  3. Here are the two of the most-frequently asked questions that I am getting through e-mail: 1. Is there a Mac version that works with Ableton? 2. How accurate are the results? We have gotten a lot of requests for the Mac OSX version. Since a great deal of people are using Macs, it makes sense to develop a Mac version. It is just a matter of time before a Mac version is released. Secondly, some people asked about the accuracy of results. I know this is a pretty sensitive subject, since the program needs credibility before it can become useful. Here's my response: Mixed In Key is highly accurate because it analyzes every user's personal collection. This works great because vinyl releases can be different from BeatPort releases. The label that pressed the vinyl could have transposed the song into a different key. This software scans your personal .MP3 and .WAV files, you will get accurate results that are personalized to your collection. This is more accurate than online databases. The 95% accuracy statement is true for my music collection. This algorithm has made my club mixing much better. Before I licensed the [tONaRT] algorithm in 2004, I was using the piano to find keys manually. After a few weeks of using [tONaRT], I switched completely to using this software. I have not experienced any obvious "out-of-key" mixes since then. Here's the quickest way to check if your results are accurate or not -- Download the free version, analyze your favorite songs, and see which ones are compatible. http://www.mixedinkey.com/downloads/Install_MixedInKey_TrialVersion.msi You can double click on results in "Browse Collection" to play them. Pick ones that are within 1 number of each other. For example, pick a song that says 7A or 7B, and then pick a song that says 8A or 8B. If two songs start to blend together seamlessly, you've just experienced a harmonic mix. Imagine how good this would sound when mixed on DJ software or DJ hardware. Please let me know if you have any questions!

  5. Dear All, A free version of Mixed In Key is now available for download. Mixed In Key is a Windows application that finds the musical key of songs for musicians and professional DJs. Mixed In Key helps users mix songs harmonically, with no clashing vocals and harmonic elements. You can download a free version here: http://www.mixedinkey.com/downloads.aspx Some supported features: Analyze all .WAV files quickly and easily Create browsable collections, drag-and-drop supported Display harmonically-compatible song combinations Read our tutorial on harmonic mixing Save your last 10 song results into your collectionTutorial #1 "Harmonic Mixing using Camelot Notation" Harmonic Mixing is a technique that I use to transition between songs while I am DJ'ing. I learned this technique from watching DJ Sasha, Armin Van Burren and Miguel Migs. Many famous DJs currently use harmonic mixing to supplement their beatmatching technique. Although harmonic mixing seems complicated at first, it is actually very simple. Harmonic mixing is a process of mixing between harmonically compatible songs. When you play the same song back-to-back, the mix will always sound pleasant because the key and the tempo are the same. When you play a Madonna vocal in D major on top of a Kylie Minogue vocal in B major, this could get a little sour. Madonna's vocal is not in the same key as Kylie Minogue. Most people can often tell when something is out of tune, especially if it's two singers. Imagine that Kylie and Madonna are recording together in the same studio. They perform a duet -- Madonna sings in a low voice and Kylie sings in a high voice, but in the same key, perhaps D major. Both artists sound great together. So why don't duets like these work in a club, but succeed in the music studio? In Western music, there are only 24 possible keys. In the first instance, the two keys, D major and B major, do not mix harmonically. In the studio scenario the two vocals in the duet complement each other because they are in the same key. By knowing the key of the song, you can mix it harmonically with other songs once you understand Camelot Notation. Camelot Notation tells you which keys will result in harmonic mixes. Using Mixed in Key, you can find the key of each song and translate it to the corresponding Camelot code. With Madonna and Kylie studio duet in D major, the corresponding code would be 10B. But how do you know which mixes are harmonic? Let's stay with our Madonna and Kylie studio duet in 10B. This key is harmonically compatible with the same key, 10B, the key above it, 11B, and the key below, 9B. Look at the chart like a watch and compare the keys to hours. Harmonically compatible mixes are only at the same hour, one hour ahead, and one hour behind. If you changed the studio duet to match Kylie's original B major vocal, it would become 1B. This would mix harmonically with 12B, 1B and 2B. Using this method does not require you to stay in the same key for the entire night. Movement around the Camelot circle can be done one step at a time. You can also move between the inner and outer circle, as long as you stay in the same digit or hour. For example, 2A and 2B are harmonically compatible. You can mix between 2A and 2B and start moving along the outer circle. Your next mix can move back down to 2A, remain in 2B, or move to either 1B or 3B. This traversal of the circle makes every mix harmonic. You can play songs in different keys, find harmonically matching acapellas and remain 100% in key. Mixed In Key supports the Camelot Notation. It can detect the exact key of every .MP3 and .WAV song. Writing these Camelot key next to your CD sleeves or vinyl sleeves can tell you quickly which songs go well together. Please let me know if you have any questions. Take care, Yakov
