fugazi and Minor Threat. Members of these bands also worked at a local record store called Yesterday And Today Records, and this is where Dubfire first picked up on the sounds of acts such as Kraftwerk, Ministry, Jesus & Mary Chain, Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb, Adrian Sherwood/On-U Sound and Einsturzende Neubauten. Through this heavy industrial influence, namely the sound of Chicago’s famed Wax Trax! label, Dubfire discovered the Chicago house scene and what labels like Trax and D.J. International Records were releasing. Dubfire’s eclectic new mix is the product of his diverse past and addictive music personality, and this mix is more about Dubfire personally and as a DJ. Dubfire’s mix was compiled with tracks that he’s both really into at the moment and that have also had a profound influence on shaping his love for music. Dubfire GU31 – Taipei is laced full of gems from a diverse lot including Depeche Mode, Carl Craig, Booka Shade, Extrawelt, Samuel L Session and Nitzer Ebb. However, the biggest surprise of all comes with Dubfire’s original production “I Feel Speed;†a cover of an obscure Love & Rockets song that, for the first time, features his own vocals! Dubfire GU31 – Taipei is released April 10 on Global Underground. Keep an eye out for April/May tour dates and several major events at the Winter Music Conference in March. Deep Dish’s previous releases for Global Underground include GU-025: Toronto (2003), Deep Dish - Global Underground 021: Moscow (2001) and Sharam GU29 – Dubai (2006). 9. The Uncommon Cool of DJ Icey By Amy Hubbarth Dec 13, 2006, 23:00 Email this article Printer friendly page So how in the heck would someone from Florida, home of sandy beaches and half-naked women, choose a DJ name that pretty much means the complete opposite? “When I was 18, we were all avid surfers and would get up very early to hit the beach for dawn patrol. When I would go to bed I would turn the AC in our apartment down to 55 degrees and it would be freezing in the morning, [my roommates] started calling me ‘Icey’ and that is how I got my name.†His name was first spelled Icee, until the makers of a frozen drink-treat so kindly asked him to change it. This Orlando native is one of the hardest working DJs in the biz, playing about a hundred gigs a year. He got his start back in the early-'90s, landing a residency at the legendary Edge club. After the club closed, he took to constant touring, putting breakbeat on the map, created a long discography, including a claim as the first American DJ to record a notable Essential Mix and started two record labels, Tree and Zone Recordings. He’s used to playing a crowded dancefloor and you’ll see everyone from the breakdancers to the club kids soaking up the intense energy that Icey brings to rock out every gig. The “King of Funky Breaks†took a minute from his busy schedule to answer some Real D inquiries. Real Detroit: What’s up? How was your holiday? DJ Icey: Thanksgiving was hectic, as I played a show in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, flew home, ate turkey and then flew up to the Panhandle for a show on Friday in Pensacola. But at least I got my turkey in! RD: Any plans for new studio work from you? DJ Icey: I am currently in the studio recording tracks for my next mix CD coming out on March 6 called Disco Rodeo. It drops on the Moist Music label out of NYC that is home to DJ Irene and George Acosta, so I will be their first breaks CD release. RD: What’s the hot record in your bag right now? DJ Icey: Keith Mac Allstars, some new Stanton Warriors tunes! RD: What is it about breaks? DJ Icey: I just fell in love with the brokenbeat sound around 1990, before then there really were no boundaries or genres, DJs played all styles, I came up on Belgian New Beat and Acid House and Industrial music, and fell in love with the breakbeat sound I heard by early Frankie Bones and Omar Santana records out of NYC back in the day. RD: What brought you to this world of electronic music, in general? DJ Icey: I was always a record collector and loved electronic music from New Order and Kraftwerk on, DJing happened by accident after making mixtapes with the pause button of a old tape recorder for my surfing buddy at New Smyrna Beach Inlet back in the day. RD: What is the most rewarding thing about your career? DJ Icey: The most rewarding thing is I can actually make music as a producer and spin music as a DJ for a living, as I am a 100 percent music lover manic. RD: You do a lot of touring. How do you keep yourself sane? DJ Icey: Well you get used to being on the road and your body anticipates the travel, I have been on the road every weekend pretty much for the last eight years! I try to eat well and take my vitamins and drink my pomegranate juice! | RDW DJ Icey • December 15 • Bleu Room Experience

  11. About FaarsheedStated by Neil Moffit (Godskitchen, Inc.) as “the DJ to look out for,†Faarsheed has proven to be a solid fixture in the dance music world. He has been playing alongside the biggest and best dj’s from across the globe for years. He began playing major events with Spundae, Las Vegas in 2001, and from there, he has worked his way up to become part of the prestigious Godskitchen/Ice family and a permanent fixture as a Godskitchen/Ice resident in Las Vegas. His style is definitely unique & hard to pinpoint or label, but Faarsheed brings his blend of deep, sexy, twisted, bangin, baseline driven tribal, progressive, & electro beats to every set. His acute ear for a tune, rigorous work ethic, programming skills, crowd recognition, and a technical ability that is second to none, have led him through a consistent climb approaching new levels in his career. If you have seen him live recently, you already know that he uses a minimum of 3 decks (usually 4), along with the pioneer efx1000 effects processor, & some looping to give his sets a unique edge crafting live on the fly remixes for the crowd. Playing a big role at the legendary Godskitchen & ICE parties has quickly made Faarsheed into a familiar name around the globe. He has repeatedly rocked crowds from all over the world, whether it be playing his memorable headlining sets, or playing along side the world's most talented artists: Steve Lawler, Deep Dish, John Digweed, Sasha, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Ferry Corsten, Erick Morillo, Max Graham, Roger Sanchez & many more. Almost every headlining dj that comes through Las Vegas requests Faarsheed’s presence behind the decks as the opener. With many