biznation00
I am a child of the 80’s. That is what I prefer to be called. The 90’s can do without me. Grunge isn't here to stay, fashion is fickle and "Generation X" is a myth created by some over-40 writer trying to figure out why people wear flannel in the summer. When I got home from school, I played with my Atari 2600. I spent hours playing Pitfall, Donkey Kong, Pack Man, or Frogger. I never did beat Asteroids. Then I watched "Scooby-Doo." Daphne was a Goddess, and I thought Shaggy was smokin’ something synthetic in the back of their psychedelic van. I hated Scrappy. I would sleep over at friends' houses on the weekends. We played army with G.I. Joe figures, and I set up galactic wars between Autobots and Decepticons. We stayed up half the night throwing marshmallows and Velveeta at one another. We never beat the Rubik’s cube.I got up on early on Saturday mornin’s to watch Hanna-Barbera cartoons like "Snorks," “The Smurfs†& “G.I. Joeâ€. On weeknights Daisy Duke was my future wife. I was goin’ to own the General Lee & shoot dynamite arrows out the back (does anyone know why did they weld the doors shut?). I watched Indiana Jones save the Ark of the Covenant & wondered what Yoda meant when he said, "No, there is another."Ronald Reagan was cool. My family took summer vacations. My brother and I fought in the back seat. At the hotel we found creative uses for Connect Four pieces like throwing them in that big air conditioning unit.I listened to Duran Duran sing about the “Reflex†(I figured he was talkin’ about the doctor visits when doc would would wack you in the knee cap to test your reflex). I was a lil’ freaked by Boy George & the colors of his dreams, red, gold, and green, but I sang along anyway. MTV played videos. Nickelodeon played "You Can't Do That on Television". HBO showed Mike Tyson pummel everybody except Robin Givens, the bad actress from "Head of the Class" also seen in a pepsi commercial.I drank Dr. Pepper. "I'm a Pepper, you're a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?" Shasta was for losers. TAB was a laboratory accident. Capri Sun was a social statement & I felt cool sippin’ it down in front of my school buddies. Orange juice wasn't just for breakfast anymore, and bacon had to move over for somethin’ meatier. My mom put a thousand Little Debbie Snack Cakes in my Transformer lunch box, and filled my G.I. Joe Thermos with red Kool-Aid. I would never eat the snack cakes, though. Did anyone? I got two thousand cheese and cracker snack packs, and I ate those. I went to school and had recess. I went to the same classes everyday. Some weirdo from the eighth grade always won the science fair with the workin’ hydro-electric plant that leaked on my project about music and plants. Field day was bigger than Christmas, but it always managed to rain just enough to make everybody miserable before they fell over in the three-legged race. Burping was cool. Rubber band fights were cooler. Pencil fights!! A substitute teacher was a baby sitter/marked woman. I tried joinin’ the Cub Scouts, but it seemed a bit gay after a while. I never got any skill award, I don't remember ever doing anything, but I was always damn good at Sports & recess. The world stopped when the Challenger exploded. Half of your friends' parents got divorced & still do. People did not just say no to drugs. etc, etc, etc… When you put all this stuff together, you have my childhood. If this stuff sounds familiar, then I bet you are one, too. I’m a child of the eighties... Kids don’t think like I used to anymore & toys have been replaced with Playstations & Xbox. Time’s change, people change… "Life’s" a Bitch!! Biz

laliux
I am also another child of the eighties. I also played with my Atari 2600 after school. I remember playing Shinobi and Double Dragon when coming to the States on vacation and finishing them with just one quarter. I was introduced to Heavy Metal by Quiet Riot and their "Metal Health" ....Poison, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard were simply amazing. There are so many things about the 80s... I was scared to death watching Freddy Krueger on those movies...also scared to watch the show of Donnie and Marie Osmond on Saturdays. Arnold from "Different Strokes" was cool and fell in love with Dana Plato. That's enough for now; I am getting nostalgic.
