BOOM 7 - The Family Reunion

Area One: Main Stage

BAD BOY BILL

Behind the Decks, CD/DVD Release Party!

http://www.badboybill.com; Chicago, USA, EARTH

Technology has finally caught up with house DJ legend Bad Boy Bill. The long-awaited new release from the DJ voted by the public as "America's Favorite DJ" this year in BPM Culture Magazine's poll is ready to take the nation by storm. Bad Boy Bill, notorious for his Bangin' The Box Series, steps up now with a new release sure to be the first of the its kind: Behind The Decks. Out on System Recordings, the 2-disc set boasts an almost 2-hour DVD in addition to a 70+ minute mix CD, with a discrete 5.1 Dolby surround sound mix with visuals. In a market full of simulated-surround sound DJ mixes, which merely add some reverb and audience participation in an attempt to give the mix a live feel, Behind The Decks actually isolates vocals from percussion and the like, bringing a truly revolutionary live feel through 5 speakers. Also included are Bill's music videos, behind-the-scenes footage from the road and in the studio, and live interview footage, which Bill hopes will give his audience "a good picture of what I'm like and what I do."

Bill got his start DJing as a teenager, joining a DJ crew in the neighborhood and spinning at DJ battles. Only a senior in high school, Bad Boy Bill started his own record label. He eventually became a household name as a DJ on Chicago's B96, using his "Bad Boy Bill" audio ID as a way of distinguishing himself from the other DJs on the radio. Today, Bill spends most of his time producing tunes in the studio or out on the road, playing up to 150 gigs annually, everywhere from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles to international hotspots including Peru, Colombia, Germany, England, and Spain.

Spinning the crowd into a dancing frenzy is Bill's motivation. "My DJ style originated with the idea to remix a song live with two copies of the same record and then combine scratching and hip-hop techniques with house grooves." Bill says. "The payoff for me is seeing people dancing and having a great time during my set." Now the live experience can be brought straight into your own living room, and with a number of Bill's own tracks also included on Behind The Decks, the album is a great precursor to Bad Boy Bill's next project: his artist album.

DJ RAP

Charissa Saverio, also known as DJ Rap, has for the last eight years been the undisputed queen of the hardcore and drum'n'bass turntables. She's become a prime mover, the prime female mover in fact, on the hardcore, jungle and drum'n'bass scenes that have shaped the last ten years of her and countless other lives.

Simultaneously a label owner, producer, recording artist and world-renowned DJ, East London's Charissa Saverio, aka DJ Rap stands alongside the likes of DJs Hype, Grooverider and LTJ Bukem as one of the few, and only female, pioneers of drum and bass. This year she celebrates the first ten years of her career, and the re launch of her imprint Proper Talent, with the release of the mix compilation 'Propa Classics - Vol 1'. The album features two exclusive new tracks and thirteen of the best and rarest dance-floor anthems that forged her reputation as the 'first lady of jungle'.

Born to an Italian father and an Irish-Malaysian mother in Singapore, Rap spent her childhood traveling the world - Indonesia, Malta and Africa were all home for a while. Her stepfather managed luxury hotels and she grew up living in the palatial surroundings of Raffles in Shangri La. As a child her two loves were playing piano and horse-riding. She'd practice the piano six hours a day and spend the rest of her time in the stables dreaming of being a pianist. When the family moved to Southampton, England in her early teens, she discovered pop music for the first time and after leaving school took time out to travel the world, backpacking through Greece, Turkey and Europe. She eventually returned to London and joined a legal firm, first as a secretary, then training to be a solicitor. Her life, for the first time in years, seemed to be following a normal, everyday course. It was from this bliss that Charissa METAmorphosized into DJ Rap. "She jacked in her job, kicked out her difficult boyfriend and discovered raves."I

Rap was first drawn to the turntables after seeing Dem 2 spin at a party at the tail end of the eighties. "Watching Dean rock the crowd really put the idea into my head," she remembers. "Breakbeats were just coming in back then and the power he had over the crowd was awesome." Pulling favors to learn the technical ropes and cashing in on her childhood musical education, Charissa put together her debut single with producer Jeff B entitled 'Ambience: The Adored' in 1990. The combination of a guerilla campaign at pirate radio and the support of legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold in Ibiza helped the record break the national chart in the UK with sales exceeding 40,000 copies. Two more successful singles followed in the form of 'Coda Coma' as Raw Bass for Jumpin and Pumpin (1990) and 'Divine Rhythm' for Stealth (1991).

