dnice35
MIAMI — More than 200 illegal Haitian migrants jumped overboard, waded ashore and rushed onto a major highway Tuesday after their 50-foot wooden boat ran aground off Key Biscayne outside Miami. The Haitians came ashore near Hobie Beach and some tried to persuade drivers on the highway to give them rides. The Coast Guard had been following the vessel, and Coast Guard personnel pulled immigrants from the water and threw them life preservers. Children were lifted from the boat and handed to people in the water.Unlike Cubans who have reached dry land, Haitian immigrants are usually denied asylum in the United States and are sent back to their homeland. It was not immediately known if there were any injuries. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
