A new law in the Garden State makes it illegal to drive while drowsy. "Maggie's Law" is named for a 20-year-old college student killed in a 1997 accident in which the surviving driver in the other vehicle had been awake for 30 hours prior to the collision. The new law makes driving while drowsy a crime punishable by 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. The Associated Press reports the law is the first of its kind; the AP also estimates that 51 percent of motorists are drowsy at the wheel, based on previous studies.
