James Amato’s business-savvy approach to the music industry has kept him balancing roles of promoter, record label owner, and Dj for more than a decade. From hosting his first one-off event in 1999 to securing his position as Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s historically SmartBar since 2006, James has become one of the most widely recognized names on the national & electronic music scene. In 2007 James established his industry presence further, launching his widely successful fidget/electo/tech house label, Potty Mouth Music, which has earned him notoriety worldwide.

James launched his music career in his native city of Milwaukee WI, where he climbed through the promotional ranks of the local and Midwest rave scene in the 1990s. After working at pioneering electronic music venues—including Revolutions Records and Bassment with promoter and mentor Steven Kaye -James invested back in 2004 into the industry by becoming co-owner and director of music and bookings at Milwaukee’s Mantra Lounge. Here he launched Kamasutra, a legendary Friday event that ran for three years. The consistent success of Kamasutra put the city’s club scene on the national radar, as it garnered press attention from publications including URB and earned James a front-page cover story in Nightclub/Bar Magazine. His success also earned him runner-up for the “Best Promoter†in the U.S. by URB magazine.

In September 2006, James relocated to Chicago to become the new Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s SmartBar, a historic venue with a 25-year tradition of showcasing electronic talent. Under the guidance of owner Joe Shanahan James broaden his scope as a promoter and bookings director, debuting innovative artists to Chicago, including Switch, Alan Braxe, Digitalism, Crookers, Erol Alkan and Claude Vonstroke.

In 2008, Club Systems Int. recognized his efforts to diversify and promote Chicago’s electronic music scene by selecting him as one of its “Next 10 Exciting Up-and-Comers†as part of its annual VIP Edition—“Nightlife’s 30 Most Influential People.†Additionally, James has received critical Chicago fanfare in 2007, when he was named part of NewCity magazine’s “45 Most Influential People That Rock Chicago!â€

James’ promotional rise on the underground electronic scene led to his creation of two widely success digital/vinyl labels, including his 2007 venture, Potty Mouth Music, which showcases a diverse roster of fidget and tech house producers. With artists including: Santiago & Bushido, Crookers, HiJack and the Mightyfools, Potty Mouth Music has established itself as an innovative label embracing the newer dirty-quirky union of electro, house, techno and crunk releasing over 30+ Eps.

In October 2009 James relocated to Los Angeles, CA where he continues to push the industry envelope in balancing his career as a promoter, label-owner, dj and producer. His dedication in the studio and in the club continues to the industry standard of the international electronic music scene.

MATTHEW GARTON (South Africa) Potty Mouth Music

    www.myspace.com/matthewgarton13

Matthew Garton Shakes up Potty Mouth Sound with “Soul for Rent EPâ€

House, tech and funk drive five-track EP, with remix by Geoff K

From quirky vocal overlays to bouncy basslines, his music reflects his style both in the studio and on the decks. This time Garton is shaking up the sound of Los-Angeles based Potty Mouth Music, putting an eclectic stamp of house, tech and funk into one five-track package. “Soul for Rent EP†(PMM032) not only marks the producer’s PMM debut, but also brings another new vibe to an already multi-dimensional roster of sound.

With the new vibe comes the new PMM talent of Matthew Garton. Born in Brighton, England and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Garton is widely known within the underground house community as one half of DJ/production duo Rotation Station (with partner Roger Aquino). While house forms the backbone of his sound, his influences range widely from jazz and Latin to funky house and filtered disco. Pops of tech, electro and progressive all help define much of his production catalogue in the past five years, which has landed on the label likes of Buzz Cut, Junky Trunk and Destination, to name a few.

“This EP represents all the styles of house that I love,†Garton says of his PMM debut. “It almost feels like I’ve drawn on influences from the past and then reworked them into more current interpretations.â€

The EP’s title track “Soul for Rent†melds funk, stark synths and distorted vocals into one bounce-driven groove. South African electro house producer Geoff K speeds up the tempo for his remix, padding the bass while taking the track to a deeper, fuller place.

Adding to the EP is “Candy Whacked,†a dirty tech fueled groove with all the peaks and valleys of a 2 a.m. banger. “Pretty Surprise†brings Garton’s quirky house influences to forefront, with help from a funky bass guitar and cheeky vocals by Bladwin Blaq. “One Love†rounds out the EP with its startling mix of synth driven sounds the build into a dreamy, soulful breakdown. Swing jazz drums and tick-tock bass pumps create stand out noise for the equally stand out track.

