erica45psi Posted March 16 Author Report Share Posted March 16 DJ PHEARThough he has never had any formal training, nor played any type of instrument (except an accordion for a very short and comedic stint), the sounds we call music have always played an integral part of Phear's life and being. Listening to his parent's 45s and albums of the Stones, then graduating into the world of the 80's and the New Wave era, eventually spending most every dime he had on used CDs while The Cranberries were touring; he has always been an addict. Once it became clear just how unconsciously music affected people, the universe worked its magic and introduced Phear to the lifestyle of the DJ while living in San Diego county. Frequenting the Dragon Lounge and watching his good friend Jeff Black play records, it was then back to Los Angeles. A whole new world awaited.In the beginning, Phear's influences on the decks were actually a bunch of underground hip hop heads; he knew not one person in the area who was into drum and bass. Naturally, Phear was infected by the style of the DJ and went with the flow of buying and playing hip hop in backyard parties as The Nebula Kru, yet still craved the upshift tempos. As fate would have it, he finally met up with like-minded people and got a weekly gig at a late-night coffee joint. It was perfect and seemed to snowball from there. Phear then partnered in a weekly club (The Resonance Lab) and found himself digging deeper and deeper, creating and soiling roots in the culture. Vibeflow was the next step in the evolution. Phear was given his own broadcasting hours and created what was to become one of the west coast's most successful shows - Medium Radio. One offs followed, mini-tours began and he now sits as a resident of his own monthy - Muse (http://clubmuse.com); host of a new broadcast, Therapeutics (http://therapeutics.la) and is storming the west coast as often as possible. The choices he have made along the way have not always been easy, but when someone gets that feeling of purpose, you just have to go with it. And that, is just what Phear has done.Phear has come to realize his role in the culture extends beyond his involvement and what he physically does for the scene, however. The phrase used to describe himself sums it up - "drum n bass is the root from which my abstract grows." His mark has been made by a unique display of style on the decks, being recognized by his peers as having a unique touch for the art of mixing.
