Venezuelan Authorities Capture Accused Drug-Smuggler on FBI's 'Most Wanted'

CARACAS, Venezuela Nov. 5 — Venezuelan authorities have captured an American listed on the FBI's "Most Wanted" list for allegedly smuggling drugs, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

James Spencer Springette, 42, is accused of leading a large-scale cocaine smuggling operation based in the Caribbean since 1991. Springette was expected to be deported to the United States on Wednesday, the U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity.

Venezuelan military intelligence officers captured Springette in Caracas, but details on how and when he was arrested were not immediately available.

Springette was charged in federal court in Georgia in October 1998 with conspiracy to import cocaine and cocaine base, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and conspiracy to launder money. He is also wanted for the attempted murder of a police officer in the British Virgin Islands.

Springette was arrested in 1999 in Colombia but escaped.