Look for his Garton’s influences of Fat Boy Slim, The Greenskeepers, Switch, Basement Jaxx, Frank Sinatra and Noze to all find their place his “Soul for Rent EP.â€

“I tend to get bored really quickly, so new ideas and experimentation is what keeps me going,†he says. “I think it shows in this EP.â€

PMM032 “Soul for Rent EP†by Matthew Garton is now available for purchase exclusively on beatport.com for four weeks. Look for it to be available for purchase on iTunes by February 2009.

MIGHTYFOOLS (The Neterlands) Potty Mouth Music

    www.myspace.com/mightyfools

Weekend Woes Inspire Latest Release by Netherlands’ MightyFools

Cross-genre dance duo returns to Potty Mouth Music with second EP, “Worse Than Yesterdayâ€

CHICAGO—It took a nasty Sunday hangover to inspire the mixed-up sounds of the MightyFools’ newest release on LA-based Potty Mouth Music. The two tracks juxtaposed on “Worse Than Yesterday EP†(PMM031) pair reverb and stabbing synths with the kind of peak hour rave influences Andy Samin and Jelle Keizer do best. The result is a versatile, two-track EP that melds influences of house, electro and techno into one party-centric package.

Following up on their 2008 success of “Who Da Fool?â€(PMM013), MightyFools return after a year of touring Australia, Europe and most recently, the U.S. While their DJ influences include marquee artists including A-Trak, Boys Noize, Tiga and Busy P, their studio work has taken on the more muted influences of funk and soul as of late.

“It has that special thing that we try to put into our music as well,†says Keizer.

Keizer and Samin have been putting their signature, genre-bending twist on their beats since they first began producing techno in the mid-’90s. Influenced by the rave culture of the day, the two began working more organic influences of house into their production work, creating twisty sounds that led to remix work for Tommie Sunshine, Will Bailey and Kelevra, to name a few.

On their latest EP, MightyFools again bring their vibe of music diversity to the dance floor with “Worse Than Yesterday.†The title track pulses as a heavy rave track for peak-hour sets, inspiring chaotic twists and what Keizer calls “crowd destroying sounds.†“Clean It†echoes the duo’s earlier PMM release, combining hip-hop vocal drops with analog synth stabs to create a pounding, effected out track that pulses with gruff groove.

Mightyfools dub their sound as futuristic house music that pushes the boundaries of the international house sound—regardless of the EPs they release. What keeps them players in the game?

“The music, the people, the beautiful cities we see and the great food we can taste every where,†Keizer says.

PMM031 “Worse Than Yesterday†is now available for purchase exclusively on beatport.com for four weeks. Look for it to be available for purchase on iTunes by January 2009.

    POTTY MOUTH MUSIC (Chicago): www.pottymouthmusic.com

Chicago-inspired, LA-based Potty Mouth Music is a digital music label that was launched in spring 2007 and has since release more than 30 EPs by artists from around the world. The talent roster includes producers from the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and South Africa. Inspired by the electro glitch twists of progressive producers such as Switch, Trevor Loveys and Jesse Rose, Potty Mouth ditches conventional house boundaries, imploring turntable trickery, unconventional loops and straight up fidget into its catalogue of tracks. Label head James Amato keeps house-heavy influences in place and lacing them with the kind of dirty glitch that makes it feel so good to be so bad.

JAMES AMATO (Chicago) Potty Mouth Music, SmartBar

    http://www.myspace.com/amatoinside

James Amato’s business-savvy approach to the music industry has kept him balancing roles of promoter, record label owner, DJ and producer for more than a decade. From hosting his first one-off event in 1999 to securing his position as Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s historically influential SmartBar since 2006, James has become one of the most widely recognized names on the national & electronic music scene. Most recently, James has established his industry presence further, launching his widely successful fidget/electo/tech house label, Potty Mouth Music, which has earned him notoriety worldwide.

James launched his music career in his native city of Milwaukee, Wis., where he climbed through the promotional ranks of the local and Midwest rave scene in the 1990s. After working at pioneering electronic music venues—including Revolutions Records and Bassment with promoter and mentor Steven Kaye—he landed the position of Saturday Night Music Director and resident DJ at Milwaukee’s Pure nightclub. At the time, Pure stood as the city’s premiere underground music venue, boasting a six-figure sound system and sprawling capacity.

