dgmodel
The Eric M. Taylor Center was built in 1964 and expanded in 1973. EMTC’s current capacity is 2,250. It houses adolescent and adult male inmates sentenced to terms of one year or less. Most of its housing is dormitory style. Able-bodied sentenced inmates are required to work. They constitute Rikers Island's grounds crews, facility maintenance and industrial labor force. In July, 2000 the institution's name was changed from the Correctional Institution for Men to the Eric M. Taylor Center in honor of a retired Chief of Department who capped a distinguished career by helping lead the agency to significant gains in jail safety, efficiency and performance.
