sassa
my friend is having a nissan fairlady shipped from japan, i also know this one shmuck giovanni from jersey who claims he has shit shipped from germany to sell x3 the amount here...so, it is cheaper, more reliable, better to have it shipped? also, what if a car is outlawed in the US, will i run into mad problems with customs? what if i told them it was one kind so i don't get any headaches.....advice? bigpoppanils
it depends on what state you live in. Some states are more lenient than others. usually the car has to be modified to meet US emissions standards, and sometimes crash standards. that can easily take over $15k to do, depending on the car.in most states, cars 25 years or older are exempt from meeting them.if the car shares mechanicals with cars sold here, it becomes easier to import.i dont know what the laws for california are. I have seen pics of Smarts being driven in southern california, so maybe the laws arent that strict.there are some dealers that specialize in doing this for certain brands, but they are usually hard to find
Guest saleen351
for the most part it's illegal...people in the military have an easier time doing it...
babbo
ive done it twice, thru bmw, and mercedes. drive all around europe, then shipped them to usa, sweet and easy, savings is small, not large
sassa
i'd probably have it shipped to nyc from europe, if i got a european car. how exactly does it work, besides making sure the car fits whatever bs standards that exist? Do i rent space on a cargo ship? something like that?
ghhhhhost
I know how the opposite works..as in shippin from here to europe. u get a container on a ship..its like $3000..and send the car a few weeks in advance..then u go pick it up at the port and usually u have to pay a decent sized customs fee..its a % of the price from what i remember...some countries wont even let u import a car if its over 5 yrs old. teklord310
Importing cars is like crossing the Mexican border. They let everything out, but are very picky about what comes in.It's a LOT of $$ to convert a car to meet us standards. If you are talking about buying a car in Germany, staying there for 2 weeks and shipping it back that is common. The NEW car you just bought overseas was destined for US shores so there is no problem. Good luck.

atomicapples
i didnt read the thread, but you will have mostly a emissions and a safety problem. its easier if you cop the car in half and then sell it. btw : a fairlady is not worth bring over. they have it here. just rip the motor and tranny out and sell it.
