I was in New Orleans on business earlier this month, and I was absolutely DISGUSTED with the scene. The entire Bourbon St. area is literally a trash dump; contaminated with dirty bars, dirty people, and this disgusting odor that engulfed you at every corner.

This is merely my opinion.

In order to answer your question, the place to be is on Bourbon St. (within the French Quarter). And, through my walking tours, the best hotel is probably the Ramada Inn on Bourbon. It is right in the middle of everything.

If you are an attractive female, may God help you.

if you want true underground the state palace on canal is the place to go and there are plenty of attaractive females in that crack house. if there is no party there, then head to 735, raymond throws down some good shit there on fridays, if you want yuppie/underground go to ampersand behind the palace. tourist, drag queens, and drunk fuck-heads are only allowed to walk on bourbon!

Since a message board helped out on where to go in New Orleans, figured it only appropriate to inform everyone else this review of the city's nightlife.

Understanding, my perspective is coming from someone who has experience nightlife in Europe, LA, NY, and Vegas, at least.

Here's the review.

Overall, New Orleans is a very average city when it comes to nightlife when you compare it to cities like NY, LA, Vegas, and offerings in Florida. It simply doesn't have a lot to offer in comparison to what other cities offers and what it does offer is not at all unique. What is distressing about New Orleans is that its promotes itself as being bigger than it is and offering stuff that it really doesnt.

New Orleans' Burbon street is located in the French Quarter which unto itself is architectually gorgeous, a palatte of balconies and shutters, that leaves you feeling like you are on the backlot to a studio. But, after about 3 hours of the French Quarter, it grows old. The City has done virtually nothing to enhance the experience of the French Quarter. Their zoning department should be ashamed of themselves.

You virtually stumble upon Burbon Street which has no special announcing cultural or comparable sign but does have occasional modern buildings that destroy the charm of the street and neighborhood.

Burbon Street is nothing unique. It's basically a couple of long blocks with bar after bar with a few restaurants and few strip joints (that use the term "bottomless" to mean all nude). It's no different that any other city that offers bar after bar on its street.

Outside of Burbon Street, you have very few nightclubs for locals, virtually no afterhours, and very average venues. Locals complain that beyond Burbon there isnt a whole lot to do in town.

Here are the great things and bad things about New Orleans nightlife:

Great

1. You can drink on the street.

2. You can take your drink from one bar into another bar.

3. Women flashing for beads

4. No ID checking

5. Very good drinks. This may be the best selling point about New Orleans. (If you don't drink and you don't like a frat environment, you will hate New Orleans)

New Orlean's drinks are quite good and in some cases, yes, very unique. Even some bars claim ownership rights to their drinks, trademark to their name and ingredients. Here are the suggestions:

a) Hurricane. Don't have it at Pat OBriens if you dont like your drink too sweat. Rather, go to Metropolitan (Metro) because they give you more alcohol.

B) Hand Grenade. You can only get it at Tropical Isle in an incredibly unusual plastic container. A fabulous drink! But you will dislike it if you don't like lemon-like sodas like gateroade or sprite.

c) Skylab at Pat Obriens. Blue Curacoe, Vodka, Rum and juice. Very good.

d) Irish Coffee. Dont go with the baileys choice.

Bad

1. Filthy. The streets are like a frat house. They dont have enough garbage cans. Imagine litter everywhere all day long on Burbon Street until they clean at 2 am approx.

2. Filthy. The restrooms, bars, restaurants would get an F by the LA Health Department. Kitchens ... restrooms ... unbelievable! Even at places that must gross about $500K in income a year like Cafe Du Monde --- you think you are in an outhouse inside the kitchen!

3. Security. No security guards anywhere in the bars. So hope nothing goes wrong.

4. Music. Too much kareoke, top 40 rock and roll, and people passing off Honky-Tonk music and Elton John piano tunes as Jazz. House of Blues doesnt play jazz on some nights, the bars play rock n roll ... if you think Burbon street is jazz club after jazz club, a little bit of Miles, a little Dixieland, it absolutely is not. If you want to hear jazz at the Foundation Room, you have to sit in a theater seating.

5. Dancing. Everyone dances in the bars in rows looking at the band. You think you are in Europe.

Here are some great venues that you should check out:

1) Pat Obriens

2) Tropical Isle

3) Razoos

4) Coyote Ugly

5) The W

6) Metro

7) &

8) 735

9) House of Blues

10) K Pauls for dinner

Here are some places that you should skip

1) 360.

Overall, New Orleans for nightlife is at best a one - two day experience. You run out of venues very quick and the overall environment grows tired after a while because it the same thing over and over again.
