12/28/02 Centro-Fly Review....

Recommended Posts

theres no reason to hold this review back any longer....

My very first time at Centro-Fly (if you guys remember, i was taking my sister and a large group of her friends out to their first nyc clubbing experience...).

Got to the club very early- alittle after 11pm, was hoping to watch the vibe slowly build from the beginning till the end of the night. We relaxed along the booths with a few drinks and waited patiently for the fun to begin...

At around 12:30 the girls were interested in hearing some hip-hop downstairs in the Pinky Room, however I was informed by a member of security manning the staircase down that there was a "private party" going on tonight. I explained to him politely that we were part of a birthday party and that I had a very generous amount of females to add to their little 'party'. I even went so far as to point out the members of my group for him. Since the upstairs was hardly filled to capacity and the downstairs was even emptier, I didnt think that it would be a big problem to allow us down for a half hour, or an hour even, to check out the space and to hear what they had going on down there. The best the staff could do was tell me they'd get back to me, being that there were 13 of us total at $25 a head, plus we all had a few drinks, I dont see why this was such I big deal. I was not dressed like a slumlord, In fact I went above and beyond the dresscode requirements (I am very fair, if I show up looking like a bum, I would never fault you for not letting me into your club).

Furthermore, there is a booth area directly across the main floor directly opposite the dj booth, which features a circular bar. It wasnt anything particular special, other than at a certain point it was much closer that the side bar to us, however, when I walked over to grab a drink, I was informed with a sneer that I would not be allowed into that section of the club either. At this point, I really began to get upset that although my party had already put several hundred dollars into the owners pockets, that nearly 50% of the club would be off-limits to us. I decided to protest this the only way I really know how, I gathered up my group and we walked out on the club, in effect, making them lose not only several hundred dollars in revenue (13 people x $10 a mixed drink = $130 every single round we ordered), but also let everyone in our party know exactly the run-around we got, thereby taking several thousand in potiential further profits out of Centro's hands.

All in all, this venue left an extremely bad taste in my mouth...the crowd was nowhere near as sophisticated enough, weathly enough, nor well dressed enough, for this venue to project such a 'hipper-than-thou' attitude. A new Moomba this is not. Quite frankly I felt the venue in general, and the dancefloor in particular, lacked any sort of enjoyable vibe. I would not recommend Centro-Fly to anyone I know.

On a side note, I took the girls to Factory way early, we arrived at around 2am. They did get a chance to enjoy themselves and let loose there.

In closing, I highly doubt I will ever attend another party at Centro, quite frankly, there are far too many incredible venues in New York for me to waste any more of my time on a place that obviously does not value my business.

If you are a Centro promoter/owner.etc etc, you are more than welcome to dispute my claim either here or via email/instant messenger, my email is reddog4063@aol.com and my AIM is GlobixJoe. However, I feel I portrayed your venue as acurately as possible. I do not recommend Centro to anyone on this messageboard, or any others for that matter.

Oddly enough, while a lot of people I know had problems with Centro-Fly, I've never had any bad experiences there.

Chances are, it depends on the promoter and how they booked the venue. Keep in mind that practically every single room in the club is its own "area"...and they can and do get rented out for private parties.

Oh well, I suppose in the end, it really depends on the promoters and the specific circumstances based upon the night.

clubs have VIP areas and certain areas that are rented out for private parties, what's the big deal  . so u weren't let downstairs because some1 paid money to rent out the room, completely understandable. so u weren't let into the champagne room cause it's the VIP room, bid deal, there is another bar area about 15 feet to the left right off the main dance floor, and another to the right. if u didnt like the music or the crowd, then fine complain about that, but dont complain about not being let into the private areas of the club.

Exactly.. I stay away from Centro on other nights because I heard it fuckin sucks. The bouncers there are assholes, i mean come on... they just got out of jail, just look at them and their jumpsuits.

IMO Centro is one of those places where having good looking girls in your group will get you places. I guess they didn't like something. SCrew em.

So how exactly did these girls "let loose"??

i'm going to invite you to my restaurant, but i'm making you sit and eat in the bathroom :aright:

you wanna have a vip, thats fine, you wanna rent your club out for the night, thats fine also, but dont make me pay full admission and walk into half a club, tell me beforehand with a sign or notice that states theres a private party or whatever and certain stuff is not available, i SPECIFICALLY chose that venue because my guests would have a choice of two different types of music. If I had known that, for that night, a second sound was not available, i would have absolutely not went there, instead i would have walked over to one of the other clubs in the neighborhood. Don't sell me one thing and then give me something else. They basically pulled a bait-and-switch on me. if you're gonna rent out a whole floor then give us back the vip in exchange, make it so theres atleast the option of having a change of scenery.

I don't know, maybe im still steamed about it, do you think im being harsh? We dropped alittle over $1,000 on last night and i expect a certain level of service for that kind of bank. this is new york city, i ultimately took my business elsewhere.

Centro Thursday. You will not be dissapointed. Give it another shot...

Who is spinning this coming thursday after new years?

Yeah, add another one who says that Thursdays @ Centro should be tried. Less variety of music though, but top notch main floor music and a good crowd.

That room across from the DJ booth is always VIP.

I don't remember seeing instances of the Pinky or Tapioca being closed off for private parties, but it would be nice if they could announce such things in advance.

Here's the schedule:

http://www.centro-fly.com/standard.htm

I think whoever is playing there on a given night can have an effect on what kind of crowd there will be. I have had fun on Fridays and Saturdays there, but they're less predictable. If there's a DJ listed for the Pinky or Tapioca, then those rooms are more likely open to all for that night.

For the day after New Years, only Low End Specialists (the residents) are listed. They're really good and alone could make the night, but maybe there could be a last-minute addition to make it better. Is there any possibility of that? I believe I have seen that happen before.
