Clubbers fear violence

Last updated 19 August 2002

A third of young black clubbers say they don't feel safe on a night out - and 77% say they've witnessed violence.

The figures come from a study for TX - the news programme for 1Xtra, Radio 1's sister station which plays black music and launched last Friday.

It also found a quarter of 16 to 24 year-olds have been involved in a violent incident at a club, while 17% admit to carrying a weapon while clubbing.

TX spoke to more than 500 black clubbers and found that 89% of them said they wanted metal detectors in clubs to stop people taking weapons inside.

London club Ministry of Sound, where two bouncers were shot in April last year, already uses metal detectors on its door.

1Xtra garage DJ Femme Fatale plays there and she says that security's "exceptionally tight" and that "the vibe's always been good and if anything it's got better".