Around the same time her urge to DJ began to take shape. A good friend, and Rave FM resident, Cool Hand Flex gave Charissa her first lessons and an 'in' at the station. Not long after, having been helped through the door by an introduction from DJ Hype, she graduated from her own show at Rave to a regular slot at Fantasy - widely regarded as London's leading house and techno pirate station at the time. "Through that daily afternoon show for Fantasy I really fell for DJ'ing hook, line and sinker," she explains. The gigs became increasingly high profile (including the opportunity to stand in for Fabio at the Astoria) and production took a back seat for a while as she built a reputation as the queen of the turntables.

Charissa got back into the producers chair in early 1993 after hooking up with Aston Harvey, now half of the infamous Freestylers. The collaboration (known as Engineers Without Fears) spawned the singles 'Spiritual Aura' for the influential Deejay Recordings and 'Vertigo' and 'Jeopardy' for Suburban Base. All notched up impressive sales, leading the charge in the burgeoning Artcore movement which saw rich synth orchestration fused with a rattling club backend. "The success of those early releases were the catalyst behind my decision to produce, engineer and release my own material," Charissa remembers.

Following the release of 'Spiritual Aura,' Charissa approached Vinyl Distribution for a loan to establish her own label. Proper Talent launched in 1994 with its debut, the 25,000 selling 'Digable Bass,' followed by over twenty singles in the next five years. "It was born out of love and wanting to express myself musically. I wanted to have the power to put great tunes out there and to work with a lot of different artists like Buju Banton, Top Cat, Outlaw Candy and MC Hooligan."

As Proper Talent's reputation gathered pace, an outing for the respected 'Journeys By DJ' series and the release of her 'Intelligence' album secured her status as one to watch. 'Intelligence' was one of the first long players to be released by a drum & bass artist and saw Rap set the jungle roughage, which characterized much of the music of the time, adrift amongst the down tempo breakbeat that had initially drawn her into the dance movement.

The breadth of this project paved the way for a major deal and, after some speculation, Charissa eventually signed with Sony's Higher Ground imprint in 1997, also home to Leftfield and Grooverider. "When that deal came along I felt empowered to do something that would fulfill all my creative impulses. I'd fallen in love with making songs in the previous couple of years and working on that album was pure joy. No cliquey scene - just me in a studio making what I wanted."

'Learning Curve', her self-penned and produced debut for Sony, was released to widespread critical acclaim in 1998, fusing pop sensibilities with an underground production ethic. Maintaining the exhaustive touring, publicity and DJ schedules to promote 'Learning Curve' took over most of Rap's creative energies at the time, and Proper Talent took a back seat while she focused on developing as a songwriter and mainstream artist. Charissa explains, "There were times where I felt really disenchanted by drum & bass. Before it had been all about the music and the label had seen solid sales, there was a period where the scene seemed more orientated towards technology and I wasn't feeling any heart or soul in the new records I was hearing"

Continuing she says, "There are a few other people who felt the same way who gave up or went on to do different things, but there were others who felt passionate enough to make a change. Producers like Jamie Majik and Roni have re-injected the vibrancy and soul that first touched me, and have moved away from that constant 'bang-bang' sound. It was seeing those people come back with something different which really inspired me to pick it back up and make the music which I felt was missing from the scene."

"Proper Talent is hugely important to me and rather than bitching about the music I don't like I'm just going to do my bit to make things better again. My relationship with drum & bass has always been like the one you have with your childhood friends; there are occasional crap periods but something will always happen to bring you back together and make the friendship even stronger. I'd started going out to clubs again over the last couple of years and it reinforced my belief that drum & bass was still at the very cutting edge and remains one of the most exciting styles of music out there"

This renewed enthusiasm led to the release of the 'Brave New World' album (with Kenny Ken) in 1999. To follow up Rap will officially re-launch Proper Talent in 2001 with the release of 'Propa Classics' (Proper Talent / Intuit Solar) and a world tour to promote the launch. The album will come out simultaneously as twelves of 'Digable Bass,' 'Spiritual Aura,' 'Divine Rhythm' and Rap's mix of 'I'm So In Love With You'.

