For the New York production and DJ duo known as Trendroid, it's been a dizzying climb up the dance music ranks. Pankaj and Matt Edwards, the Trendroid partners, have established themselves as names to watch in just a few short years, building a huge buzz in the dance music underground. And they did it all while holding down day jobs few would associate with basslines and beats: Working as full-time doctors at a prestigious New York hospital!

The duo met as first year medical students in New Jersey, where they discovered their similar taste in music. While swapping stories around the anatomy table, they realized that they had been dj'ing and partying in the same circles for years, without ever meeting. Remembering a time when their lives were not consumed by scalpels and stethoscopes, they talked about NYC in the early 90's. It was an era of creativity, color and eclecticism that the city's nightlife has not since seen, and the days of NASA, Disco 2000, and Club USA left a strong imprint on them.

They took away from that culture a respect for diversity and forward thinking, both in music and in life. But by the time they met, the music and scene in NY had become fractioned and uninspired, losing the flavor and originality that it once had. So, as Pankaj and Matt say, "The Trendroid arrived to help shake things up a bit." In the process, the two have pushed their own unique style, one they describe as a "future house" sound.

At the time, Matt favored classic NY house and tribal, and Pankaj played UK progressive house. Drawing from their many influences, they soon got into the studio and wrote their first tracks, "Ignition" and "Hausjam", which the legendary NY nightclub Twilo immediately signed to their new label. "Ignition" turned out to be a progressive house monster that still doesn't leave most djs' record boxes. The B side, "Hausjam", is a tough tech-houser that may just clip your bass bins. Twilo used this record as their debut single, and things started snowballing from there.

Their next original track "Trendication" on Twisted Records was a massive smash, picked by Mixer Magazine as a single of the month, and played by X-Press 2 four times in one set at London's Fabric nightclub. In the last 12 months, Trendroid has remixed everyone from German trance heroes Jam & Spoon to to pop star Mandy Moore. They've remixed 3 number one records in that time (Superchumbo's "Revolution", X-Press 2's "Smoke Machine" and Murk's "Dark Beat"), and their tracks have been licensed to the prestigious Cream and Global Underground compilations, among others.

Their range as DJs and producers and tremendous buzz was certainly recognized throughout the industry, with URB Magazine recently selecting Trendroid as part of their influential "Next 100" list of 2002. And it did not take long for their skills to be noticed by top DJ's of all genres, including Roger Sanchez, Sasha, and Danny Tengalia. Pete Tong even called them "the ones to look out for" in his MUZIK magazine column. The list of their supporters is far too long to describe, but in looking at these names it is clear why many people describe their work as "fusing the sound of the UK with the attitude & energy of NY."

Kinetic Records also recognized the momentum that Pankaj & Matt had gathered, and during the Winter Music Conference in 2002, they approached Trendroid about mixing the sixth volume in their ground breaking Transport series. (Previous Transport releases were mixed by the likes of Paul Oakenfeld, Quivver, and Max Graham). The duo took the series in a new direction, reflective of their unique sound, fusing house with tribal, prog, and techno elements. The compilation truly demonstrated Pankaj and Matt's uncanny ability to layer and build a DJ set. It received rave reviews in all the relevant magazines, and also established Trendroid as the newest players in the globetrotting DJ ranks: they regularly play almost all major North American markets, with residencies in San Francisco and The Dominican Republic. Some of their more notable international gigs include Pacha - Ibiza, Turnmills & Renaissance - London, The Womb - Tokyo, Plus Soda - Athens, and the massive Electro Parade in Portugal.

In the next year, expect a number of new projects by Trendroid, for labels such as Stealth, FUJU, Twisted, and others. With their medical careers now on hold, Pankaj and Matt will devote all their attention to making music. If these first few years are any indication, Trendroid has nothing but a promising future ahead of them. Looking for dance music artists on the verge of making it big? Check out Trendroid.
