Annoying Pop Ups

if anyone has Windows XP and haven't installed a firewall, i'm sure you get those pain in the ass messenger service pop ups. turns out microsoft allows this to happen in XP. instead of buying/finding shareware like pop up stoppers (WHAT A FUCKING SCAM) just do this lil trick i figured out today..

go to Control Panel (if you don't know where that is unplug your computer and throw it out your window) --> Administrative Tools --> Services. this will bring up a dialog box with a list of services running on your machine. look for Messenger and double-click it. it will be defaulted to Automatic, change it to Disabled... poof, no more pop-ups.

pays to be a computer dork.. you're welcome.

I have that service running but I'm not sure what pop ups you're referring to.........I don't get any.

as for internet pop up blockers, the only legit one I know of is if you download the google tool bar, which builds itself right into the browser..........it has a pop up blocker built in and it doesn't do any funny stuff the scam ones do.

what?

tyco.. pop up's, for example, are from messenger services advertising anything from Porn to company's offering pop up blockers. here's an example...

letmeknow.. critical updates like virus definition files and windows system updates work by status being sent from ur machine to their servers to determine what versions, patches, etc you have installed. if you're out of date, they'll send you what you need. the messenger service itself was primarily designed for network admins to be able to send messages to all users.. doesn't really apply for a home PC, so g'head and turn it off.