"After the release of the Classics the intention is to open up the label again with a series of vinyl singles, each with a breakbeat track on one side and a drum & bass track on the other. I'm trying to retain the flavor of my more musical and vocal stuff and also capturing that original soul while keeping it contemporary." At the same time Rap is deep into the process of writing and producing a new album for Sony due for release in 2002.

"I can remember when my biggest dream was to be on a Raindance flyer," she closes. "Once I'd achieved that I found myself constantly on the look out for other things to stimulate and motivate me. From as far back as I can remember, my goal has been to sing songs to huge audiences but if someone would have asked me ten years ago that DJ-ing with drum & bass would open those doors for me - I wouldn't have believed it. Although I really enjoy touring and singing with the band, the best part of what I do is when I get up there and play great records - I'm a DJ at heart - I just want to get the crowd moving."

FREAKY FLOW w/ MC FLIPSIDE

Topaz Records, djfreakyflow.com / Toronto, Canada

Freaky Flow, originally from Philadelphia, PA, moved with his family to Toronto before reaching four years of age. He first took a serious interest in music at the age of eleven, mesmerized by soul jazz, garage house, and hiphop. Four years later, he purchased his first set of turntables and started spinning hiphop with his skilled partner, D-Wreck. Through this genre, Freaky learned the basics - scratching, cutting, and mixing - in just that prioritized order.

Jungle, drumandbass, and the underground music culture soon captured his attention; Flow, in turn, transferred his knowledge of hiphop into this new, captivating music. He found that scratching and cutting had unique properties in accompaniment with jungle. Party-going patrons worldwide quickly caught on to this sound. Consequently, Freaky Flow (always with MC Flipside on the microphone) plays on a regular basis at major events throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, and most recently England.

The transition from DJ to producer was only logical; Freaky wanted to be throwing down his own dubplates. With his partner in crime, MC Flipside, Freaky Flow oversaw the operation of Placebo Recordings (distributed by Stickman Records) between 1996 and 1999. The label led Flow to work with many acclaimed artists, including The Soul Grabber (Aquarius/Stickman), The Rascalz (ViK/BMG), and others. With his extremely busy schedule, however, Flow soon found it impossible to go to school full time, manage the Special Projects department at Stickman Records, DJ across the world, and direct and produce for a record label. Thus, to the dismay of many, Placebo Recordings' release schedule and Freaky Flow's studio production both came to an abrupt halt at the end of '99.

Only now, after recently completing a film degree at the University of Toronto and retiring from his position at Stickman, has Freaky Flow been able to return to the studio. And his ideas are already starting to explode back onto vinyl. Within the last two years, he has already done remix work for 311 (Volcano/Zomba/BMG), Choclair (Virgin/EMI), Pressure Rise (Aspect), Type One (GFS/Sound Gizmo), and others. New original tracks have been completed, as well, and still others are in the works.

Flow is no stranger to the mix CD, either. The "Obscene Underground - Volume 1" compilation (on Stickman Records) has thus far sold nearly 20,000 units in Canada alone. Freaky Flow's second CD, aptly entitled "World Domination" (on Moonshine Music), was released in May 2001, and surpassed his first disc in sales, hurdling over the 20,000 unit mark. A third CD - the first ever live CD that Flow has recorded - entitled "Keep It Live" (released 2002), features MC Flipside on the microphone. Watch for his newest mix CD, "The Envy", which was released on Topaz Records, New York in August 2003. Fans can also get their fix by visiting the newly refurbished www.djfreakyflow.com, which features charts, games, and everything you ever wanted to know about The Flow.

Yet even with all of these endeavours keeping him so busy, Flow has not lost sight of why he began to DJ in the first place. He simply possesses new tools to bring his art to more people. Indeed, the music is still his top priority. For Freaky Flow is still known as one of the most versatile and technically skilled producer/DJ's in North America, and still labeled 'Toronto's Jungle Scratchmaster' by promoters, producers, and partygoers alike. Swarms of partiers may consistently be found huddled around the DJ booth when Flow is on the decks, watching his every move.

