Warm Up 2004

Saturdays, July 3 – September 4, 2004

(Long Island City, NY, June 2004) – P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to announce Warm Up 2004, the critically acclaimed music festival that has become one of New York’s most anticipated summer events. Now in its seventh year, Warm Up brings together music and visual arts with performances by local and international DJs and live bands, drawing thousands of people each week, including artists, families, and club-goers to dance, relax, and cool off in an innovative architectural installation in P.S.1’s outdoor galleries. Opening July 3, Warm Up 2004 will be held for 10 weeks, each Saturday afternoon through September 4, from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. Admission is $8.00.

Crowds have flocked to P.S.1 to hear an eclectic mix of sounds from experimental and established DJs and musicians, ranging from techno samples and house beats to hip hop poetry and Latin-inspired electronic rock. This year's music series is organized by P.S.1 Summer Music Series Coordinator Jason Drummond and Director of Music, Lokke Highstein and kicks off with Trevor Jackson, Madlib, and Peanut Butter Wolf. Over the past six years, Warm Up has hosted live performances and DJ sets by artists such as: Afrika Bambaataa, Mad Professor, Richie Hawtin, Danny Krivit, Nicky Siano, Neil Aline, DJ Craze, Charlie Dark, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Frederic Galliano, Kid Koala, Arto Lindsay, Ming & FS, Nortec Collective, Stacey Pullen, Ursula Rucker, DJ Swamp, Swayzak, Luke Vibert, Doc Martin, X-Press 2, Danny Wang, Harvey, and many more.

This year marks the fifth annual MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program, a competition that gives emerging architects the opportunity to realize an outdoor environment designed to host the Warm Up series. This year’s project, Canopy, by nARCHITECTS, is constructed primarily of freshly cut green bamboo, and features spaces for lounging and relaxation including a wading pool and a sandy area for sunbathers. Since 1998, artists and architects including Gelatin, Philip Johnson, SHoP, ROY, William Massie, and EMERGENT/Tom Wiscombe have transformed P.S.1’s courtyard into an urban beach with works of interactive architecture and sculpture that have inspired both critics and audiences alike. Canopy opens June 27.

Warm Up 2004 is made possible with the generous support of agnès b., James Family Foundation, Mondavi Winery and Brooklyn Brewery.

Following is the current lineup for Warm Up 2004. This schedule subject to change. Please check www.ps1.org for more information and www.wps1.org, P.S.1’s new online radio station, for online streaming of Warm Up programming.

Chicken Lips will be a fun fucking party

DJ Buck would be nasty

I've seen the "Kooky Scientist" at the Landing and he threw down (was that the night of Tom's 21st??)

Derrick May and Francois K will be unreal.

Just because you don't know who they are.... doesn't mean they aren't good. I'm going to be in NY on the TBA weekend... I'm keeping my fingers crossed (heard a rumor it was going to be DnB & breaks though. blah)

agreed Derrick May will be solid. im sure most will be great or they wouldnt of been signed aboard - just not who i was hoping for - but whatever... its still a killer party, outside in the sunshine with cheap beers... i dont really care too much who's spinning frankly
