<lol> No, not a honeymoon, just a fun trip b/c of time off and a sweet-ass fare (200 bux round trip from DCA!)

When did you live there and how long and why?

I'll only be there for about four days, so what is must-see vs. skibbable for the more touristy stuff (I especially want to see the catacombs, the Louvre, La Tour Eiffel, and Musees d'Orsay et Rodin. . possibly Versailles if there's time). . .any restaurants I should eat at? What's the best way to get from CDG airport into the city? Is the language barrier difficult? I have about six years of grammar/high school french so I actually know a fair amount. . .but it still scares me a little. . .it's been a while. ;)

Thanks sweetie! :D I'm so excited!

I... uh sort of remember that..... hey what are you going to do when you drink that much???

cookie..... Go see Rodin, d'Orsay, Napolean's tomb - rather neat thing and quick, Tower, Arc, Versaille(totally worth the ride out there on the RER. Louvre is huge.... you better figure out where in the place you would like to visit or which items, it's expensive and if you RAN through the place it would take like 3 days - people literally spend 2 weeks walking through the place. I think I covered about 1/4 one day that I ran.... really I ran, people thought I was nuts but I wanted to see as much as I could that day...... Mon Marte, Notre Dame (this is impressive)

Restaurants - anything but american food!!! I know a couple places that are super expensive.... nothing really cheap. If you're missing america for an evening and drinks and such try and find the violin dangue - I'm told they have a website. Rather neat place and a little piece of america in Paris. It's in the Latin Quarter - which I would suggest visiting. Otherwise just check out bistro's they always have good sandwiches and such.... certain hotels have really good food too. And drink lots and LOTS of GOOD coffee!!!!!

Thanks Eric! So many great suggestions. ..

I feel like Eyecrazy.gif when I think about all there is that I'd like to see in just four days -- but I think I'll just do two or so big things per day and just allow the rest for serendipity. . .and wine! Lots and lots of wine. . .

:D

Shut it!!!! Old Raver... decrepit, cane using going to get wrestle mania'd next time his ass shows up..... person!!

cOOkie...... I'd visit certain places and do like a lunch or dinner around some others. Like the Tower and Arc you could do dinner around - and the Latin Quarter dinner. Lunch at Versaille one day. Really if you plan it out right everything should go smoothly... Versaille is great for the simple size of the place!!! However if you walk basically through the garden in the back you eventually run into the Queens like play place.... sort of a little town with in the Versaille grounds - rather interesting - but could be skipped. Public Transportation in Paris rules - it's one of the best on the planet - if not on strike, if it's on strike then you're totally screwed and your vacation is otherwise ruined.... lovely socialism..... Whatever you do though you'll love it there.... nice place, so long as you keep the interaction with the locals to a minimum - these ARE the french people you hear about, damnable Parisiennes.

I went to Paris a few years back in high school. The best thing to see is Napolean's tomb, it was amazing. The arc de triumphe (sp?) is nice too but sucks walking to the top and dont try to cross the circle road around it...there are tunnels under the road which i think was the champs d'elyssee? The french were pretty rude when i went there but i really didn't care. everyone pretty much speaks english...even and McDonalds which is kinda ironic b/c at McDonalds here they don't even speak english. also the weather was kinda crappy the whole time...cloudy a lot. The metro there is very efficient but one strange thing is that u have to press a button to open the metro doors, not like here where they open automatically. hope you have fun.

I lived in Paris in 1994, so here are my suggestions.

1. Go to the Louvre, but only check out the following:

A. the old Louvre castle. It was discovered when they excavated the courtyard to install the Pei pyramids.

B. the Louis VIII (?) apartments.

2. Go to Notre Dame, but try to go during a service

3. Sainte-Chapelle (near Notre Dame)

4. Definitely take one of the river boats (bateux mouches), but only at night. They are touristy, but definitely worth it.

5. The Opera. Try to see a show there too (ballet productions).

6. The New Opera House (at the Place de la Bastille). Beautiful.

7. Skip the D'Orsee unless you are a big impressionist fan.

8. Instead of visiting the Eiffel Tower, go to Montmatre and see the view from there.

9. There is a fun sangria bar called Bar 10 near the Odeon.

10. Eat in as many bistros as possible. Prix fixe menus never fail.

11. Check out the Arab Museum on the Left Bank.

12. Definitely definitely check out the catacombs, but watch your head.

13. I'm not really sure what clubs still exist, but Queen was always fun, as well as L'Arc.

14. I would definitely skip Versailles. There are better ways to allot your time during a 4-day visit.

15. Probably most importantly, always find out what a drink costs in a club b/f you order it. I had a couple of $20 cocktails.

out,

judson

What a coincidence...............I just got back from Europe last Saturday.............3 days in London, 3 days in Paris then 3 days in London................

Paris in an of itself is very touristy by nature. But the Louvre indeed is huge............but definately hafta go to see Mona Lisa, Venus................and the French painters (seemed better than the Italian one's IMHO), we basically just walked past Notre Dame.

One of those bus tours is pretty good cause in just a short time it'll drive you all over the city to take some good pictures plus you can get off anywhere you want, Arc d' Triumph and the Champs Elyse................Eiffel Tower Took a little over an hour to go up to the top take some pics and back down. We ran into a giant demonstration of theatre workers that blocked off like half the city:laugh:

The Chateu d' Versaille is quite a site if you have time to make it.........the palace is Huge, and the grounds in back are REALLY HUGE, i'd guess 3 or 4 football fields end to end, that long.

The trip debunked a preconceived notion I had as well...............The French didn't even treat us badly

Wow some new names (well new to me ;) ) coming out of the woodwork on this one -- thank you all for your ideas! I'm trying to formulate some kind of plan to make the most use of the short time, but then again I don't want it to be too structured. . .

22 days to go!

:D
