babbo
ok, a stylist usually cannot design, they can put things together, but not design from scratch, they need other peoples ideas/designs to work with fyi
opticrush
dj/ song writer, because you need talent, lots of time on your hands, and a lot of patience. the field of musicianship may also leave you financially broke. Those mixers and vinyls/cd players can be costly, and so can a production studio if your into producing.
dialectics
all things being equal, and assuming a strict divergence between the two (e.g. a dj that does not produce vs a producer that does not dj) without a doubt the producer has more musical talent and is more of an artist. Creating a song from nothing - from circuits and samples, knobs, buttons, sliders, software loops you've written yourself - way more required then buying someone else's record and putting it on a record player. From a creative standpoint, the dj is just some collector, a trend watcher. when you're a dj you can't say "i want this song to go this way" and make it go that way, unless someone has pressed soemthing along those lines onto vinyl already. The strength of a dj is not musical - it is of being an architect. You sculpt the night from beginning to end, shape it and mold it for the peoples. Being a dj is all about the awesome responsibility of an entire crowd - and if you fuck up they will all remember it. being a good dj is not just about skillz in beatmatching or overlaying two or three records at the same time - its about trust. you're selling trust that you can put your night in this person's hands....that being said... there are djs that produce, who have honed their talent from listening to tens/hundreds of thousands of records and knowing how they've fucked up, or knowing how they will be used within the context of a dj set. that is a huge gift to the dance community.and that being said, the ideal situation, combining musician and architect is the live PA act - especially acts like Lab4 or infusion, who can get their sound better then anyone dropping records because they have total control. And the line is not so straight again, because there are also turntablists who make original music out of the records.... and there are dj+1's, like chris leibing who augments his set with loop samplers and live effects, or richie hawtin when he used to incorporate the 909 into his dj sets, or even d:fuse who just busts out the electronic bongos in the middle of a set and starts banging away. And what makes a dj who just drops 10 of his productions in 1hr any less deservant of the shit we would give madonna if we found out she was lip synching at her concerts? (i think she was i don't remember). and worst of all there are the PA mimes - f**kheads who say they're performing live but really just stand there pressing keys while a DAT tape is rolling or worse - hitting "play" on cubase and standing around like a doofus until your set is over *cough* *cough* *advent* *cough*. peaz, rob
babbo
good post bro. imho without song writers there aint no dj's, without designers, there aint no stylists. the seed of the art comes from the creators. the dj, and the stylist deal with what has been already created, imho thx