years of experience behind his belt at a young age, Faarsheed has mastered the art of being a real “opening dj†and has shown time and time again how to properly set up any dj, with any musical style. More importantly, he has gained enough experience and knowledge to emotionally, mentally, and physically move any crowd, anywhere, at any given time, as the “headlining actâ€. In 2005, Miller Brewing Company has seen the potential in this rising talent, and has signed with Faarsheed as an official sponsor. With the national air of “The Club†on Spike TV (2004-2005) with Faarsheed as the resident Dj on the show (filmed at Godskitchen/Ice_Las_Vegas), he has gained more fans from around the globe and has expanded his horizons in 2005 with original productions in the works, and a new tour schedule ready to hit North America & Eastern Europe. The tour kicked off early 2005 in various American cities as part of a publicity tour representing Ice/Godskitchen, Las Vegas and Spike TV’s “The Clubâ€. The first stop was Nikki Beach, Miami(WMC 2005) for the Radio 1 “In New Music We Trust, The USA Tour 2005†party. Faarsheed closed the night inside the Global Gathering Room (the main room) at this party…A party which headlined over 25 of the worlds most talented dj’s/producers, drew over 20,000 people, and has been repeatedly stated to be the best party of the Winter Music Conference. In 2006/2007, Faarsheed has been voted into the DjMag Top250 Dj elite in the world, and continues to make his stamp in the dance music scene with his dedication & hard work. Completeing his ICE residency (with the closing of ICE), & his afterhours residency at Late Night Empire, Faarsheed has started a promising new residency at JET Las Vegas & is consistantly touring all the big cities in North America as well countries like Mexico, Turkey, Canada, & more. With his hectic schedule, he has still managed to find some time for the studio, primarily focusing on new tracks and unique edits using ableton live…tracks that can only be heard in Faarsheed’s newer mixes and sets, for now. You can see him live, hear him on Sirius Satellite radio regularly, or even get a glimpse of what he has been up to on his new 2006 Promo DVD. And his 2 most memorable sets this year were at the WMC (2006) where Faarsheed played a peak slot, for 5 hours, on the Terrace at Nocturnal in Miami to a packed house, full of music lovers, who have been raving about his skills & energy behind the decks ever since and at the ICE closing Party where he played an emotional 12 hour set into 2pm the next day w a full dance floor of people still not wanting to leave. If you haven’t seen Faarsheed live yet, you’re missing out on a truly unique style & performance by refreshingly passionate dj

  14. Real Detroit Weekly Interview with BT BT By Nov 22, 2006, 23:57 Email this article Printer friendly page Those who see electronic pop music and trance as diametrically opposed to more ostensibly cerebral genres (IDM, glitch, etc.) have a hard time articulating their feelings about BT (Brian Transeau). He is certainly comfortable entering into the realm of pop, even composing tunes for Sting and ‘NSync, and remixing songs by Madonna and Tom Jones. He has also been called the “Father of Trance.†On the other hand, as anyone who has listened to his latest album, This Binary Universe, knows, BT is capable of composing music that is complex enough to make Schrodinger cry. He is remarkably prolific and the projects he takes on are diverse; he has even composed soundtracks for video games and films (including Monster, starring Charlize Theron). BT will be bringing his distinct, multifarious sound to Bleu on Nov. 24. Real Detroit: Your new album, This Binary Universe, seems to be much more avant-garde and forward-thinking than much of your previous work. What inspired you to move in that direction? BT: This record really represents a culmination of many years of interest and studies in a lot of different areas. There are three specifically. The first one is classical music. I studied classical music since I was a kid. I was the kid that had no social life and practiced seven-and-a-half hours a day. This is the first chance I’ve had to really utilize what I’ve studied on a record. All the pieces fall into classical music forms, albeit some more modernist ones. But most of them involve a statement of a theme, a variant of a theme and a recapitulation of a theme. The second interest of mine is in mathematics and computer software. I started a software company two years ago called Sonic Architect, and we spent two years building a drum machine called BreakTweaker; every beat on the record is done in BreakTweaker. It’s the first ever surround sound drum machine, and it’s going to come out next year. But we built it so I could do the beats that I wanted to do on this album: note figures of 2,048th and 1,024th notes that spline down into 8th note triplets exponentially over a dotted quarter note. And all of this granulation takes place in surround sound. Nothing that’s commercially available can do this yet. The final interest of mine that influenced this project is jazz. I’m interested in asymmetrical meter and things that aren’t in 4/4 time. So I wrote whole pieces in 9/4 or 7/8. Melodies will come to me in alternate signatures, and I always end up compressing them into 4/4. This is the first time I said, “I’m going to let this rhythm breathe and do its own thing.†It’s probably not going to make any sense to anybody, but it’s really meaningful to me to keep the integrity of the idea intact. RD: It’s interesting that you mention classical and jazz. Some critics lament the fact that classical and jazz no longer seem relevant to a modern audience in the same way that much electronic music is. Do you think that electronic music is supplanting more traditional forms, or is it just the next logical progression of these seminal genres? BT: That is such a good question. If you were to ask me about my five-year goal, it would be to make orchestral music cool again. I mean, how many people do you know who are 13 or 14 years old who have ever listened to live orchestral music? For those who are interested in electronic music, I think a lot of orchestral music is either too harmonically dense and challenging (i.e. atonal composers like Shostakovich or Schoenberg) or it’s too consonant and sounds like something their parents would listen to (i.e. Brahms, Bach, Beethoven). But the stuff that’s in-between is amazing. | RDW BT • November 24 • Bleu Room Experience