djfrosty
You forgot about Combat. Although this was the game every one had because it came with the game. In my shoe box of Atari cartridges this one collected the most dust. It seemed like yesterday when I tried to jump over the three aligator heads in Pitfall. Thanks for bringing back memories biz. erickamikaze
I have been reading and reminiscing. For me growing up it was all about my Kangaroos shoes where I put my money. buying every new pair of Air Jordans even though my old ones were still good. Riding around on my Big Wheel, I think I went through like 5 of these things, I kept putting holes in the plastic wheels. Playing with Legos and trading baseball cards with my friends. I spent so much damn money on baseball cards, and the gum was always hard as a rock. Waking up early in the summer watching cartons then playing baseball till it was time for dinner. I was not cool enough to have a game system. I got a Commodore 64 computer. My parents thought games were bad so they gave me this computer you had to hook up to TV, that only had like 4 games 4 it, and they all consisted of some type of shooting at something. Oh yeah I did get Combat and Pitfall, since they made those games for everything. As I watched TV I wanted to have a house like Webster (with all those secret passages), a girlfriend like Punky Brewster, a car that could talk like Knight Rider, and wondered if Boss Hog would ever catch Bo and Luke. For the music it was all about Prince, Run DMC, Breakdancin beats, trying to act like we knew how to breakdance. I remember going and getting cardboard to put in my front yard to dance on. My friends and I also thought we had a cool group that could rap and dance, so in 4th grade for our "BIG Talent Show" we did a performance/dance to Brass Monkey by the Beastie Boys. Wow that was ugly, but fun as hell. I also related to the fresh Prince and how "Parents Just Don't Understand", sing it with me....You know parents are the same no matter time nor placeThey don't understand that us kids are gonna make some mistakesSo to you, all the kids all across the landThere's no need to argue, parents just don't understandI remember one yearMy mom took me school shoppingIt was me, my brother, my mom, oh, my pop, and my little sisterAll hopped in the carWe headed downtown to the Gallery MallMY mom started bugging with the clothes she choseI didn't say nothing at firstI just turned up my noseShe said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20"I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"The next half hour was the same old thingMy mother buying me clothes from 1963And then she lost her mind and did the ultimateI asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!I said, "Mom, what are you doing, you're ruining my rep"She said, "You're only sixteen, you don't have a rep yet"I said, "Mom, let's put these clothes back, please"She said "no, you go to school to learn not for a fashion show"I said, "This isn't Sha Na Na, come on Mom, I'm not BowzerMom, please put back the bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousersBut if you don't want to I can live with that butYou gotta put back the double-knit reversible slacks"She wasn't moved - everything stayed the sameInevitably the first day of school cameI thought I could get over, I tried to play sickBut my mom said, "No, no way, uh-uh, forget it"There was nothing I could do, I tried to relaxI got dressed up in those ancient artifactsAnd when I walked into school, it was just as I thoughtThe kids were cracking up laughing at the clothes Mom boughtAnd those who weren't laughing still had a ballBecause they were pointing and whisperingAs I walked down the hallI got home and told my Mom how my day wentShe said, "If they were laughing you don't need them, cause they're not good friends"For the next six hours I tried to explain to my MomThat I was gonna have to go through this about 200 more timesSo to you all the kids all across the landThere's no need to argueParents just don't understandOh-kay, here's the situationMy parents went away on a week's vacation andThey left the keys to the brand new PorscheWould they mind?Umm, well, of course notI'll just take it for a little spinAnd maybe show it off to a couple of friendsI'll just cruise it around the neighborhoodWell, maybe I shouldn'tYeah, of course I shouldPay attention, here's the thick of the plotI pulled up to the corner at the end of my blockThat's when I saw this beautiful girlie girl walkingI picked up my car phone to perpetrate like I was talkingYou should've seen this girl's bodily dimensionsI honked my horn just to get her attentionShe said, "Was that for me?"I said, "Yeah"She said, "Why?"I said, "Come on and take a ride with a helluva guy"She said, "How do I know you're not sick? You could be some deranged lunatic"I said, "C'mon toots - my name is the Prince =Beside, would a lunatic have a Porsche like this?"She agreed and we were on our wayShe was looking very good and so was I, I must say - wordWe hit McDonald's, pulled into the driveWe ordered two Big Macs and two large fries with CokesShe kicked her shoes off onto the floorShe said, "Drive fast, speed turns me on"She put her hand on my knee, I put my foot on the gasWe almost got whiplash, I took off so fastThe sun roof was open , the music was highAnd this girl's hand was steadily moving up my thighShe had opened up three buttons on her shirt so farI guess that's why I didn't notice that police carWe're doing ninety in my Mom's new PorscheAnd to make this long story short - shortWhen the cop pulled me over I was scared as hellI said, "I don't have a license but I drive very well, officer"I almost had a heart attack that dayCome to find out the girl was a twelve-year-old runawayI was arrested, the car was impoundedThere was no way for me to avoid being groundedMy parents had to come off from vacation to get meI'd rather be in jail than to have my father hit meMy parents walked inI got my grip, I said, "Ah, Mom, Dad, how was your trip?"They didn't speak - I said, "I want to plead my case"But my father just shoved me in the car by my faceThat was a hard ride home, I don't know how I survivedThey took turns - one would beat me while the other was drivingI can't believe it, I just made a mistakeWell parents are the same no matter time nor placeSo to you all the kids all across the landTake it from me, parents just don't understand

djfrosty
I didn't know we were in English 101 in College and had to quote sources. My point is this is an online forum...And for two, I don't think he ever claimed Biz wrote it anyways.Enough of this plagiarism shit. Let's reminisce some more.Good memories of the 80's...Pete Rose hitting 4192 (I was at the game), losing virginity, going to Freeze Bowl which was AFC Championship of Bengals vs. Chargers in 1982, hitting a hole in one in 1987 (I was 14 and it's still my only hole in one), living off my parent's money, playing 27 holes of golf a day six days a week.Damn...those were great, stress free times.
