dnice35
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Protesters blocked two lanes of traffic and a busy intersection Thursday morning in Midtown Manhattan as part of a planned "die-in." Police have arrested 199 people. Members of M27, a coalition of antiwar groups, broke through police barricades and lay down at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue to act as mock war victims. They shouted: "The people, united, will stop this war." In addition to the "die-in" in Midtown, the group plans to have supporters block other intersections throughout the city and protest in front of government agencies, media offices and other private industries in New York. Organizers said the "die-in" symbolized Iraqi war victims. A single lane of Fifth Avenue was reopened to traffic after about a half-hour. Later, a small group of protesters, draped in black and walking to the beat of a drum, staged a mock funeral march on the same block. "Nothing else gets attention," protester Johannah Westmacott told The Associated Press, explaining the civil disobedience. "It's not news when people voice their opinions." The demonstration attracted counter-protesters, the AP reported, describing a man with a red, white and blue bandana under a hard hat who argued face-to-face with a protester with a pony tail and sideburns.
