The obstacle preventing a Felix Trinidad-Oscar De La Hoya rematch was a mighty one -- Trinidad's retirement.

Not anymore, apparently.

Trinidad has decided to end his retirement and begin a boxing comeback at age 30, and he's given Don King the green light to open negotiations with De La Hoya, the New York Daily News reported in Wednesday editions.

"[Trinidad's camp] sent me a letter giving me the rights to start negotiations with Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley," a giddy King told the newspaper. "Trinidad would be ready [to fight] in September, October or November. He doesn't want a tuneup. He wants Oscar first."

Trinidad had initially told King in December that he wanted to come out of retirement. There have been indications that the rocky relationship between Trinidad's camp and King might have been a factor in Trinidad retiring in the first place.

Trinidad, who won titles as a welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight, suffered his only loss when Hopkins beat him for the undisputed middleweight crown in September 2001.

He fought only once after that, stopping Hacine Cherifi in the fourth round, then announced his retirement in July 2002.

Richard Schaefer, De La Hoya's business manager, told the Daily News that he has not received the letter from King yet, and will not proceed on the matter until he hears from Trinidad personally that he is resuming his career.

Trinidad's comeback will be of great interest to De La Hoya, who lost a controversial decision to Trinidad in 1999 and has said a rematch is one fight he must have before he retires.
