Firstly thanks to all that made it down to Junktion in February. We really appreciate all those that helped out considering the change of venue problems that we encountered!

Great sets by Marc Hasler, John Ioannou, Paul Louth and Martin McNeill.

Junktion celebrates it’s second birthday on the 12th of March at Infinity with Kenny Hawkes, Will Saul and resident Martin McNeill.

Kenny Hawkes

DJ/Producer Kenny Hawkes has been a pioneering influence on the British

dance scene for over a decade. As a kid growing up in Brighton, Kenny soaked

up the sounds of Motown, Ska, Hip Hop, Dub Reggae. As soon as he hit 18 he

disappeared off to Southern Europe, where he spent endless evenings

developing his DJ skills by playing at some of Europe's most notorious after

hours clubs.

He returned home in the early 90s, skint and unknown. One morning whilst

lounging about and listening to the radio, he stumbled across a Pirate Radio

Station called "Girls FM" that played Downbeat, Dub, Soul, Techno and

Garage. At that time the station only had one DJ, but they were looking for

more. It wasn't long before Kenny joined up and moved to London with the

station - which he ended up managing - and in no time "Girls FM" was

attracting up to a million listeners a month.

Due to Kenny's natural grasp of quality dance music, "Girls FM" became the

most legendary underground dance music station that London had ever heard.

It soon boasted 22 DJs, one of whom was "Luke Solomon" (of current 'Freaks'

fame) who soon became Kenny's greatest friend and fellow resident at

London's longest running mid-week house club, "Space" at Bar Rumba.

Space closed its doors for the final time in February 2002, after seven

brilliant years as London's tour de force within the global house community.

Kenny and Luke prided themselves on bringing into the fold the world's

greatest spinners - such as Harvey, Stacey Pullen, Tom Middleton, DJ

Heather, Francois Kevorkian, DJ Sneak, Pete Heller, Mark Farina, Cajmere and

Derrick Carter - where they would play for a pint, a packet of crisps and

their cab fare home. The sets would offer a diverse and rich musical

palette. One week there'd be Kenny Carpenter playing a classic New York

style Garage and Disco set, the next Andy Weatherall would be dropping Dub

Reggae right through to Hypnotic Tech-Funk. Space is sorely missed but keep

your eyes peeled for one off parties Kenny throws in association with Luke &

Justin Harris's imprint, Music For Freaks.

Will Saul

Will Saul is A&R for Simple Records, a label that embraces breakbeat, deep

house, electro, techno and broken beat. With its 7th release, Simple is one

year old (feb 04). Will's wide ranging influences and eclectic DJing

techniques have enabled him to develop a unique style fusing broken beats of

all tempos. His debut single 'Fast Lane' and follow up 'Cliff' won acclaim

from breakbeat, electronica and house artists. Remixed by Fink and Infusion,

they were praised for their strong groove and subtle production. Will's

third 12" on Simple will be 'Malfunction' remixed by Meat Katie and out in

April. He has signed his single 'Swoop', featuring vocals from the legendary

Ursula Rucker, to Ali B's label Air (due out in May/June). Will recently

remixed Evil 9 for Marine Parade alongside label mates Precision Cuts and

has produced a track exclusively for Meat Katie's Bedrock Breaks

compilation.

Will has built up an underground following for the series of Early & Late DJ

mixes circulated from '99 to '01 and has recorded guest mixes for Radio 1

and Capital. He's DJed across the UK and Europe, recently playing Simple

Records nights at Fabric and Flex, Vienna with visits to Urban Gorilla,

Tangled and Wildstyle in Nurenberg scheduled for February and a trip to

Japan & Australia organized for April. He will be resident alongside Rennie

Pilgrem & Meat Katie at TCR & W9Y's HUM club for 2004 and regular guest at

Air @ Rhythm Factory.

April sees Will return with spacey, experimental grooves on 'Malfunction',

that includes a remix from Meat Katie. Precision Cuts will release their

second single on Simple in March. Will's debut album is scheduled for

release in November and will take in a variety of tempo's and styles, from

downtempo/dub to glitchy house, electro and deep breaks. Sideshow will be

releasing 3 limited edition EP's (the first will surface in May) over the

course of 2004 - Laurent Garnier will be one of the 3 remixers for this project.