In 2004, James invested back into the industry by becoming co-owner and director of music and bookings at Milwaukee’s Mantra Lounge. Here he launched Kamasutra, a legendary Friday event that ran for three successful years. Kamasutra would go on to host an unprecedented line-up of electronic music talent the city had never seen before, or has ever seen since. As the night’s promoter, James booked a versatile roster of underground artist that defied genre boarders. The consistent success of Kamasutra put the city’s club scene on the national radar, as it garnered press attention from publications including URB and earned James a front-page cover story in Nightclub/Bar Magazine. His success also earned him runner-up for the “Best Promoter†in the U.S. by URB magazine, along with several pictorial Kamasutra spreads throughout 2005. Locally, James earned several press accolades, including “Best Club DJ†in Milwaukee’s 2005 Shepherd Express readers’ poll.

In September 2006, James relocated to Chicago to become the new Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s SmartBar, a historic venue with a 25-year tradition of showcasing electronic talent. Under the guidance of owner Joe Shanahan James continues broaden his scope as a promoter and bookings director, debuting innovative artists to Chicago, including Switch, Alan Braxe, Digitalism, Para One, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and Claude Vonstroke.

In 2008, Club Systems International recognized his efforts to diversify and promote Chicago’s electronic music scene by selecting him as one of its “Next 10 Exciting Up-and-Comers†as part of its annual VIP Edition—“Nightlife’s 30 Most Influential People.†Additionally, James has received critical Chicago fanfare in 2007, when he was named part of NewCity magazine’s “45—45 Most Influential People That Rock Chicago!â€

James’ promotional rise on the underground electronic scene led to his creation of two widely success digital/vinyl labels, including his 2007 venture, Potty Mouth Music, which showcases a diverse roster of fidget and tech house producers. With artists including: Santiago & Bushido, Crookers, HiJack, DJ Fame, The Bulgarian, and HeavyFeet, Potty Mouth Music has established itself as an innovative label embracing the newer dirty-quirky union of electro, house and techno. The label earned further notoriety in 2008, when label members Santiago & Bushido claimed the number-one downloaded track spot for their Potty Mouth single, “Head Trick,†claiming the spot for three consecutive weeks on beatport.com. The digital download site is the second most-trafficked music internet site in the world.

James continues to push the industry envelope in balancing his career as a Chicago-based promoter and label-owner. He now DJs exclusively at his resident home of SmartBar, playing only six shows a year in Chicago. His dedication in the studio and in the club continues to the industry standard of the international electronic music scene.

    THE CROOKERS (Milan, Italy)

Drawing from influences of house, hip hop and beyond, Crookers blend their beats with the kind of fidget house finesse that gives Potty Mouth Music its soiled swagger. Since 2003, DJs Phra and Bot have been drawing upon their collective musical backgrounds to create tracks that twist, startle and surprise with synthetic pop.

Before their collaboration as Crookers, Bot and Phra pursued their music interests on a separate tip. Bot took up the piano and guitar at an early age, later moving onto synths, turntables and sequencers. Phra had already started DJing by age 11, when he was introduced to the Italian hip hop scene. Soon, he morphed into an MC and became fully immersed in a culture that would shape his future production career.

“Both of us started getting more involved in music when we used to listen to hip hop,†Phra says. When the two artists met, both were trying to branch out of their genre success and explore dance music. The experiment worked. “It felt natural to team up, seeing that we had the same musical tastes … which isn’t that easy here in Milan,†he says.

Crookers have sleazed out dance floors with a catalogue of original tracks, but it’s their work as remixers that have made them one of the most after batteries in the business. Currently, the duo is reworking tracks for the likes of Arman Van Helden, Bonde do Role, Brodinski, Magik Johnson and Bumblebeez. Listen for their forth coming, debut album to feature other fidget house favorites, including Edu K, Steed Lord, Joyce Muniz and Miss Odd Kidd and others.

When Crookers are not crafting their dirty (crooked) beats in the studio, they are busy holding down their residency with MTV (Italy). “House and hip hop are our main influences, but we try to put all the things we like in our productions. We listen to a lot of music from very different periods and genres.â€

The result is a twisted blend of glitch, tech and distortion, which finds a dirty slot on the Potty Mouth music roster.