  6. Dear All, Here are some questions from the forums: 1. What does Mixed In Key do if, say a track ends up halfway between a and b flat, does it "snap" it to the nearest key? Mixed In Key works by finding the most common key in a song. For example, if 80% of the song is A-minor and 20% is C-major (relative major key), Mixed In Key will report the overall key as A-minor. However, if you were asking about what happens when the song is out-of-key, I have a different answer for you. For example, if the song is between A and B-Flat, Mixed In Key will say that the song is out-of-key. The algorithm does this now, but we're going through some growing pains and this information not yet shown in the results panel. However, you can see that this feature exists by looking at the XML file. This file can be viewed with Internet Explorer or Notepad. We've had several requests for this feature and it will be added in a future update. Mixed In Key can automatically detect when a new version is available and update the software (while keeping your existing Key Collection intact). In fact, if you ever choose to uninstall this software, you will not lose your Key Collection. 2. Could you just queue loads of files and analyze them all at once? Yes, this was the main purpose of the application. You can add as many WAV and MP3 files as you like. You can also queue entire Folders with one click. For example, I selected my C:\Music\ folder at lunchtime and came back two hours later. Mixed In Key processed 600 songs in various subfolders (I usually organize my collection by time of purchase and key) 3. What if a tune changes key halfway through the song? Does Mixed In Key give you the keys throughout the duration of the tune? Mixed In Key can detect the best key for different parts of the song. For example, my personal favorite is 3 parts -- Beginning, Middle and End of the song. This really helps me with scenarios where the key changes after the break. However, the default installation is configured to analyze the entire song and display one key. We can easily change this in a free update, we're currently working on the best way to display N-number of keys for every song. Our application design is very clean, and we like to keep it that way. There is no need for clutter -- Mixed In Key does one job, and it does it very well. If you have any questions about Mixed In Key, please e-mail contact@mixedinkey.com
  7. Dear Friends, I have great news! My pet project, "Mixed In Key", has finally gone live! This project is unlike anything else available in the World today. What is it, you ask? Mixed In Key is a Windowsâ„¢ application that finds the musical key of songs for musicians and professional DJs. Mixed In Key helps users mix songs harmonically, with no clashing vocals and harmonic elements. With Mixed In Key, various songs and genres blend together seamlessly. The only way to use this technique before was to sit down with a piano, and manually key your entire music collection. Now, "Mixed In Key" is available for instant download, and can key hundreds of songs automatically. This technique is currently used by DJ Sasha, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk and many more! Here are some real-world examples of what Mixed In Key can come up with: 1. Mylo "Drop The Pressure" vs. The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army" vs. Kelly Clarkson "Since U Been Gone" (130 BPM) 2. Junior Jack "E-Samba" vs. Eric Prydz "Call On Me" (126 BPM) 3. Kevin Lyttle "Turn Me On" vs. Madonna "La Isla Bonita" (109 BPM) 3. Sasha "Xpander" vs. Madonna "Hung Up" vs. The Similou "All This Love" (127 BPM) Harmonic mixing doesn't work by itself, it still requires the DJ to beat match and read the crowd. However, it does allow the DJ to come up with some really creative and unique song combinations. This has been my pride and joy for 5 years. I heard about this technique when I went to see DJ Sasha and he illustrated that this is SIMPLY THE BEST WAY to sound amazing in a club. I hope to pass on this knowledge onto a new generation of DJs and improve club nights everywhere. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard Madonna and Kylie Minogue getting completely destroyed by mixing the two of them together without paying any attention to the harmonic elements. I hope that this program can eliminate some of that. Every DJ and musician could benefit from using this technique. Trance and House Music both have a lot of melody, so mixing in key is a perfect fit. Here is a screenshot: Mixed In Key Website Link: http://www.MixedInKey.com Also, check out the Mixed In Key Blog: http://MixedInKey.Typepad.com -------------- FAQ -------------- How much does Mixed In Key cost? Mixed In Key costs $58 (US). You can purchase it directly from http://www.mixedinkey.com Your private download link will be sent to your e-mail account right away. What are the system requirements? Windows XP, Windows 2000 or 2003 and a collection of .MP3 or .WAV files. Mixed In Key uses Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework. We will provide it free with your installation. Why is Mixed In Key so inexpensive? Different business model. We offer a superior product with a great algorithm, and we want people to know about it! We understand that more people will experience harmonic mixing if we offer this program at a one-time low price. Our business model is based on low price, and hopefully, high volume. Thank you for your interest! DJ Yakov (Founder of Mixed In Key)
