Wide-open Audi: New-look A6 debuts at Geneva motor show

By AUTOWEEK

EARLIER THIS MONTH WE showed the next-generation Audi A6 going through its paces in the Arctic Circle (AW, Feb. 2); now Audi is releasing a full dossier on its latest midsize sedan. It premieres in Geneva in early March and arrives in U.S. showrooms in late October or early November.

Carrying on the Nuvolari-inspired face of Audi that first appeared on a production car on the A8 W12, the expansive grilelwork is just a hint of what lies beneath the A6’s sheetmetal. U.S. buyers will have a choice of three new gasoline engines: a 335-hp, 310-lb-ft 4.2-liter V8; a 255-hp, 243-lb-ft 3.2-liter direct-fuel injection V6; or a 177-hp, 170-lb-ft 2.4-liter V6.

The V8 debuted in the S4 in late 2002 and also powers the new A8 L, while the 3.2-liter V6 is a variation of the same engine under the hood of the TT. Gearbox choices include six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and a continuously variable automatic that mimics a seven-speed transmission in manual mode.

Aside from the new face and the powertrain improvements, A6 offers high-tech options like dynamic adaptive headlights, which follow the course of the road depending on steering angle and road speed; adjustable air suspension similar to the system offered on the A8; and adaptive cruise control.
