"Jack of all trades master of none?"(Need your advise

Recommended Posts

Is trying to spread yourself too thin

a bad thing? Perhaps an overly confident

way of trying to do too much and in

the end getting nowhere?

Or is ambition and risk taking

a good quality to have?

I myself have reached a point in

my life where I am presented with multiple possibilities

in my career(pretty impressive since a few months

back I had no career anymore..nor the luxury to

make these sort of decisions)

my dilemma is this..I work for

a movie studio in Rome called Cinecita.

I help in the graphics Dept doing

motion control graphics and

the occasional animated openers

for commercials etc...

(Hopefully an animated French show

by February as well) HOWEVER

I have been doing some writing

on the side as a hobby

(the occasional delusion of

grandeur screen play, half started chapters

and notes for a sci-fi novel and

the ramblings of my inner thoughts in

a semi autobiographical thing I keep

going back to)

A few day ago I left one

of my short stories on a desk

at work during lunch that I was

trying to translate into a screenplay

to give to a friend and see if he'd

be into working on a short indie thing..

Well after lunch I get back and find out

that someone had taken the story

and read it. The girl that works next to me

is grinning and tells me that she

knew it was wrong but that she couldn't resist it

anymore and she had to have a peak at these

mysterious things I half type up and half

scribble on every day during free times...

I was so emberased..but then she goes

"shit that's really good stuff I know

a friend that works as a screen writer etc..."

I humbly accept to meet this person and today

I spent the entire afternoon with a woman

that writes for RAI (An Italian Television network)

as well as movies. She read my piece and

told me that I should immediately enroll into

a screen writers class and that she could help

me get a connection at RAI.(they need writers

that write in English)

...further more she told me that I should

give her anything else I have and she

would help

me polish it if she thinks it's good

and shop it around.

I'm shocked..confused and very

flattered! But I'm also torn..because I LOVE

ANIMATION. I love the world of digital arts and

I'd kinda had my heart in taking a MAYA and >SGI

class to sharpen up my 3D skills

and go into the special effect spectrum

side of things...

THIS however has great potential..

(and I too love to write.Like you can't tell

by now)And screen writing is really fun.

Plus who's to say that in the future I

won't ever be able to be involved

in all aspects of a film I write

(fuckit Burton started as an animator..so

did Lynch)

THANKS MAN

(I'm writing this all retarded in sections

BTW cuz CP's screwd up..

so bare with me)

Am I spreading myself

too thin here? If I take a screen

writing course will my OTHEr "art" suffer?

Is this one of those:

"Master of all trades master of

none" type scenarios?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It can wear you out, but if your heart's into it, you can't argue with that. I'm up to six different aliases now that I DJ/produce under, two more aliases that are just recording projects, plus this pile of remixes that people are still waiting for me to finish for them. Along with that I'm busy with graphic design, web design, and screenprinting my own line of t-shirts. It always seems like there's never enough hours in the day and that not enough gets completed in the end. But you'll never find yourself bored either. I say go for it if you want to do both. Just make sure you focus on getting projects completed so you're not bouncing back and forth between them to the point where nothing gets finished.

A hiadus is always great for artists. A break long or short can actually make you more creative andpowerful, im not saying slack, but 2 things is ok, just do it like the commercial says, every great artist has a few passions, the greatest just know when to focus and stick with the project at hand.

Gratzie Carro..

(and believe me..

I've already made some

great girl "friends" here...

however I refuse to indulge in

anything but physical pleasure from

now on.)

Who needs romantic bullshit when

you can have two or three hottie Euro-

bambina friends with "benefits".

:D
