What happened to all the NYC club promoters??????? Where are u?

Recommended Posts

Remember when SF & Exit each had (or what seemed) like 300 promoters that made a ton of money, and the guestlists were so HUGE they used to have multiple tables each with 1 inch binders with a million lists full of names?

They did a really good job of promoting, however suddenly they disappeared. Say what u want about sf, roxy, & exit but at least they were packed and fun (IMO) now places are empty and if the venue isn't significantly smaller (avalon or spirit) or some lame plastic surgery lounge it won't make $$. Before, u could go out and chill.. wear whatever u want and just have fun, it was about the dj and vibe. Now it's all fake gucci, fake louis vuitton, fake dior, a/x ..... it's all about attire now, it sux. do ppl go for clothes or music / vibe anyway?

Where are those promoters?

It's interesting you should post this at this time because starting this friday july 30th at IKON(formally black & exit) a new party will begin with about 400

There hasn't been a party like this in awhile...this tuesday, at ikon there is a promoters meeting starting at 8pm.."Its a big gathering of all the promoters on board right before the opening this friday...this party is 18 to enter & 21 to drink...KTU's riddler along with ktu's vic latino kick off the night..afterhours on the main floor is by chris asta & sergio.....if anyone wants to get on board the come this tuesday at 8pm..Ikon also will open the new skylounge roof top party plus all rooms are open...your right about what you said..those days were a lot of fun and hopefully this new friday night party will continue where once upon a time a party with this amount of promoters left off

The truth to the fact that many house music clubs are lacking promoters is because the whole buisness has changed where smaller venues are easier to maintain, without having to have so many promoters to pay out, tactics such as internet and computer promotion has cut budget costs in half, remember back then not everyone had internet service or even a computer. The game has definitely changed today.

There are 2 types of club promoters subpromoters and lease promoters, the little known fact is that subpromoters don't always make money therefore they give up after all hard work is done, to me unless I have a g.l. over 100 people I wouldn't want to subpromote, $5 a head is just not worth all that trouble of constanly calling people to go to there spots.

Lease promoters have control of everything and have a contractorial lease with the club on there night, these promoters have to dish out bar guarantees payout dj's, radio promotion (alone can cost $5,000 for 1 spot throughout a week) flyer guys, printer costs and team pay. It's not always a good bottom line many have failed doing this. Just guess all these costs and you'll understand why the bottom line aint always worth it.

It's a very hard buisness especially for house music clubs, not many people in New York like house anymore, it's changing towards the whole Hip Hop scene. I've seen many clubs change totally to Hip Hop due to the lack of attendance on there house nights. And a lot of this has to due with cost to hire a good well known DJ, they just charge too much money (average asking price for Paul Oakenfold is $10,000) to play and they're just not worth it. Bigger clubs are the only clubs that can afford some of these costs, but at the same time they take bigger hits.
