vicman Posted April 22 Report Share Posted April 22 Still feel wierd when I go there even though I've been to quite a number of gay clubs in the past for work puroses (I can just see it coming from a mile away...).But I saw on the City Paper that Pet Shop Boys are gunna be there on the 18th..the day after Lawler is at Buzz, no way in f****g hell am I missing PSB, so I'll just deal with Velvet. I could see more drama and shit coming froma bunch of queens than I could from a bunch of club heads. And I am hoping that the security on friday nights is just to protect us from someone bringing in weapons and gum. I would hate the fact that I stepped on a piece of gum and then tracked it out to my car. Thats something I just can't get over, no candy of any type. I will tell you now that if you ever see me with gum, don't ask for a piece cause it has been close to something very personel and I don't think you really want it. I think the gay community has a very different influence and power base compared to the the usual crowd at Buzz. The gay community in DC is quite large and influential, esp. compared to Buzz crowd. Think about it, it's easy to make a stink that they were "going after the gays" making Fox 5 look really bad and hitting them with a boycott of their sponsers etc... vs. "look at your drugged up kids," type crap. The ravers are "our kids" that we must protect vs. "those gays" who can OD for all we care. In May of ’99 local Fox affiliate (Channel 5) reporter Elisabeth Leamy, went into the club with a hidden camera. Although she caught footage of ravers admitting they use drugs, other commonplace behavior caught on the grainy video was reinterpreted and sensationalized: she claimed that cigarettes were “joints,” raver hugs were "sex acts," glowsticks and water bottles were "paraphernalia." Even more ludicrous was the staged footage of powder left on tables by ravers "who had gone off to dance." Ms. Leamy's suggestion that illegal drugs were left in plain sight on tables was so preposterous that you laughed out loud when you watched. But to quote Green Velvet, “it was no laughing matter.” Under pressure from local authorities, Buzz was forced to shut down temporarily.The effect that this newscast had on the city was tremendous. Mary Morris, a self-proclaimed geriatric raver who works at The Washington Post, agreed to a TV interview in which she vigorously defended the club as a "place that she feels comfortable taking her kids." Mary helped organize two boisterous Friday night protests outside the Wisconsin Ave. offices of Fox 5. With everyone decked out in yellow (for yellow journalism), ravers disappointed with the TV misrepresentation waved glowsticks, blew whistles and carried signs protesting the negative coverage. Drivers honked their support as they passed, and close to 400 – 600 people asserted their right to assembly on two consecutive weekends. The feeling of unity, galvanized by the slanderous newscast and a loss of a club that was "home" to many, was a feeling that we will not forget. Local music producers even made records sampling Ms. Leamy's memorable characterization of ravers with "lazy hands and vacant eyes."When Buzz reopened later that summer, certain conditions were imposed. Any overt paraphernalia such as Vicks Vap-O-Rub, dust masks and pacifiers was banned. These guidelines cleaned up the local scene's image quite a bit.
