Bear Owsley is a legend... If you wanna read a good book that goes through alot of the 60's "chemistry scene" check out The Brotherhood of Eternal Love by David May... it mentions owsley and another chemist named Dick Kemp... theres also a good interview he did back in 98 where he talks about alot of the chemistry http://www.island.org/news/Owsleyinterview3.pdf

Come on Owsley is incredibly charismatic and all, but shulgrin literally created hundreds and hundreds of new psychedelics that never existed before he created them. The man is a god :)

Owsley, while a great chemist, pretty much didnt do more than produce a shit load of LSD which someone else discovered and synthesised already.

Owsley was the first to synthesise d-lsd-25 without using ergot. Untill then all LSD chemists used Ergot as a precurser. Owsley eliminated the need for Ergot, which is next to impossible to get unless you're a pharmaceutical company chemist.

The first chemist to make LSD outside of a phamaceutical lab was actually Bernard Roseman.. he did it in 1962 ..but his stuff was not as pure...Owsley didn't set up his first lab untill 65 but he developed the purification methods that perfected the process that Roseman had developed... He's credited with producing the purest LSD to ever hit the streets

Contrary to popular opinion... Shulgin di not discover MDMA... the first MDMA synthesis was done by German scientists working for Merck in 1912 ... it was patented in 1914 but they didn't know what to do with it..

Shulgin did sythesise it in the 70's and was the first human to actually ingest MDMA tho. He was also the first to publish a journal on MDMA effects in humans...

He did not create any psychedellics per say... he just synthesised alot of different variations of phenethylamine which is basicly a psychoactive stimulant..

hey bumpdaddy - you've got to give some credit to Shulgin.... his work is the most important for anybody that studies psychopharmacology or any related disciplines.

his work on various combination of tryptamines and phenethylamines shows structural variations among the molecules that are psychoactive.

This is like genetics of psychiatry.

PS; IIRC, mdma was used briefly as an appetite suppressant before even Shulgin played with it.

Of ocurse he deserves alot of credit... his work was more "clinical"research than recreational chemistry. The guy has alot of balls to even take the stuff himself without knowing what would happen to him .. He's work is more geared towards researching antidepressants whereas Owsley focused more on the "mind altering" effects. Owsley is also more of a political activist. They are both great chemists and researchers as are many other that nobody has ever heard of. Ever hear of Calvin Stevens?

come on guys, I know sulgrin didnt invent MDMA, but how about the hundreds of other psychedelics that he did invent

And as any chemist will tell you, coming up with an alternate synthesis is orders of mangetude easier than visualizing a drug that does not exist by mentally viewing the molecule and what action it may have on the brain.

btw take a look at 2-CB, 2-CI, 2-CT7, 2-CT2, DOM, Foxy/5-meo-dipt etc....

whatever... theyre all geniuses.... The guy who figured out how to extract cocaine from coca leaves was a genius... the guy who discovered viagra is a genius... so is the guy who invented pop tarts ..... there are thousands of geniuses out there....

My point is this... everyone has thier impression of what a genius is...

true true, they are both right up there in my book, hell I'd almost rank them above the guy who invented thong panties!