MC Flipside began reciting rhymes prior to birth, while still in his mother's womb. Thus, hiphop caught his attention at an early age. Flipside struggled not to interrupt the rap songs, but found that no matter how hard he attempted to restrain himself, he could not; he was a microphone fiend - plain and simple.

During high school, Flipside became enveloped by all facets of electronic music, ranging from techno to house to breakbeat to jungle. The latter he found he could speak over best, as it was the closest in speed and pace to the hiphop that he had originally fallen in love with. Flipside first met his counterpart, Freaky Flow, in '94; each respected the other's work and a bond was formed that, in '96, would result in a merger with The Stickmen and the imminent birth of Placebo Recordings. But, to the dismay of many, Placebo Recordings' release schedule came to an abrupt halt at the end of '99. For Freaky Flow was busy with other endeavours, while Flipside was busy pursuing a highly prosperous career in radio, a trade for which he had earned a college diploma just a few years earlier.

Currently, Flip works professionally as a radio announcer. His various radio shows over the years have featured internationally acclaimed guests like Josh Wink, Nigel Richards, King Britt, M.C. G.Q., Swan-E, Johnny L., Keoki, and Roger Sanchez, just to name a few. Television is no stranger to Flip either, for he has appeared repeatedly on Canada's live dance music show, "Electric Circus," on City TV. Additionally, his three mix CD's (on Stickman/Popular), based on his radio shows, have enjoyed smashing success throughout his home country.

As a performer, Flipside travels with Freaky Flow on a regular basis, dominating the microphone wherever he goes. This praised MC/DJ lethal combination frequents major events throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, and most recently England.

Flippy, referred to as such by his friends, has already recorded vocals for numerous house cuts. Additionally, listeners can hear him making cameo appearances on most of Freaky Flow's mixed material, including the acclaimed "Obscene Underground - Volume 1" compilation, which has sold nearly 20,000 units in Canada alone, "World Domination" and "Keep It Live" on Moonshine Music, and most recently, "The Envy" on Topaz Records. Currently busy in the studio, Flipside, in collaboration with acclaimed producer Paranoid Jack and newcomer Vench, has already released some vicious vinyl on the Stickman, Aquarius, and Jinxx imprints.

This aside, Flip's main focus is still rockin' the microphone. Such is why Flipside and Freaky Flow have quickly become (arguably) the most sought after North American drumandbass contingent in the world. With such impeccable beats and rhymes that the two project, it's no wonder why!

STEVE SMOOTH

Born and raised on Chicago's Southside, Steve Smooth first entered the dance music scene in 1991. Starting out at a record store and then a Chicago based independent record label, he became immersed in the house music culture. As a dj, Steve worked to perfect his style of mixing, hitting the Chicago club circuit. This, along with Guest appearances on several college radio stations helped to gain him recognition, eventually leading to a frequent guest spot on the Sunday mix show, "The Street Flava," which aired on Chicago's largest radio station B96 (96.3 FM).

Steve has since ventured into the studio, producing and remixing tracks for some of the hottest dance labels, including, International House Records and Moody Recordings. With his first mixes on "Everyday My Life" by legendary house diva, Dajae, and the remix of the vocal anthem, "Time" by Dajae, Steve quickly made his mark in the house and dance music community. As well, his work has received much deserved attention from Billboard Magazine.

His first original production "Beat Freaker" created a frenzy on dance-floors, worldwide. As a production force to be reckoned with, Steve's skills in the studio have earned him a part on Bad Boy Bill's production team, giving him credit on Bad Boy Bill's dance-floor hits, "Everybody," "Costa Del Sol" and "Happy." Now, his latest singles, "Release" and "Get Naked" have been getting play by the worlds top dj's, as well as play on the most respected mix show, Radio 1.

But that's not all; in addition to producing, Steve is maintaining an impressive DJ schedule taking his skills as a DJ and sound to over 100 shows this past year alone all across the world including UK, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, Canada, and North and South Americas.
